GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDER-STANDING OF SCRIPTURE August 25, 2019 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever seen a celebrity? Have you ever met a political representative? Did the encounter leave you with newfound act-ing or musical abilities? Did it give you a grasp of the intricacies of the latest city ordinance or controversial law? Talents, exper-tise, and skill are hard-won traits, not rewards that spread by contact. Our life of faith is also not so easy. "We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets!" In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus notes that it requires moral strength to enter the kingdom of God. It's not mere prox-imity to righteousness that saves. Rubbing elbows with the right-eous is not the same as being truly holy ourselves. Unfortunate-ly, we can have this attitude in many areas. It's easy to see who may seem "first" in the eyes of the world. This occurs in our workplaces and among our public figures. It can also happen in our schools, local parishes, and the larger Church. For some of us, the temptation to have the popularity and prestige rub off on us can be fairly strong. If only we are in the right place with the right people, surely others will associate us with what they pos-sess! But salvation is worked out in each individual life. It is our task not merely to show up, but to be transformed. And the truly transformed may not be everyone we expect. "People will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south... some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." Some who seem first in reputation now may be last in the kingdom of God. Others who appear now on the furthest fringes of society - but better imitate the lowly holiness of Jesus - will be first in his kingdom. What are your concerns? Proximity and reputation? Or prayerful righteousness? ©LPi

MEDITACION DEL EVANGELIO- ALENTAR UN EN-TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LAS ESCRITURAS 25 de agosto de 2019 21er Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Recuerdo, cuando niña, mis padres me decían la siguiente frase: "Esfuérzate por siempre hacer las cosas bien." Así sea lo más simple, debe ser bien hecho, aunque te tardes poquito más. Esforzarse significa que lo que se hace debe tener como motivo principal hacer el bien a ti mismo y a los demás. La sociedad en que vivimos nos mueve a hacer todo con prisa y esto motiva a que en ocasiones no haya esfuerzo. Si preguntáramos a los at-letas profesionales que es lo que los llevo al éxito en las diferentes carreras que eligen, nos dirían en su respuesta que el esfuerzo es lo que los ha llevado al éxito. Seguir a Jesús en su camino a Jerusalén no es fácil; la puerta es angosta, estrecha y para entrar en ella hay que esforzarse. Es decir, para estar dentro del Reino de Dios se debe de trabajar duro. El Papa Francisco nos dice que: El camino de la salvación, según explica el Señor, prevé el traspaso de una puerta. ¿Cuál? Jesús mismo es la puerta. Lo dice Él en el Evangelio de Juan: "Yo soy la puerta" (Jn 10, 9). Él nos conduce a la comunión con el Padre, donde encontramos amor, comprensión y protección. Pero ¿Por qué esta puerta es es-trecha?, se puede preguntar. ¿Por qué dice que es estrecha? Es una puerta estrecha no porque sea opresiva; sino porque nos ex-ige restringir y contener nuestro orgullo y nuestro miedo, para abrirnos con el corazón humilde y confiado a Él, reconociéndonos pecadores, necesitados de su perdón. Por esto es estrecha: para contener nuestro orgullo, que nos hincha. La puerta de la misericordia de Dios es estrecha, pero ¡siempre ab-ierta de par en par para todos!" Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of social media can be powerful tools of communication. They allow people to stay in touch. They provide an avenue for fresh ideas. People can be engaged in conver-sations and be exposed to issues of the day in ways few could have dreamed of just a few decades ago. But social media can also give the false sense of really knowing someone, when only the surface has been scratched about who a person is in reality.

You don't really know someone just because you know a lot about him or her and are linked to a profile online. Unfortunately, people develop emotional attachments to the idea of a person all the time. If they do find themselves fortunate enough to meet the person face-to-face one day, they can often find out they never really knew the per-son in the first place. There are people who believe they know Jesus so very well. They can readily share their view of what Jesus would do or wouldn't do in a given situation. They own items like crosses and Bibles that seem to provide evidence of this person they know so well. Some-times, they even strongly admonish others because their view of Jesus is certainly not in line with their own. But in Luke 13, Jesus speaks about those who claim to know him, but they really do not belong to him at all. They make claims based upon what they have seen and heard, but they have never allowed Jesus to truly change them. They are like Facebook followers; seem-ingly close, but with no real relationship at all. Do you know Jesus? Don't just be a fan. Invite Jesus into your life and let the real relationship begin. Las redes sociales como Facebook y Twitter pueden ser instrumen-tos poderosos para la comunicación. Permiten el contacto entre mucha gente. Proveen una plataforma para compartir nuevas ideas. Hace algunas décadas poca gente habría podido imaginarse la fa-cilidad con que las personas de hoy pueden conversar y recibir no-ticias de todas partes del mundo. Sin embargo, las redes sociales también pueden emitir un sentido falso de verdaderamente conocer a alguien, porque una persona solamente puede tocar la superficie de quién es otra persona en realidad. No conoces a alguien simplemente porque sepas muchos hechos acerca de ellos o porque estén conectados por un perfil público. De-safortunadamente, muchas veces mucha gente se encariña con la idea de una persona. Si un día conoce a esta persona cara a cara, frecuentemente descubre que de verdad no conocía a esta persona en primer lugar. Hay personas que creen que conocen a Jesús muy bien. Inmedi-atamente pueden compartir sus opiniones de lo que haría o no haría Jesús en alguna situación. Poseen cosas como cruces y biblias que producen evidencia de la persona a quien conocen bien. A veces, amonestan a otros por no tener en común la misma opinión de Jesús. Pero en el capítulo 13 de Lucas, Jesús habla de los que le aseguran conocerle, pero en realidad ellos no le conocen. Hacen declaraciones basadas en lo que han visto y oído, pero todavía no han permitido que Jesús los transforme verdaderamente. Ellos son como como los seguidores de Facebook: supuestamente se conocen bien, pero no tienen una relación auténtica. ¿Conoces tú a Jesús? No simplemente seas fanático.
