Celebrating Our 100th Anniversary

Our Mission The mission of our Parish is to reach out to all people and encourage them to join us in joyfully giving praise and glory to God; to build a Christian community that, with trust in God, embraces the future, and in doing so, is a beacon of faith, hope and love on the Jersey City waterfront.

Our History Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, or OLC, was founded in 1911 to serve Polish immigrants to Jersey City. Today, OLC is growing and changing as it seeks to serve all those who now live in our neighborhood. The Church takes its name from a city in Poland that houses a cherished icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A copy of that icon is centrally located in our historic Church.

Dear Parishioners, The liturgy of the Mass is filled with signs and symbols. Frequently, we take these signs

and symbols for granted. For example, the simple action of making the Sign of the Cross is filled with tremendous significance. At baptism we were “... claimed for Christ by the sign of his cross”. It is in the Cross of Christ that “... we die with Christ so as to live with Him.” We identify ourselves with Christ through his cross; and, there is much more that we can say

about this simple action particularly as we bless ourselves with holy water when we enter the church. Besides the many signs we experience during the celebration of the Mass, we can also talk about what we do

during Mass. Have you ever asked yourself why we stand, sit or kneel at different times during the Mass? Why do we all do the same thing together at the same time? Why can’t some sit while others stand? The answers to these questions lie in what we believe and how we display our respect during the various segments of the Mass.

As the priest enters, we stand in respect of the office he represents as “another Christ”. We greet him as if we were greeting Christ himself. We stand during the Gospel in respect for the Word of God, the Good News that Jesus has given us. The Gospel proclaimed during Mass is actually Jesus himself speaking to us, and so, we stand in respect. At the conclusion of the Mass, we stand for the final prayer, the blessing and as the priest departs, again, as a sign of respect. We need to know that standing during Mass is an important sign of respect. Traditionally, many of us have grown up believing kneeling was the best or only sign of respect during Mass. However, this is not the case.

When I came to OLC, the practice of standing during the Eucharistic Prayer had been in place for some time. I have never changed that. In the meantime, as we have had many more join the parish, we have seen more people kneeling during the Eucharistic Prayer, as was their practice in other parishes. Therefore, I encourage everyone to stand during the Eucharistic Prayer so that we are all doing the same thing, at the same time, during the Mass. This might seem like a small issue but it is significant.

All of us standing or sitting together at the same time signifies our unity and oneness. This unity of action represents the fact that we are one body, the one Body of Christ. It also represents the fact that we are together a “pilgrim people” who are on a journey to the Kingdom of God together. We work together and we worship together.

With love,

Preparation for children to receive their First

Holy Communion will begin on Wednesday, March 2. Classes will be held at the OLC School beginning at 3:15 pm. This year, second graders and those third graders who did not receive First Communion last year will be prepared. Parents, please contact the rectory should your child need to

receive this sacrament Because of the size of the group for First

Communion, there will be two dates offered: May 8 and May 15. For those parents who wish to enroll their child in the program, please contact the rectory.

Please join us for coffee, light breakfast and

friendly talk at the next “This Is OLC” presentation, on Sunday, January 30th. “This Is OLC” is a casual gathering, which gives prospective, new and veteran members of the parish an opportunity to meet, learn about the parish and its history, and find out what OLC has to offer its community. It's also a good place to learn about the opportunities to participate and contribute in parish groups and activities that help strengthen our community of faith. If you're looking to join the parish, find out about baptism, learn about the choir, or just meet your fellow parishioners, this is the place for you. “This Is OLC” will start just after the 10:00 am Mass, in the church basement. We look forward to seeing you there!

The 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal (AAA) will begin on February 5th and 6th.

As the AAA begins this year, I appeal to all parishioners to make a pledge or donation. Your contribution

and participation are extremely important and are powerful and effective ways of living the Gospel message.

Envelopes and literature regarding the Appeal will be found both in the pews and also in the rear of the church. Please, take some time to prayerfully make a generous pledge that will go a long way in funding essential programs which help many in need throughout the Archdiocese.

A pledge allows you to make equal monthly contributions over the course of the year. By pledging, your contribution could be as little as a dollar a day. Bring your pledge to church or mail it to the rectory. Every contribution is important regardless of the amount. However, always remember that if you have been blessed, it is important to give back accordingly as a sign of your gratitude to God.

Thank you and may God bless you.

Thank you so very much for your financial support. Many of our parishioners believe that it is important to financially support their parish. Thank you for living your financial commitment. Your support helps us to achieve our weekly collection goal of $6,000 per Sunday.

For the weekend of January 15/16 there were 495 people who attended Mass. The total weekend collection came to $5,947 (of that amount $2,070 came from parishioners making their contributions electronically through Parish Pay). This amount is $53 below our weekly goal of $6,000 per Sunday.

To date, the Christmas collection has risen to $60,997. There is still time if you haven’t made your “Christmas Gift” to OLC.

The watchword today is “immediately”. Peter and Andrew, James and John all respond immediately to the call of Christ. May I be as open to God’s call and as ready to use my talents in His service as those first disciples were!

A TRADITION OF GIVING TO OLC

“Christmas Gift” donations continue to come in. Thanks to all who have contributed to the 2010 “Christmas Gift” program at OLC and for the latest donations that we received these past two weeks.

To date, our “Christmas Gift” donations have risen to $60,997. This is two-thirds of our goal of $90,000. We’re showing good progress since we were only half-way to our goal two weeks ago. So, if you haven’t made your “Gift”, there is still time. Please, help us make our upcoming Ramp Project a reality.

Adopt-A-Family Mission Project The spirit of Christmas was truly evident as the school’s recent Adopt-A-Family Mission Project raised $4,520.00 for families of The Resurrection School. Catholic Schools Week Preparations are underway for Catholic School’s week which will take place the week of January 31st. The theme for this year’s Catholic School’s Week is “A+ for Catholic School Education”. Food Collection Traditionally, OLC School collects non-perishable food prior to Thanksgiving to be distributed to the needy of Resurrection parish. The school is happy to announce that it will continue its food collection efforts throughout the school year. Some of the contributions from the school will be donated together with OLC Church’s monthly food collection in support of Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry. Registration for 2011-12 Academic Year Registration for the 2011-12 academic year is in progress. For returning students, a special incentive will be offered for those who register by January 28, 2011. Please contact Mrs. Joyce Cmiel at 201-434-2405 or [email protected] for further information.

FOOD PANTRY We make a special appeal asking parishioners to donate non-perishable food items on the first Sunday of each month. However, if you forget the first Sunday, you can make your donation

any Sunday. Please leave your donations at the rear of the church.
