What is Sodality?

The Sodality is a group of Catholic

individuals with similar ideas who

work together in the service of the

Church and the world. The

objective of the Sodality is to

promote a closer relationship with

Jesus through adoration and

emulation of His Mother. The

Sodality provides a channel through

which Sodalists speak as a group to bring the Church’s values

to issues in religion, education and civic affairs.

The Sodality assists each member in fulfilling a personal

vocation as a witness for Christ in one’s daily actions and the

use of one’s talents on behalf of the Church, the community

and the world. As the primary function of the Sodality, this is

accomplished through a well-developed prayer life which

fosters service in the family, Church and community. The

Sodality is organized under two principal missions: Spiritual

Life and Apostolic Life, i.e., prayer and service.

The suggested prayer life includes daily Mass, the Rosary,

Scripture reading, the Liturgy of the Hours, spiritual

formation, retreats and days of recollection, and other

personal devotions. Apostolic activities include service to the

Church and programs that care for the sick, the elderly, the

poor, the homeless, important legislation and concern for

Christian education.

A Brief History of Sodality

Midway through the sixteenth

century (1563), a young Jesuit

priest named Father John Leontius

was teaching a small class at the

Jesuit College in Rome when one

day, around a little altar of the

Blessed Virgin Mary, he gathered

what seemed to have been his

prized pupils. He sketched out a

single program that appeared to

fit instinctively into precisely the

needs of that time when the Church was being persecuted.

These young students bound themselves in faith, hope and

love to Christ Jesus. As active, militant Catholics, they were

to be recognized as followers of Christ by their military zeal,

charity and service. They found in Mary the great inspiration

to give themselves to the service of Christ. They loved her

for what she was and did for the Lord, and showed her

special veneration, placing their groups in her loving

protection. This was the beginning of the first structured

Sodality.

Later in the century (1584), Pope Gregory XIII acknowledged

the Sodality in the Roman College, and granted it a list of

special indulgences. This Sodality was made the Mother

Sodality for the world, and was given the title “Prima

Primaria.” Sodalities were quickly organized throughout

Europe and later in America. About two hundred years later

Page 4: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[3]

(1751), women and girls were finally admitted to the Society

by Pope Benedict XXIV.

The Sodality came to North

America in 1739 when Pope

Clement XII issued a Papal Bull

approving the Sodality founded

in 1730 at the Ursuline School in

New Orleans, Louisiana. George-

town University was the site of

the first Sodality in the newly

formed United States of America.

Sodalities exist today in states

from coast to coast and

internationally in 60 countries, as

of 2005.

(Excerpt from Manual of the Sodality Union of the ADW.)

The Sodality of Our Lady of Families

The Sodality of Our Lady of Families was installed as an

organization of Holy Family Catholic Church on June 18, 2017

at 9:30 AM Sunday Mass. It was instituted to provide

another avenue for parishioners to enhance or develop their

prayer life and to attain a closer relationship with Jesus

through devotion to his Mother.

As a group the Sodalists monthly attend the 9:30 AM Mass

on the 4th Sunday from September to December and from

February to May. The Rosary is prayed prior to Mass and the

General Meeting is held immediately after Mass in the

classroom at the Parish Hall. The General Meetings are open

Page 5: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[4]

to all who wish to attend. Membership is open to all

Catholics, women and men.

If you are seeking affiliation with an

organization that will enhance your

prayer life and provide opportunities

for service to the Church and

community, then come to a meeting

or activity so as to explore if the

Sodality is for you.

If you would like additional information about the Sodality of

Our Lady of Families, please leave your name and contact

information at the Rectory (301) 249-2266 and you will be

contacted by a Sodality member.

RECITATION OF THE ROSARY

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and

earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered

under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he

descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the

dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand

of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge

the living and the dead. / I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Page 6: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[5]

OUR FATHER, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy

kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. /

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Recite the Hail Mary on the following three beads for an increase in faith, hope and charity.

HAIL MARY, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art

thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,

Jesus. / Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now,

and at the hour of our death. Amen.

GLORY BE to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. /

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world

without end. Amen.

HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness

Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in

this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine

eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us

the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O

sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. O GOD, whose only

begotten Son, by His life, death,

and resurrection, has purchased

for us the rewards of eternal life,

grant, we beseech Thee, that

meditating upon these mysteries of

the Most Holy Rosary of the

Blessed Virgin Mary, we may

The Angelus

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary…

Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary…

And the Word was made Flesh. And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary…

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The Regina Caeli

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia. Has risen, as he said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia. Let us pray.

[8]

O God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA

Immaculate Mary

Immaculate Mary, your praises we sing, You reign now in heaven with Jesus, our King. Ave, Ave, Ave Maria, Ave, Ave Maria.

In heaven, the blessed your glory proclaim; On earth, we your children invoke your fair name. Ave, Ave, Ave Maria, Ave, Ave Maria.

Your name is our power, your virtues our light, Your love is our comfort, your pleading our might. Ave, Ave, Ave Maria, Ave, Ave Maria.

We pray for our Mother, the Church upon earth, And bless, dearest lady, the land of our birth. Ave, Ave, Ave Maria, Ave, Ave Maria.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in

them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall

be created.

Response: And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray. O God, who did instruct the hearts of the faithful

by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in the same Spirit to be

Page 10: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[9]

truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation, through Jesus

Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O Mary, conceived without sin. Response: Pray for us who have recourse to you. (3 times)

O Lord Jesus Christ, who have vouchsafed to glorify by

numberless miracles the Blessed Virgin Mary, immaculate from

the first moment of her conception, grant that all who devoutly

implore her protection on earth, may eternally enjoy Your

presence in heaven, who, with the Father and Holy Spirit, live

and reign, God, for ever and ever. Amen. / O Lord Jesus Christ,

who for the accomplishment of Your greatest works, have

chosen the weak things of the world, that no flesh may glory in

Your sight; and who for a better and more widely diffused belief

in the Immaculate Conception of Your Mother, have wished

that the Miraculous Medal be manifested to Saint Catherine

Laboure, grant, we beseech You, that filled with like humility,

we may glorify this mystery by word and work. Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most compassionate Virgin Mary, that never was

it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored

your assistance, or sought your intercession was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto you, O Virgin of

Virgins, our Mother; to you we come; before you we kneel

sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise

not our petitions, but in your clemency hear and answer them.

Amen.

Novena Prayer

O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord Jesus and our

Mother, penetrated with the most lively confidence in your all-

powerful and never failing intercession, manifested so often

through the Miraculous Medal, we your loving and trustful

children implore you to obtain for us the graces and favors we

ask during this Novena, if they be beneficial to our immortal

souls, and the souls for whom we pray. (Here privately form

your petitions.) You know, O Mary, how often our souls have

been the sanctuaries of your Son who hates iniquity. Obtain for

us then a deep hatred of sin and that purity of heart which will

attach us to God alone so that our every thought, word and

deed may tend to His greater glory. Obtain for us also a spirit of

prayer and self-denial that we may recover by penance what

we have lost by sin and at length attain to that blessed abode

where you are the Queen of angels and of men. Amen.

Act of Consecration to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

O Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate, we dedicate and

consecrate ourselves to you under the title of Our Lady of the

Miraculous Medal. May this Medal be for each one of us a sure

sign of your affection for us and a constant reminder of our

duties toward you. Ever while wearing it, may be blessed by

your loving protection and preserved in the grace of your Son.

O most powerful Virgin, Mother of our Savior, keep us close to

you every moment of our lives. Obtain for us, your children, the

grace of a happy death; so that, in union with you, we may

enjoy the bliss of heaven forever. Amen.

O Mary, conceived without sin. Response: Pray for us who have recourse to you. (3 times)

[12]

TRADITIONAL FIRST FRIDAY PRAYERS

Act of Reparation

Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is

requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt,

behold us prostrate before you, eager to repair by a special act

of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which your

loving Heart is everywhere subject. / Mindful alas! That we

ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we

now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask

your pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary

expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for

the sins of those, who, straying far from the path of salvation

refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow you, their Shepherd

and Leader, or renouncing the promises of their baptism, have

cast off the yoke of your law. / We are now resolved to expiate

each and every deplorable outrage committed against you; we

are now determined to make amends for the manifold offenses

against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior,

for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the

innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holy days,

and the shocking blasphemies uttered against you and your

Saints. / We wish also to make amends for the insults to which

your Vicar on earth and your priests are subjected, for the

profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of

the very Sacrament of your divine love, and lastly for the public

crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of

the Church which you have founded. / Would that we were able

to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer,

in reparation for these violations of your divine honor, the

satisfaction you once made to your Eternal Father on the cross

and which you continue to renew daily on our altars; we offer it

Page 14: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[13]

in union with the acts of atonement of your Virgin Mother and

all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we

sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with

the help of your grace, for all neglect of your great love and for

the sins we and others have committed in the past. /

Henceforth, we will live a life of unswerving faith, of purity of

conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel

and especially that of chastity. We promise to the best of our

power to prevent others from offending you and to bring as

many as possible to follow you. / O loving Jesus, through the

intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our model in

reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of

this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance

keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we

owe to you, so that we may all one day come to that happy

home, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and

reign, God forever and ever. Amen.

Act of Dedication

Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down

upon us humbly prostrate before your altar. We are yours, and

yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with you,

behold, we freely consecrate ourselves today to your Most

Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known you; many too,

despising your precepts have rejected you. Have mercy on

them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to your Sacred

Heart. / Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never

forsaken you, but also of the prodigal children who have

abandoned you; grant that they may quickly return to their

Father's house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. / Be

King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or

whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of

Page 15: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[14]

truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one

flock and one Shepherd. / Grant, O Lord, to your Church

assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and

order to all nations; and make the earth resound from pole to

pole with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our

salvation; to it be glory and honor forever. Amen.

First Friday Sacred Heart Prayers

All: Lord Jesus Christ, you have promised that where two or

more are gathered in your name, you will be in their midst.

Look down, then, with love and compassion upon us here

before you to honor your Sacred Heart and to make it known

and loved by all. Come into our midst, gentle Jesus, fill our

hearts with blessings and inflame them with your love.

Priest: O Jesus, look upon those who kneel before you. People: Heart of Jesus, hear and grant our prayers.

All: Divine Heart of Jesus, to you we have recourse. In you we

find consolation when afflicted, protection when persecuted,

strength when overwhelmed with trials, and light in doubt and

darkness. We firmly believe you can bestow on us the graces

we implore. We are most unworthy of your favors, but you are

the God of mercies and will not refuse a contrite and humble

heart. / Remembering your words: “Ask and you will receive,

seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you”;

mindful too, that from your Sacred Heart have come words of

tenderness and pleading love: “Come to Me, all you that labor

and are burdened, and I will refresh you”; we come to you now

with childlike confidence to make our pleas in this prayer.

(Please pause here to make any personal intention for this Holy

Hour). But if what we ask is not for the glory of God and the

saving of souls, answer our prayer in the way you know best.

Whatever may be your decision with regard to our requests, we

will never cease to adore, love, and serve you.

Priest: O Jesus, answer our petitions as we kneel before you. People: Heart of Jesus, hear and grant our prayers.

Priest: Let us pray.

Page 18: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[17]

All: O Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Heart of your

dearly beloved Son and upon the praise and satisfaction he

offers you in behalf of sinners, and being appeased, grant

pardon to those who seek your mercy, in the name of the same

Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTIONS

To be recited after the Rosary:

Queen of the Rosary, sweet Virgin of Fatima, who has deigned

to appear in the land of Portugal and has brought both interior

and exterior peace to that once troubled country; we beg you

to watch over our dear homeland as well and to assure its

moral and spiritual revival. / Restore peace to all the nations of

the world so that all, and our nation in particular, may be happy

to call you their Queen of Peace.

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for our country.

Our Lady of Fatima, obtain for all humanity a lasting peace.

Amen.

Act of Consecration

Mary, Virgin most powerful and Mother of mercy, Queen of

heaven and refuge of sinners, we consecrate ourselves to your

Immaculate Heart. We consecrate to you our very being and

our whole life; all that we have, all that we love, all that we are.

To you we give our bodies, our hearts, and our souls; to you we

give our homes, our families, our country. / Mindful of this

consecration, we pledge to imitate you by the practice of

Christian virtues without regard for human recognition. We

resolve to receive Holy Communion, on the first Saturday of

Page 19: Our Lady of Families Sodality - WordPress.com · Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known

[18]

every month when possible, and to offer daily five decades of

the Rosary with all our sacrifices in the spirit of penance and

reparation. Amen.

DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET

(The chaplet employs traditional rosary beads.)

Begin with the following: the Sign of the Cross, an Our Father, a

Hail Mary and the Apostles Creed.

On Our Father beads say: “Eternal Father, I offer You the Body

and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our

Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the

whole world.”

On the ten Hail Mary beads say: “For the sake of His sorrowful

Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Conclude with (three times): “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy

Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Sodality Prayer to Jesus through Mary

O Mother Mary, may you continue to bless our lives as we

journey in faith, hope, and love.

Be our model and guide as we live in the grace won by

your Son Jesus, in His suffering and resurrection.

May your motherly intercession for us bring healing,

strength and renewal.

O Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.

Help us to bring all people to your Son, especially those in

most need of His mercy.

May our Sodality help us grow in your image as disciples

of Jesus.

We pray this in His name. Amen.
