Stewardship Stewards Have Teacher

“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will

send in my name, He will teach you everything and

remind you of all that I told you.” JOHN 14:26

The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate

more on what we want than on what God wants for us

and from us. It is good to know that when we are con-

fused by our Stewardship responsibilities, we can call

on the Holy Spirit to show us the way.

THE DAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

John's Gospel tells us that when Jesus "breathed" on the disci-

ples, the Holy Spirit came into them, empowering them to for-

give sins and to gather all people into union with one another.

The book of Genesis had explained the divisions among na-

tions with the story of the Tower of Babel. In rebellious pride,

human beings had struggled to become equal to God. The re-

sult was chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same lan-

guage among themselves. Today's reading from Acts tells how

the Spirit has just the opposite effect. Strangers from many

nations hear and understand one another, each in his or her

own tongue.

This message of unity in the Spirit is repeated in the reading

from Corinthians. There are many gifts, many ways to serve.

One way is not "higher," nor one person "better" than another.

There is but one Spirit, who accomplishes all the different

works we do, acting through us.

Our 2014 Mass book is open. Candle and Sanctuary Lamp offerings are

still available for 2013 in both Churches.

The Calling of the Disciples and the

Calling of Christians

There is no voice of God which extends a call to

Jesus. But Jesus Himself offers a large number of

calls to follow Him. It is by no means of a call that

Jesus surrounds Himself with the twelve. A similar

call is made to others. All His preaching involves

what might be termed a calling: a call to follow Him

along a new path known only to Him:

“If anyone wishes to come after me.” While “many

are called, but few chosen,” this is because the

invitation to the kingdom is a personal call to which

some remain deaf.

The Church in its infancy at once recognized that

the Christian is one who is called. Peter’s first

sermon at Jerusalem is a call to Israel, similar to that

made by the prophets. For Paul there is a real

parallelism between himself, “the apostle who is

called,” and the Christians of Rome or Corinth, “the

saints who are called” to restore the Corinthians to

what they should be, Paul reminds them of their

calling. For this calling gives the Corinthian com-

munity whatever worth it has: “Consider your call.

Not many are wise in the eyes of men”. As a norm

of conduct in this world whose shape is passing

away, Paul induces each of them to remain “in the

state of life of which he was called.”

The life of the Christian is a calling because it is a

life in the Spirit. And the Spirit is the source of a

totally new world. This Spirit is “united to our

spirit” to make us responsive to the Word of the

Father and awaken in us the response of sons.

[Excerpts from the Dictionary of

Biblical Theology . . . “Calling”]

Have you heard your call?

Are you listening?

Are you afraid to answer “yes?”

Faith involves obedience.

Pray for guidance and direction.

ADULT SPIRITUALITY:

GOD’S PRESENCE/OUR AWARENESS

“Whoever loves Me will keep My word,

And My Father will love them, and

We will come to them, and make

Our dwelling with them.” (Jn. 14:23)

PENTECOST

Pentecost is the major Feast of the Holy Spirit. It is also the “Birthday of the Church”

and the beginning of Ministries within the Church.

Those many years ago, Mary, our Mother, together with the Apostles were gathered

together, − sharing prayer and companionship, in the − midst of confusion, uncertainty, and

even fear. When the Spirit of God entered that room in the form of Wind and Tongues of Fire, they were

filled WITH UNDERSTANDING AND COURAGE, WITH LOVE AND POWER. They no longer thought

of themselves, but rather of the joy of bringing others to the Lord Jesus – and so they did.

While this is an event that took place about 2,000 + years ago, it is very important for us, today, as

we are trying to walk the Journey of Faith. It is the same Holy Spirit Who came to the Apostles, Who has

also come to us – first, when we were baptized and then Whose Presence within us was confirmed and

strengthened at Confirmation.

What the Spirit of God did for the Apostles on the “Birthday of the Church”, -- He does for us. It is

the Holy Spirit who guides us in (1) Making wise decisions (2) facing the sufferings and difficulties that we

experience with a positive attitude (3) loving enough to keep going when we may want to give up.

The Spirit of God is the Power of God − and what we cannot do by ourselves, we

CAN DO with Him. Through our Baptism and Confirmation, that Power has been given to us – we have,

only, to be aware of it; to call upon the Spirit within us, and to use the Power that is already there, for

WE are the Church that was “birthed” those centuries ago. Perhaps the following Reflective Acrostic

can help us better understand what that means:

C hrist, our Head

H olying us, His members;

U niting us in the Spirit’s power,

R eflecting the Father’s care;

C hoosing to be for other –

H ead and Body, One in Triune-Love…. (Sr. Barbara Beck, osf)

A Blessed Pentecost!!!
