Dear family,
Where do you find your greatest struggle? Some deal with emoonal insecuries from what
they have suffered. Some people struggle with physical ailments like hearing or vision problems. Others are tormented with
depression or anxiety, or both! Everyone struggles with limitaons in one form or another and our feeble a%empts to hide our
brokenness only masks what eventually comes out one way or another. In our second reading St. Paul addresses his own brokenness.
“That I, Paul, might not become too elated, because of the abundance of the revelaons, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an
angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.” Scholars have long argued what exactly he was referring to since he
does not make it clear. Some think he had anger issues, others felt he struggled with great sexual temptaon while some opine that
he may have had a speech impediment. We don’t know. Then again, it really doesn’t ma%er what he was referring to, does it? The
greater truth that inspired Paul applies to any issue, it’s importance rings true for any struggle with sin or brokenness. Instead of
masking an issue, pretending to be invincible, or waing for the “right me” to follow God’s path, Paul makes it clear that God can
work even in our weakness. The truth here is that God’s limitaons are not ours and He can work through us, somemes despite us.
Paul experienced the liberaon of realizing that neither the number nor the severity of speedbumps along the way have to define
one’s success. In other words, for be%er or worse, it’s not all up to us. None of us like to run into problems, especially when they are
internal and we risk being labeled as weak, but these are all reminders that God is the one in control ulmately and His goodness is
without end. In His joy, Fr. Daniel
