October 09, 2016 • Twenty-Eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

A Note From The Pastor… Last Friday, on September 30th, we had our Annual

OktoberFest. It was a great turnout, and good fellowship

was enjoyed by all. Big thanks to the Our Lady of Humility

Women’s Club, the Our Lady of Humility Knights of

Columbus, and any other volunteers for facilita$ng this

event which required so much effort and coordina$on. This

event could not happen without them.

Last Saturday, October 1st, we had our first Student

Par$cipa$on Mass of the academic year. As we are doing

Mass counts during the month of October, I see that 299

people a#ended the Mass — a great turnout. The

a#endance at the subsequent Potluck Dinner was probably

the best since I have been here at Our Lady of Humility.

Special thanks to those who coordinated and volunteered so

generously to make this happen. Again, such events could

not happen without them.

This past Friday, October 7th, we celebrated the Memorial of Our Lady of The Rosary. This

celebra$on recalls the Victory at the Ba#le of Lepanto on Sunday, October 7, 1571. Chris$an

naval forces assembled to meet a much larger fleet of invading Muslim forces, many of whom

were Chris$an slaves captured by Muslims in earlier ba#les. Prior to this great ba#le,

Pope St. Pius V urged Europe to Pray the Rosary for the victory.

I invite everyone to learn more about the Rosary, and consider praying it every day: Unleash

the power of this calming medita$ve prayer in your life. During the month of October, there will

be many opportuni$es to pray and learn more about the Rosary.

We will have our fi*h Sunday of the month Rosary Service on Sunday, October 30th, following

the 9AM Mass. The Legion of Mary is also sponsoring a Daily Rosary during the month of

October – please see this bulle$n for details.

There will be a Public Square Rosary in Zion to Pray for our Na$on next Saturday,

October 15th, at 12 Noon. The local Public Square Rosary Rally will take place at the Zion Park

District (located on Elisha and 25th Street).

There will be a Rosary Making Workshop next Sunday at Donut Sunday. A teacher will be

available from 9AM to 12 Noon to illustrate and instruct on how to make a Kno#ed Cord Rosary.

All are welcome.

Congratula$ons to Jerry and Marie Pope who are celebra$ng their 55th Wedding Anniversary,

and to Jose and Barb Arreguin who are celebra$ng their 60th Wedding Anniversary!

God Bless,

Fr. Paul

6 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church

Rosary Making Workshop The Legion of Mary will host one more Rosary Making Workshop

this year, and it will be this month, October, which is the month of the

Holy Rosary.

We invite anyone who is interested in learning to make a Kno"ed

Cord Rosary to the next Donut Sunday, next Sunday, October 16th. Our teacher will be

available from 9AM-12 Noon to demonstrate the technique. (An experienced person can

make an en$re Rosary in approximately one hour.) We also invite those who joined us last

$me to come again, and make more Rosaries. We have ten different kinds of twine

available. We will be dona$ng all the Rosaries made with Christmas twine to the Our Lady of Humility Women’s

Club for their Holiday Bazaar. Rosaries you make for us will be donated to various groups and individuals who

request them. However, you are also welcome to make Rosaries to give away to people you know personally.

Our Lady is pleased when we teach others to Pray Her Rosary. She wants to shower the world with graces, but

needs our prayers in order to be able to do so. And what a be#er way to encourage people to Pray the Rosary,

then by giving them a Rosary you made with your own hands.

(If you have been saving crucifixes from broken Rosaries, and want to donate them to a good cause, we would

be happy to accept and repurpose them.)

Nine Reasons to Pray the Rosary Daily:

1. For World Peace.

2. As a means for calling down God’s blessing upon the family.

3. For courage in facing the hardships of life.

4. As a steady means of nurturing and persevering in the Faith.

5. For healing the evils of our day.

6. For learning Chris$an perfec$on.

7. For success in one’s voca$on in life.

8. As a powerful means of obtaining graces from God.

9. To grow in holiness, and enjoy the special protec$on of Our Lady.

If you have any ques$ons or need more informa$on, please call Mari at (847) 596-2150.

Knights Of Columbus Rosary Service The Knights of Columbus are hos$ng a fi*h Sunday of the month Rosary Service

on Sunday, October 30th, following the 9AM Mass. All are invited to join us in

praying for “A Greater Respect For All Human Life”. Mark your calendars now.

The Recita$on of the Rosary is granted a Plenary Indulgence (under the usual

condi$ons) if it is recited in a Church. The gaining of the Plenary Indulgence is

regulated by these norms:

· Five (5) decades of the Rosary must be prayed con$nuously.

· The prayers of the Rosary must be prayed vocally, and one must meditate upon the Mysteries of the Rosary.

· If the recita$on of the Rosary is public, the Mysteries of the Rosary must be announced.

If the above condi$ons are not fulfilled, the indulgence is only par$al.

A Taste Of Heaven

Awaits Us In

Eucharis!c Adora!on! Indeed, Earth is joined to

Heaven each $me we are united with the

Saints and Angels in extolling God, Who,

in worship we see, if not with the sight of

eyes, then with the eyes of faith.

We are called to abide in the

Eucharis$c Presence of our Lord, like the

Saints and Angels do in Heaven, as they

behold the glory of God, and sing His

Praise! The Saints and Angels wait upon

the Lord, and do His Will in all things.

Their presence magnifies the Lord. They

also intercede for us before the Lord.

When we look upon the Sacred Host,

we look at Jesus, the Son of God. Do we

see Him in all His glory and majesty? Do

our lips proclaim His praise? Do our souls

magnify the Lord – making Him clearer,

more in focus, and larger to others around

us? Do we place the needs of others

before Him? Are we open to the Will of

God, and strive for perfec!on in our

spiritual lives so that we, too, may one

day join the company of Saints in Heaven?

It is at this moment when we are most

in$mately in communion with God that

we experience a taste of Heaven, a

foreshadowing of what it will be like,

when, by God’s grace, we enter into

everlas$ng life. “Indeed, this is the will of

Spiritual Works Of Mercy The ar$cle today is wri#en by Lisa Brenninkmeyer

who frequently speaks to Women’s groups, and is

the author of “Walking With Purpose, Comfort The

Afflicted”. Everybody is going through something.

Some$mes they need a hug. Some$mes they just

need someone to listen. Some$mes they need a shoulder to cry on. Will you be

that friend?

When I sat down next to my friend a*er the funeral recep$on was over, the raw pain in her eyes tore into my heart.

She had just lost her teenage daughter. My friend’s story was heavy with pain. Her daughter had made the choice to

end her life. So we sat, with just quietness between us. A*er a few minutes, she spoke: “You know, this isn’t my

church.” “When we called the church to tell them of the daughter’s death, they said that they’d come to us, but they

never did. So we went elsewhere. It was just too painful to be in a place where they obviously didn’t care about us.” I

don’t believe my friend’s church doesn’t care. Most likely someone dropped the ball en$rely by accident. But what I

really wonder is where was the safety net of the church community? Afflic$on comes in many forms. We don’t wear

our heartache as visible, but we know how much pain is out there. We can’t answer all the ques$ons about the

suffering, but we can say: “I see it, and most important, I see you, I won’t let this pain swallow you or overwhelm you.”

Isn’t this the example that the Blessed Mother gave us? She didn’t shield her eyes when her Son was stripped,

beaten, and crucified. She pressed into the suffering, and stayed by His side. This is how we are asked to live.

“Comfort, comfort My people, says your God.” (–Isaiah 40:1). What a privilege it is that He trusts and calls us to be a

part of this ministry of comfort.

“Lord, open my eyes to see the invisible wounds people carry. Help us to look grace-healed eyes that search deeper,

that pause, that step closer when an aching heart is near.”
