The Easter season came to a close last Sunday as we celebrated the feast of Pentecost. We are now in the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. The predominant color of Ordinary Time is green. Ordinary Time will continue through the summer and fall, until we reach the First Sunday of Advent on December 2. During Ordinary Time, we are given the chance to follow Jesus and witness what He said and did through the guidance of St. Mark, the Evangelist. On this first Sunday in the Ordinary time season, the Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. It is our fundamental belief that God is One in Three Divine Persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. While each Person of the Holy Trinity is unique and distinct, each shares Divine unity, meaning that all three Persons of the Trinity are One and the same. We cannot
presume to totally understand this mystery, but it is God himself who revealed this truth to us. In speaking to the Apostle Phillip, Jesus said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say ‘Show us the Father?’ Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?” (Jn 14,9-10). Although it is difficult for us to understand that God is Three in One, we need only to accept it in faith. A triangle with three sides forming one geometric figure; a single shamrock with three leaves; or water (H2O) in its three states of solid, liquid or gas, are all fine examples used to explain the Trinity. While these examples can certainly help us, the reality of one God in three Persons is nevertheless beyond our ability to fully comprehend. On this Holy Trinity Sunday, let us ponder this great truth and bow before this wondrous mystery of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; One God forever and ever. Amen.
Next Sunday we will celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi is Latin for the Body of Christ. Jesus established the Sacrament of his Body and Blood, the Eucharist, at the Last Supper. This is one of the main focuses of Holy Thursday each year. While the institution of the Eucharist is celebrated on Holy Thursday, the liturgy on that day also commemorates Christ's washing of the disciples' feet, the institution of the priesthood and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. With all these events on Holy Thursday, the Eucharist did not receive its proper due. For this reason, the Feast of Corpus Christi was established under Pope Urban IV in the 13th century to focus solely on the Eucharist. The Thursday after Trinity Sunday was the selected day for Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi has been celebrated in many countries and cultures in various ways. In some countries it is even a national holiday. The main celebration is, of course, the mass. Following mass, the Eucharist is placed in the monstrance and taken in procession, usually outside the church. The procession stops at four altars along the route. The Blessed Sacrament is reverenced at each altar and an excerpt from one of the four evangelists is read. The procession concludes at the final altar with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Because there is little time between masses on Sunday, and because it is cooler in the evening, we will have the celebration of Corpus Christi on the traditional day next week Thursday, May 31st. Mass will begin at 6:00pm. After mass, the Blessed Sacrament will be taken in procession to four altars in various places on our parish grounds. Because this traditional celebration stems largely from our Polish community, the Corpus Christi celebration will be a bi-lingual event in English and Polish. We invite everyone to join us for this celebration as we honor Jesus’ Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday, May 31 at 6:00pm. Fr. Gerry
