Our Lady of Las Vegas ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

- Faith, Family, Friends -

M 11, 2018 2 — O L L V C C

Each weekday of Lent, Monday through Friday, we pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy in our church at 3:00pm. For us Christians, we know this to be the hour in which Jesus delivered over His spirit to the Father after his bitter three-hour agony on the cross. The three o’clock hour is also known as the “Hour of Mercy”. A little less than a century ago, a simple, humble Polish nun, Sister Faustina Kowalska, received a series of apparitions from Jesus himself, revealing to her the mystery of God’s Divine Mercy. In these apparitions Jesus showed Himself standing with one hand raised in blessing and the other touching his chest from which came beautiful rays of red and white light. Jesus asked Sister Faustina to have a painting of this image made so that others could see what indeed she was seeing. And below the image was to be an inscription of words which said, “Jesus, I trust in You.” Jesus instructed Sister Faustina to take the message of His mercy to the world. He asked her to remind people of God’s love for them and that they not be afraid to turn away from sin, and return to God who is waiting for them with an abundance of mercy.

Through Sister Faustina, this message began to be known in the 1930s. What is interesting is that the message is nothing new, but is a reminder of what the Church has always taught about God through scripture and tradition. The message is that God is merciful and forgiving, and that every person, no matter how deep in sin, can receive the benefits of God’s mercy. The message calls us to show mercy and forgiveness towards others as well. This is something that we pray everyday in the Lord’s Prayer: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” But in the message of Divine Mercy, there is a new and powerful focus, calling people to a deeper understanding of God’s love. A focus that helps us better understand that God’s love is unlimited and available to everyone, even to the greatest of sinners; especially people who believe they are so far away from God and alienated from Him through their sins, that they feel that there is no hope for them; that God couldn’t possibly forgive them; that God couldn’t possibly love them. The Divine Mercy message breaks through this fear and alienation with Jesus calling everyone unto Himself. Sister Faustina kept a diary of her encounters with Jesus. Not surprisingly, she was not believed at first. It took many years, many people and many hours of thorough investigation of Sister Faustina’s life and diary to finally recognize her as being credible. St. Pope John Paul II is largely credited for being the one who gave Sister Faustina her due. Finally, it was determined that her visions, message and the devotion that ensued, could be recognized and accepted by the Universal Church. In fact, Sister Faustina was the first saint to be canonized in the new millennium by Pope John Paul II. On the day of Sister Faustina’s canonization, April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II declared that the Second Sunday of Easter would be observed by the Universal Church as the Feast of Divine Mercy. This is in response to the request of Jesus himself to Sister Faustina that this feast be observed on this day. The special prayer known as the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, which is prayed using the beads of an ordinary rosary, can be prayed at anytime, but especially at 3:00pm, which is the hour of Divine Mercy. Also, a nine-day novena, beginning on Good Friday, leading to the Feast of the Divine Mercy, is a special celebration of this great and unfathomable gift of God to the entire world. We will participate in this novena, here at Our Lady of Las Vegas, beginning on Good Friday. What greater gift could we poor sinners ask from God, other than forgiveness and mercy for our sins! Jesus, I trust in You!

This week Thursday, March 15, members of our parish will help in serving a meal to the homeless and less fortunate at Catholic Charities. We are still in need of volunteers to help host, serve the guests, and bus tables from 9:15am till 12:00 noon. If you would be interested in volunteering, please contact the parish office.
