Homily for November 11, 2018
By Fr. Michael Berry, OCD
Homiletic & Pastoral Review
“Do I have enough?” We ask this question countless times in our lives, in
any number of scenarios — shopping and preparing for large meals, pack-
ing for a long trip, fueling up the car for a journey, making plans for retire-
ment, and even (from another perspective) assessing my skills and experi-
ence for a new job or (very often) providing time for a task. “Do I have
enough?” is a perennial concern in our lives.
The two widows in today’s readings, the widow of Zarephath and the
widow in the Temple, must face this question having to weigh their mate-
rial need (i.e., do I have enough? what do I need to live?) and
that justice due to God (i.e., what is the honor and worship I owe to God?).
Within the Scriptures, widows are among the poorest of Israel, since they had no rights of inheritance. They are often
mentioned together with orphans as those for whom God had particular concern, especially those neglected or oppressed
by the powerful.
During a time of famine, the prophet Elijah asks the widow of Zarephath for a “small cupful of water” and “a bit of
bread.” The man of God interrupts this widow who is preparing for what she believes will be the last meal for her and
her son, for she has nothing more. She is sure that they both will die eventually of hunger. Yet, Elijah asks that
she first prepare “a little cake” for him, and then to look after herself and her son. He asks her for a radical act of faith in
the promise of God, to put aside her immediate self-concern and to first hope in the faithfulness of God. Her choice to
provide for the prophet of God out of her very sustenance justifies her in God’s eyes and consequently “the jar of flour
did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry.”
Similarly in the Gospel, another poor widow places her “two small coins” in the temple treasury, “her whole livelihood.”
In the eyes of Jesus she outshines the rich donors who noisily toss in their large sums. Just as “man sees the appearance
but the Lord looks into the heart” (1 Sam 16:7), so God recognizes those who give their all, hoping in him, in contrast to
those who give by halves and whose worship rings hollow. God wants and “needs” the hearts of men and women, not
their wallets or purses alone; his interest in our material possessions only concerns whether these choke the heart and
provoke conceit or whether they foster charity toward others.
Both widows in the readings radically and generously acknowledge God even in the face of their extreme poverty. Love
for God leads them to put aside the question of “do I have enough?” as a first concern. Most of us, on the contrary, are
fairly adept in rationalizing away the demands of God upon our life and our time. We tell ourselves “surely, God is rea-
sonable!” in what He expects of my time and my resources. We may easily reduce the role of God to that of a benign,
offsite landlord, or we can “domesticate” Him as one who readily accommodates “my way of thinking” or simply ac-
cepts what we deem “enough.”
But God calls us to a bold generosity of heart founded upon trust in God’s abundance. He charges us to seek first his
kingdom and his righteousness, assuring us all our needs will be provided for besides (Mt 6:31). Just as Elijah encour-
ages the widow in the midst of the famine, “Do not be afraid,” so Christ repeatedly exhorts his disciples to trust in the
abundance of his mercy and love and to give of themselves following Christ’s own example.
Our reading from Hebrews fittingly proclaims that Christ’s sacrifice of love on the cross, given “once for all,” is
ENOUGH. The blood he shed freely in love for the Father and for us serves as an inexhaustible means of justification
and offers to us the forgiveness of sins. Christ’s gift of himself on Calvary is God’s final answer to our questioning, “Do
I have enough?” His perfect offering to the Father stands ready at every moment to provide for our want. Jesus is our
provision for the forgiveness of sins, but he also resembles our two widows in the totality of his gift and in his lavish
surrender to the will of his Father. May we also live our lives mindful of what God most desires of us and may our confi-
dence in his abundance enable us to live unfettered by the concern for “having enough.”

A Place to Call Home “Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation
and promotion of the poor.” -Pope Francis
Charles spent 17 years deployed at military bases throughout the world. Re-turning home after an incident involving nerve gas, he began struggling with debilitating bouts of anxiety and depression. His circumstances worsened and he couldn’t maintain a steady job. Charles moved in with his mother, but within a year she died and his childhood home went into foreclosure. Catholic Charities’ Project Veterans’ Independence, which guides homeless veterans into permanent housing so they can live independently and have ac-cess to support networks that get them back on their feet, reached out and helped Charles. “I was out of the service, out of a family, out of a job and out of a home. Catholic Charities found me and helped me to not only find a place to live - but they helped me to turn my life around.” - Charles, honorably discharged US Veteran

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Mission
With Fr. Glenn Sudano, CFR And the Franciscan Friars
of the Renewal
December 8th — December 11th
Father Glenn Sudano, CFR is a founding member of the Franciscan Friars of the renewal begun in 1987 by Capuchin friars seeking to respond in a more intentional way to the Second Vatican Council’s call for authentic renewal in religious life. Father Glenn entered the Capuchin Order in the fall of 1978, professed his solemn vows in 1982, and was ordained to the holy priesthood in June of 1984. In the spring of 1987, together with seven other Capuchins– most notably Father Benedict Groeschel and recently deceased Father Andre Apostoli– a new Franciscan initiative was born called “The Friars of the Renewal.” The community served in the South Bronx of New York City, and now has 130 friars living in 15 friaries in poor areas of the United States, Ireland, England, and Central America. Like the friars, a community of sisters named “The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal,” founded in 1988 by Father Andrew, continues to attract new vocations here and abroad. The friars and sisters are dedicated to living a simple, prayerful, and fraternal way of life by serving all by various forms of evan-gelization and hands-on care of the poor. Father Glenn has served the CFR community in various ways such as vocation director, director of pos-tulants, novice master, and General Servant (superior). He is presently stationed in Manhattan (Harlem) at Saint Joseph Friary where his time spent in the preaching apostolate, pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, and deliverance ministry.

An evening highlighting a modern day miracle was recently presented to the students who attend our
Wednesday evening session, parents and catechists. Kevin Becker, accompanied by his mom, shared the
testimony of what happened when he was in a coma, and his miraculous healing attributed to the intercession
of Blessed Pier Giorgio.
Blessed Pier Giorgio is an inspiration and role model to young Catholics because he was an ordinary person to
whom they can easily relate. Pier Giorgio was a student, an athlete, and a practical joker. He was a
handsome young man often pictured climbing mountains or hanging out sharing laughter with his friends. He
was also devoted to prayer and he received the Eucharist daily. Pope John Paul II called him “A Man of the
Beatitudes” because of the attention he paid to those less fortunate than himself. He gave away his lunch
money and train fare to the hungry, and gave the clothes off his back to the needy. Pier Giorgio lived in the
20th century and died at the age of 24 from polio, which he likely contracted from the poor people he helped.
Kevin Becker is also a role model for young Catholics. He balanced being a student and lacrosse player with
having a prayerful relationship with God and participating in Mass regularly. Kevin had never heard of Pier
Giorgio. One night, he fell off the rooftop deck of a house he rented with some of his college classmates. His
skull was fractured in five places and every lobe of his brain was badly damaged. He was near death, and
doctors said that if he somehow managed to survive, he would be severely handicapped and mentally
impaired. Kevin’s cousin suggested that the family pray for the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio, who
needed a miracle attributed to him in order to become a Saint. Kevin’s mom hung a picture of Pier Giorgio in
Kevin’s hospital room. The next morning, Kevin opened his eyes. Gradually, he became more responsive and
eighteen days after the accident, he walked out of the hospital. Doctors were astonished by his recovery.
Scans and test results were as though he had never been injured at all!
While he was in the deep coma, Kevin recalled being back at his dorm house with a young man named
Giorgio who claimed to be Kevin’s new roommate. They bonded over a common interest in sports. Giorgio
made Kevin focus on schoolwork and said that Kevin wasn’t ready to leave the house, meaning that he wasn’t
ready to die. After his recovery, Kevin shared this story with his mom, and when she showed Kevin the picture of
Pier Giorgio, Kevin said that it was the same man.
Kevin asked himself why God chose him for this miracle. He believes it is a gift to share his story with others as
an example of the power of God. If God can do this for Kevin, imagine what He can do for you! It’s a reminder
not to turn your back on God because He will never turn his back on you and He will always shine upon you.
Kevin’s advice to our students is to love God, love your family, love your friends, and love your enemies. Do all
of this and you will never have a bad day.

WE NEED YOUR HELP As Thanksgiving approaches, we ask all to be as generous as possible in contributing to our food pantry. We will be making Thanksgiving Food Baskets for many needy families in our parish. We will be assembling baskets in the next coming weeks. Last year through your generosity, we were able to provide Thanksgiving baskets to more than 260 families from our parish and the imme-diate surrounding area.
Below is a shopping list of items we will be using to make up the baskets. We will begin accepting donations now through November 13th. May we ask you to inspect the expiration dates on in-tended donations? Please bring the items to the Food Pantry no later than Monday, Nov. 12th, since we will be distributing Thanksgiving Baskets the week of Nov. 12th. Parish Outreach hours are: Monday/Tuesday / Thursday, 10:00am to 2:00pm, Wednesday, 10:00am to 11:30am.
Please feel free to donate any or all of the items on the list to complete a basket. Please do not bring any perishable items including turkeys or hams at this early date, because we do not have the facilities to store them. Kindly consider a Gift Card in lieu of a turkey. However if you choose to donate a frozen turkey or ham, please bring them to the Outreach office only on the days of November 13th, (Tues), November 14th, (Wed) and November 15th (Thurs), when we will be distributing the Thanksgiving food baskets. Thank you for your continued kindness and generosity to our neighbors in need.
*Food store gift cards would be much appreciated as they provide for perishable items*
This would be an excellent opportunity for Girl Scout Troops, Boy Scout Troops and Confirmation Candidates as a Christian Service Project to participate in this
much needed community effort.

“Ministry of Consolation”
Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonder-ful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes “Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compas-sion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.
Created to provide warmth, caring and personal atten-tion to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.
Thank you so much to all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volun-teer. Thank you for your consideration.
Our Parish depends solely on your generosity to meet each week’s expenses. Our regular Sunday collections account for more than 60% of our operating budget. Your continued support, especially during these difficult economic times, is both needed and appreciated.

fullness of life as God intended. Daily prayer: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of
the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen)
HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer & Healing, Gatherings,
and Hope & Healing Weekend Retreats. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for
Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Call 866-575-0075 or email: [email protected]
VISIBILITY MATTERS: Weekly prayerful presence at Planned Parenthood, Massapequa - Saturdays 10:30am-12pm, 35
Carmans Rd, Massapequa (across from the mall parking lot). For info: 516-541-8056.
BABY’S LIFE BEFORE BIRTH
My heart is beating at 18-25 days.
The foundation for my nervous system is in place at 20 days.
My skeleton is complete at 42 days and I have reflexes.
My brain waves can be detected as early as 43 days.
At 8 weeks my brain and all body systems are present, and I look like a miniature doll.
During weeks 9 & 10 I squint, swallow and can make a fist.
By the 11th and 12th weeks I am moving my arms and legs, sucking my thumbs and breathing amniotic
fluid. All my systems are working.
My movements by 16 weeks are quite active and I can be seen performing somersaults on ultrasound but
am not yet felt by my mother.
From the 3rd month on nothing new develops. I continue to grow in size and by 20 weeks I have hair on
my head, weigh 1 pound and am 12 inches tall.
Life, what a beautiful choice! Mother and Child, we love you both, please let us help! If you need help, or if you can help:
