Dear Parishioners,
Once there was a young man who was having doubts about the existence of God. So one day he paid a visit to a monk who had a reputation for holiness.
He asked the monk ‘Do you believe in God?’.
‘Yes, I do,’ the monk answered.
‘On what evidence do you believe?’ the young man asked.
‘I believe in God because I know him’, came the reply. ‘I experience the presence of God within me every day.’
‘But how is that possible?’ the youth asked.
‘When we love, we experience God, and doubt vanishes like early morning mist before the sun’, replied the monk.
The youth thought about this for a while, then asked, ‘How can I achieve this kind of certainty?’
‘By acts of love’, came the reply. ‘Try to love your neighbours; love them actively and unceasingly. As you learn to love them more and more, you will become more and more convinced of the existence of God and the immortality of the soul. This has been tested. This is the true way.’
The monk was only echoing the words of St John: ‘My dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love’ (Second Reading). Love is a precondition for a true understanding of life and especially of God.
Love is the best teacher we have. But it does not come of its own accord. It is dearly bought. It often demands many years of persevering toil before a person can reach the point where he or she is able to love. There is a big gap between knowing God and loving God. Not to love is not to know God. Where love is, God is; where God is, love is. To know is not to prove, or to explain.
Hate is a bad thing. It’s bad to hate anything. It is a good thing to love something, even a rosebush. ‘For myself I am contented to be a small gardener who loves his plants’ (Van Gogh).
We will celebrate Anzac Day on Monday with special Anzac Day Masses at 9.00am in both our Parish Churches at Sunnybank and Acacia Ridge. The Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima will be celebrated at our Acacia Ridge Church on Friday evening 13th May. There will be a procession before Mass with the procession beginning about 6.00pm and the Mass to be celebrated at 7.00pm. All are invited to attend. Next weekend for 4 consecutive weeks, we will be gathering statistics on attendance at our Masses at both our Churches, starting at the Vigil Masses on Saturday, 30th April.

Fifth Sunday of Easter: Year C
Introduction: Today’s Gospel calls us to love one another as Jesus has loved us. This means supporting each other and sharing our gifts together in the midst of the community. By this love, others will know that we are disciples, reflecting in our lives that same glory of God.
First Reading: Acts 14: 21-27 Paul and Barnabas come to the end of the First Missionary Journey. Having faced opposition and physical attack, they can still give thanks for all that ‘God had done with them’.
Gospel: John 14: 23-29 The Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, teaches us all things and brings us a peace which the world cannot bring us.
YEAR OF MERCY FROM POPE FRANCIS
It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. On Friday 8th April 2016, Pope Francis published a new papal document called, Amoris Laetitia, ‘The Joy of Love: On Love in the Family’ at the Vatican in Rome. It is about marriage and family life. The papal document is also known as an ‘Apostolic Exhortation’. It is available to read and download on the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference website: https://www.catholic.org.au/synod-2015/home If you don’t have time to read all 256 pages of the Exhortation, you can access a summary on the bishops conference website.

She will highlight the pivotal roles played by our Parish Priests, Fr James Brosnan, Fr Tom Hegerty, Fr Ray Kearney and Fr Dan Ryan in building and expanding the physical structures of our Church in the heart of Sunnybank. She will draw special attention to the vibrant spiritual life of our Parish throughout the years.

Sunnybank/Acacia Ridge Parishes Friendship Group Our next Friendship Group Meeting will be on Wednesday, 27th April in the Avocado Room starting at 9.00am. This will be a presentation by St John Ambulance. Come along and learn a few life-saving things!
Booking will also continue at this meeting for our next bus trip on Wednesday, 11th May. This is a trip to the Caloundra RSL with morning tea, entertainment and lunch all provided for the fantastic price of only $40. Come along and enjoy a fun filled day! There are still places available.

OLOL and OLOF Men’s barbeque breakfast We invite men of all ages to come together in fellowship and enjoy a full barbeque breakfast on the first Saturday morning of each month in the Avocado Room at Paloma Reception Centre at Sunnybank. The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, 7th May 2016 from 7.00am to 9.00am in the Avocado Room of the Paloma Reception Centre. Bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, toast, jams, juice, tea and coffee are all available for the cost of $10 per person. LifeNite is a youth group for those in grade 9-12, new
people are ALWAYS welcome. It is a place where young people can come together create lifelong friendships,
have fun and learn about how the faith can be relevant in your life! It’s a place where the tough questions can
be asked and real answers are given!
