Dear Padre, What is the proper way to treat sacred art in church? It upsets me to see that people place of hymnals, pamphlets, plants and other objects at the base of a sacred statue. Catholics are a sacramental people. We use objects and works of art to reveal and remind us of God’s presence and love acting in our lives. So we should respect statues, paintings, and sacred art. These items are valuable and make our churches beautiful. Sacred art helps us to enter into prayer. We do not adore these items as idols, but they help us to mediate and contemplate on God. Therefore, we should respect the sensibilities of other people. Too many items around a work of art may distract people or even damage the art. So everything should be kept in its right place. For example hymnals belong in their proper place. On the other hand, items near the art may enhance our prayer experience. A prayer card that is associated with a statue may be nearby, or flowers may enhance the beauty of the art. But this should always be done tastefully and with the parish’s permission. In this way, we keep God’s house clean and in order. Everything has a reason for where it is, and everything should in its proper place. FR. DON KIRCHNER, CSsR [email protected]

FUNERAL LITURGIES…Funerals give the opportunity to remember and pray for the deceased and to support and console the bereaved. A funeral Mass is celebrated when the body of the deceased or the cremains—cremated remains—of the deceased are present. This Mass of the church follows the usual liturgical funeral rites. If the cremains are present, the cremains may be sprinkled with holy water and incensed at the appropriate times, conferring the same respect

normally given to the body of the deceased. However no pall is used. The cremains are usually placed on a table near the paschal candle in the location a casket would occupy during a funeral liturgy. A Memorial Mass

is celebrated when there are no remains of the deceased present in the church.

RELICS…In the Catholic vocabulary relics are the remains of the saints. We venerate them, not in themselves, but in honor of the holy people whom they represent, and in acknowledgement of the good work God has done through them. There are three classes of relics. First class relics are actual bits of bone or hair from the saint. Second class relics are items that belonged to the person, such as clothing, devotional items, etc. Third class relics are items that have touched the first class relics. We venerate these as sacramentals. We do not credit them with miraculous power, but honor God as responsible for any miracles or good works done by the saint, or through use of the relic. We acknowledge that God alone has the miraculous power.

ALTAR RELICS…Most Catholic churches have relics

set in some part of the altar. It is believed that this

tradition originated with the Eucharistic celebrations in

the catacombs during the period of persecution in Rome.

Later development saw the altars erected over the

tombs of saints, or more simply, the relics of the saints

were placed beneath the altar. The symbolism of this

use of relics emphasizes that it is the Eucharist itself

from which the saints derived their holiness. Relics are

now set into the altar stone. Our altar has one but no

documentation can be found to specify from whom or

where the relic came from. IF YOU ARE 18 OR OVER…and you are living with your parents, we ask that you please register yourself separately from your parents. You may use the form below to do so and we will send you a registration form or you may download and print a form from the home page of our website. Thank you. CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR PHONE #?
