PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“Abraham persisted … Please … let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time … what if there are at least ten innocent people? … He replied …

for the sake of those ten … I will not destroy the city …” Genesis Abraham is a wonderful example of being an intercessor. We are called to pray for oth-ers, all, without exception, even our enemies. Our mission is to become prayer warriors, offering our lives so that all men and women will find their way to God. Our prayers are an-swered!

“I will give thanks to You … O Lord … with all my heart … for You have heard the words of my mouth …” Psalm 138

He lifts us from all darkness, frees us from all evil.

“Even when you were dead in transgressions … He brought you to life

along with Christ …” Colossians

Our prayers for others are powerful, in fact there is no greater power than prayer.

“Ask and you will receive … seek and you will find … knock and the door will be opened to you …” Luke

Lord, teach us to pray! Monsignor Lorenzo

HIT THE PARK SAFELY THIS SUMMER

A great way to beat summer boredom is to head out to the park and play. For many parents, parks pro-vide the space and place for children to play with oth-ers and burn off some energy by running around and exploring. However, even in your own neighborhood parks, parents should be vigilant, and should prepare children with basic safety guidelines. Go over the posted rules of the playground with your children, and make sure they understand the boundaries of where they can and cannot play.

Lord, Hear our prayers.

HEART TO HEART

There is nothing wrong with “pestering” God (Matthew 7:7), but think: if this were all we did with our loved ones, what quality of relationship would that be? Instead, God seeks a personal relationship with each of us - to con-verse with us heart-to-heart. Of course, tell Him what’s on your heart, but don’t forget to listen to Him, too.

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” James 4:8

LIFE’S PERSISTENT QUESTIONS Most of us can probably imagine (or remember) the deligh ul ques ons a young child might ask with inno-cence and curiosity. “What is air?” “How does a bird fly?” Answers are o en met with another ques on: “Why?” No answer to that ques on is ever adequate, and so the child persists in asking—“Why? Why? Why??” A quest for knowledge? Of course, but the child’s persistence can only flourish in a rela onship of trust. These conversa ons between the child and, typ-ically, an older rela ve have the power to deepen con-fidence and in macy. How like prayer this is! Humans are frail. We have ques ons, fears, needs. And so we pray—but how? How do we speak or relate at all to the Lord of endless life, the God of our salva-

on? OUR ABBA Today’s scriptures provide some answers. We dis-cover that, like Abraham in Genesis and Jesus in Luke’s Gospel, it’s all about rela onship. In Genesis, the Israelites were s ll trying to learn who this Creator God was and what was the nature of the rela onship between the divine and the human. Today we find Abraham in “conversa on” with God, who is contempla ng the ruin of the ci es of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their evil behavior. The in -macy of Abraham’s rela onship with God allows him to plead for the innocent, to nego ate with God about the intended destruc on. The disciples experience Jesus in deep prayer. Asked to teach them how to pray, Jesus gives them his own prayer to the God he knows as Abba. The Lord’s Prayer, slightly different in Luke’s Gospel, contains ele-ments that would be familiar to the disciples. But call-ing God “Father” was deeply in mate and probably somewhat startling. This is the kind of prayer to which we are called. Jesus teaches us that we, his sisters and brothers, can call God “Our Father.” How powerful these two words are when we pray them together!

Lucas

¡Señor, enseñanos a orar!

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles ar-ranges an annual visit every parish by

a missioner seeking financial support for its work. This year our guest is Sr. Elvira Rios, ODN from the Sisters of the Company of Mary.

The Sisters of the Company of Mary, Our Lady are the members of a Roman Catholic religious order founded by Jeanne de Lestonnac (1556-1640) in France in 1607. The Order's mission is educa on, focused on the person in all their uniqueness

Today the Company of Mary numbers about 1,500 members working in over 400 teaching ins -tu ons in 26 na ons across the world. These range from nurseries to university colleges and hospitals. The Sisters of the Company see their work of educa-

on as involving the development of the whole per-son, possible in a range of se ngs. A large number of lay people, both women and men, have become a part of the work of Company in fulfilling its mission.

We are grateful for your generosity.
