Monsignor Richard Martini

Dear Parishioners:Some events of childhood become fixed in our minds and they act like icons. We can look at the scene on the screen of our memory, and it expands to reveal the layers and layers of love that our mothers showed us.One such icon, if painted, would show a living room with a papa bear sized, red naugahyde easy chair in a corner. An eight year-old boy is flopped across it in a fetal position with his head on one arm rest and his lower legs and feet dangling over the other. His mother has balanced her right hip on the tiniest, remaining corner of the seat cushion by his thighs. Her right hand is gently caressing his forehead.My mother seemed to have read my mind. I never told her that I was feeling ill; she just knew it. I never asked her to soothe me; she just did it. She likely had no time in her hectic life to attend to me at that moment; she just made it. I loved her love – never doubting that it was there. Some might say that I took it for granted. Words cannot express its importance to me or my gratitude for it.I imagine that each of you have your own “icons” of your mothers’ love, revealing again the unwarranted graceful gift she offered you. Where does a mother’s love come from? I dare not pretend to know. But mothers know. It’s there! It wells up! It overflows!As an enthusiast and observer of icons, I invite you to join me in delighting in the women who have meant the world to us – stay home moms, working moms, married moms, single moms, living moms, deceased moms – all our moms. Amazing women! Women who find a way to balance so much and still love and care and nurture.Mom, I love you. Moms, we love you!

* * * *A special invitation from Father Martini

Moms, you have a lot of wisdom and insight. May I ask you to share some of it with us? I would like your input on the Religious Education Programs at OLPH. On our new website’s homepage, please click on the scrolling picture for the survey or use the Education tab. The education page will invite you to take a survey for one or all of the following: Religious Education Program/CCD, for Little Church or for our Confirmation Program.

Bible Study Will be Taking A Summer Break!Our Tuesday evening and Thursday morning Bible Studies will be taking a summer break but will resume in September! But keep checking the bulletin for updates and special Sunday sessions during the summer!

COME, LORD JESUS The first reading today may seem somewhat out of place. Doesn’t the “feast of Stephen” evoke memories of the Christmas season, rather than Easter? But it is most relevant for the days after the Ascension. Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, stands at his Father’s right hand to welcome Stephen into heaven. Indeed, that is why Jesus has gone before us—to welcome us into God’s house. In the second reading the focus on heavenly reward continues: the new day coming with its hope and expectation. There is also an echo here of Advent, but it is now the fulfillment of those hopes, the resolution of all questions and difficulties.

John’s Gospel today is part of the section known as the “high priestly prayer” of Jesus. It was his prayer at the Last Supper as he prepared for his roles as priest and victim. But it is also his prayer as the glorified and ascended high priest, the giver of glory, the center of faith, and the master of his destiny and ours.

The Year of FaithThe final statement in the Apostles’ Creed says: “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.”The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity, is also known as the “Paraclete,” which means “advocate,” or “he who is called to one’s side” (CCC 692). The Holy Spirit is called to our side to build, animate, and sanctify the Church (CCC 747) and continually inspires God’s people and moves us to do God’s will.“Holy” means to be set apart for God. “Church” comes from the Greek “ekklesia,” which is a combination of words meaning “to call out of,” because we are called out of the world to be a people set apart for God. The word “catholic” comes from the Greek word “katholikos,” which means “universal” in reference to all people of all nations being part of the Church. Notice how in the Creed it uses a lowercase “c” in catholic but a capital “c” in Church. Why do you think that is? Another thing to think about is a popular statement that says, “The Church doesn’t have a mission. The mission has a Church.” Based on this, why do you think it is important for the Church to exist and for what purpose? Remember the fours aspects of the Church: it is one, it is holy, it is catholic, and it is apostolic.The communion of saints, that is the unity of all the saints throughout all time, is an extension of the Church universal. They have been and still are members of the Church. They, like we do for each other, pray for us when we need God’s help.Christ gave the authority to his apostles to forgive sins when he appeared to them and breathed the Holy Spirit upon them in John 20:22-23. This speaks to the power of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) to forgive us of our sins. “Christ who died for all men desires that in his Church the gates of forgiveness should always be open to anyone who turns away from sin.” (CCC 982)We, as an Easter people, believe in the resurrection of the dead because that is what Christ has promised us. He promised that he would raise us on the Last Day and that he is the way, the truth, and the life. “In death, the separation of the soul from the body, the human body decays and the soul goes to meet God, while awaiting its reunion with its glorified body” (CCC 997). The resurrection of the dead is the reunification of our souls with our glorified bodies. “Life everlasting” refers to the life that we will have with God for all eternity.“In Hebrew, amen comes from the same root word as the word ‘believe.’ This root expresses solidarity, trustworthiness, faithfulness. And so we can understand why ‘Amen’ may express both God’s faithfulness towards us and our trust in him.” (CCC 1062) To believe is to say “amen.”More of the Church’s teaching on this statement from the Creed can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church numbers 683-1065.Who knew that in the one minute it takes for us to say the Creed that we actually say so much? Our faith is so rich in teaching that we can spend a lot of time to unpack what we say and do and still find more treasures there! So go satisfy your curiosity and enjoy learning more about how God has been loving you through our faith. Happy Year of Faith!

PAGE SEVEN MAY 12, 2013PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Please remember in your prayers all of the seriously ill or deceased members of our parish, for whom we pray at Sunday Mass. Please call the Pastoral Center on Monday to include a name for the following weekend's bulletin. FOR THE SICK:

Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sisters whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul. Amen.

FOR THE DECEASED: Frances Ditomasso, Andrea Reyes, Rosalina PerezGod, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of your people, hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

PAGE EIGHT MAY 12, 2013Queridos feligreses;
