FROM FR. DAN’S DESK…

Next weekend we celebrate the end of our Easter Season with the great FEAST of PENTECOST! We remember the great gift given to the Church on the First Pentecost – the promise of the Holy Spirit to be with us always! We know that even as we have been separated and without the experience of Mass and the Eucharist in person for these many weeks, the HOLY SPIRIT has been with us and guiding us throughout this journey in the desert! We have never been alone! I am so excited that our “Graduate Banner” came in! I ordered a 6 foot by 10-foot vinyl banner that we will put up on our church front lawn, recognizing our 26 Parish High School Graduates from all the various high schools they attend! Especially for our High School Graduates, I know it is tough not to have a “traditional” graduation. We wanted to do something to recognize them as well as our College Graduates, and so we will be doing a combined celebration at one of the Masses on the Weekend of August 14/15. The Diocese is suggesting that every parish on that weekend, recognize their high school and college graduates. We will be working on a special celebration – more info to come! Again, as of the writing of this column, I do not know the date we will be able to Re-Open the Church and begin celebrating Masses, but I know it’s coming soon! Some of the Parish Pastoral Staff and I have been preparing behind the scenes, for various scenarios that might become part of the Directives of Bishop for our Re-Opening. I am preparing a letter that I will send to every parishioner as soon as I know the re-opening date, and that letter will include details of what people will need to know when we resume Masses. Bishop has clarified 6 points that will most likely be part of the opening: The Sign of Peace will continue to be suspended; there will be No Reception of the Precious Blood from the cup (which is not our custom here anyway); Only Communion in the hand; Holy Water/Baptismal Font emptied; Social distancing of 6 feet; and Masks will be required to be worn at Mass. Bishop will offer more specifics as we get closer to the time of re-opening. If anyone is in need of a cloth mask, we have some at the Office. Please call the Parish Office and we can put them in an envelope with your name on it at the glass doors near the Office. I pray that we will continue to be the caring Parish Family we have been during the quarantine, and be respectful of these directives given by Bishop. As a community, we value all our members from young to old. As one who is now in that “vulnerable” age group, I will fight for us to be careful and considerate of all parishioners’ needs! I received a letter recently from the Westfield Food Pantry outlining what their efforts have been to continue to provide food assistance in our community. From what I read, they have done an amazing job! And as you can imagine with the economic crisis associated with the virus, unemployment and rising grocery prices, have all increased the need to support those who don’t have enough. Thank you to those of you who have brought in non-perishable food items during the pandemic. We continue to collect such items at the Parish Office. You may leave items outside the glass doors and someone will be along and bring them inside. Our thanks to our Parishioner – Rosemarie Hogedon - who picks up these food items every week or so and delivers them to the Pantry. The Westfield Food Pantry reminds everyone that they are also accepting monetary donations which will help them to meet increasing needs in our community. Checks may be made payable to: Westfield Food Pantry, and sent to: Westfield Food Pantry, 101 Meadow Street, Westfield, MA 01085. Father’s Day is about a month away, and like with Mother’s Day, we will remember all fathers – living and deceased – during the month of June and on Father’s Day Weekend. Envelopes are available in the tote at the Parish Office. Please send in names of fathers and they will be places in a Basket on the Altar at all Masses during the month of June, and during the week will be at the Tabernacle. Finally, this weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, and normally we would have our annual Memorial Day Ceremonies at our Veteran’s Garden. Along with many other cities, the City of Westfield will not have a Memorial Day Parade this year, but there will be a small private ceremony which will be taped and made available on the public access TV channel. Our ceremonies will not happen this year either, but we will remember in our prayers this Memorial Day Weekend - all the fallen men and women who have served our Country. We look forward to Veteran’s Day when God-willing, we will be able to have a public ceremony! GOD BLESS! FR. DAN

Remember that there are many ways to be with our Lord during this time - you can come visit the Outdoor Stations of the Cross Garden opposite the Chapel, and spend time with the Lord there. Stations Booklets are in the mailbox at the entrance to the Garden. You can also visit the Mary Garden and St. Francis Garden – benches have been put out. You can pray the Rosary or enjoy the sunshine as the weather improves. In this time of not being able to receive the Eucharist, I urge everyone to include in their prayers the following:

Prayer to Make a Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

LETTER FROM BISHOP ROZANSKI

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Soon, our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Please prayerfully consider supporting the collection this year. Fully 50% of collected funds stay right here in the Diocese of Springfield, and the other 50% support communications projects in the United States and around the world.

In 1972, Jesuits in Vietnam founded the Dac Lo TV station to broadcast historical documentaries, public education, children’s shows, and other programming. But the project was suppressed under the Communist regime after the Vietnam War. Now, Vietnamese Jesuits are once again producing videos, Catholic books, an audio prayer app in Vietnamese, and other media to help build faith and serve both Catholics and nonbelievers. One of these innovative programs—Audiovisual Catechism Materials About the Seven Sacraments—helps young people learn and apply Catholic teaching in their lives. Called Có gì hay? (“Anything good?”—Jn 1:46), the video series features both professional actors and students, with scripts that address the needs of young people as identified in surveys. Posted on websites and social media, the videos support the work of missionaries and catechists. The project shows the power of digital communication to spread and teach the Good News.

Your support of the Catholic Communication Campaign is instrumental for producing this series and other innovative programs around the world.

For more information about the collection and the projects it supports, visit www.usccb.org/ccc.

Support the collection and build community. Support the collection and connect with Christ.

Sincerely in Christ,

+Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski Bishop of Springfield
