PRAYER FOR THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR
At the end of this school year we give thanks to God: For all the teaching and learning that has taken place in our school, both
in and out of the classroom, For the talents and gifts that have been shared and the challenges that
have been faced; For the burdens that have been lifted and the hurts that have been
healed;
For the respect and care that has been given. We give thanks for the friendships that have just begun and for those that
have grown. For the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles,
For the hope that has lifted our hearts on the dark days and for the love
that has kept us going. We give thanks for the community that we are, and we ask you Lord,
Bless our families as we take our holidays, may our time together leave us
with memories to cherish. Pour out your love on us that we may return renewed and refreshed to
continue our journey together . We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen
Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,
Our students completed the year on Friday with a
Beach Day at the Dunsborough Boat Ramp. We were
blessed with beautiful weather for a most enjoyable
day. As always, the behaviour of all students was
exemplary. A fitting way to finish a very successful
school year.
The safety of the children whilst in the water was
enhanced by the presence of a group of volunteer surf life savers from our local Smiths Beach Club.
My thanks to Leanne Verhoeff for organising this and for the members who gave up their time to
help us.
Christmas Play and Awards Night
Our annual Christmas Play was another opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved this
year. Congratulations to the year five students for their leadership of the play, with high quality
accompaniment from the impressive whole school choir.

Our Lady of the Cape Primary School is a community where each child is
valued as an individual and nurtured spiritually, by many hearts working
together as one voice to fulfil their overall potential.
Many Hearts, One Voice
14 December 2017
As mentioned during the evening, Mrs Horrocks has had to take some sick leave in the last few
weeks. Fortunately we were able to employ Mrs Pippa Nimmo to complete the preparations for the
play, and to lead the 270 choir members most professionally. Prior to moving to Dunsborough, Mrs
Nimmo was the music teacher at Our Lady of Fatima in Palmyra. My thanks from all at OLC to Pippa
for making the evening such a success. Thanks also to Brendan Jagoe, John Hogan and Mr Ben
Danaher for providing the sound and lighting. Finally, thanks to Mrs Delane and Mr Torrese for
organising and directing the evening which was expertly hosted by our 2017 leaders; Nelson Lacey,
Evie Valmadre, Cooper Smith and Mia Omodei.
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the student leadership team for 2018.
Congratulations to Nina Beers (Head Girl), Owen Murphy (Head Boy), Demi Buxcey (Deputy Head
Girl) and Rhy Clark (Deputy Head Boy). Congratulations also to all award winners
We look forward to a continuation of the excellent leadership provided by our 2017 leaders and
year six students.
Kindy Nativity Plays
During the last week of school, both kindy classes presented a beautiful nativity play for their families.
It was great to see such good attendance with many grandparents also able to appreciate the
wonderful year our kindy children have enjoyed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Horrocks, Mrs Jackson and Mrs Sweeny for making
the first year of school so enjoyable and rewarding for the children. The staff form an exceptional
team and are well supported by parent volunteers. My thanks to all involved.
Second Semester Reports
Second semester reports were sent home last Friday. I read all reports and was impressed with the
levels of growth and improvement being made by all students. I ask parents to read the comments
carefully as teachers put considerable time and effort into describing the learning that has
happened this year, together with sharing some goals for future learning where necessary. My
thanks to the teachers for your professional, affirming and diagnostic reports. I urge parents to read
the description of the levels that can be found on the inside of the front cover. Please be aware
that if a student is receiving a “c” grade they are progressing at the required year level.
Note: All reports which haven’t been collected by the end of today will be sent by mail tomorrow.
Reporting on Support and Extension Programs
This year we have helped a total of 52 students to make impressive improvement in reading and
literacy as a result of participation in “Mini”, “Multi” and “Maclit”. Certificates detailing the progress
of all students have been sent home as each student completes the program. My thanks to our
Learning Support Coordinator, Mrs Bradley and her team of “lit” leaders; Mrs Kartana, Mrs Keast, Ms
Holt and Mrs Derickx for all their work in facilitating such amazing improvement.
We also introduced Junior Elementary Maths Mastery (Jemms) this year to provide extra support for
students in years three and four in the area of Maths. Ms Holt has been providing this program with
great success for the children involved.
The other very successful program that has been available is in the area of maths extension, this
year mainly focussed on problem solving, provided by Mr Torrese for students in years three to six.
My thanks to the teachers and staff facilitating these programs and for providing the written reports
to accompany second semester reports detailing the growth made possible by these innovations.
Stage 5 Buildings Completed Before Christmas
Our new classrooms and library will be finished by Thursday 21st December, allowing us to set up the
rooms for the start of 2018. Our year five and six students are looking forward to moving into their
new classrooms and all students will be able to enjoy the refurbished and extended library. The car
parks are complete, a really attractive entry statement will be put in place this weekend and we
have managed to gain some additional funding to bituminize the “Kiss and Drop” road off Sloan
Drive.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our architect, Garry Holland and Rob Kusal and Daniel
Momsen from Innovest for the completion of a building program of excellent quality. I am thrilled
with the provision of such effective learning environments. I would also like to thank the two Catholic
Education WA consultants, Bob Niven and Cathy Carr for their support and guidance. Finally, my
thanks to Board members, Mike Valmadre and Anton Smith for utilising their skill and experience as
builders to support the build, especially in the planning stages. As always, Mr Hogan was also readily
available to assist the builders and tradespeople when required. A team effort with an exceptional
result.

Staff Changes in 2018
As mentioned previously, we have Mrs Sandy Ricciardone joining us as a year four teacher, and Mrs
Alice Tippett joining us in year two next year.
Congratulations to Mrs Jasper who has gained a position as an Education Assistant at St Mary
Mackillop College. Although sorry to be leaving our school, where she has given exceptional
service, Nicole has had an opportunity to increase her hours closer to home. I wish her all the very
best in her new position and in her ongoing study to become a teacher. The good news is that
Nicole may be back in the future to do a teaching practice in our school.
Fortunately we have a team of very professional and well qualified Education Assistants on staff to
replace Mrs Jasper, with Mrs Annert taking over Nicole’s support duties.
Joggers for 2018
Just a reminder if people are buying new joggers for next year over the holidays that they need to
be predominantly white or light grey (75%). Please also avoid, or replace, brightly coloured laces.
Enrolments for Next Year
We still have vacancies in all classes except for year 3 for 2018. I will be at school until Tuesday 19th
December. If you know of any families who may be interested in enrolling after that date, please
encourage them to ring and leave a message. We will be checking messages throughout January
to follow up on any further enquiries.
School Fees
As a growing and developing school, we need school fees paid promptly so we can continue to
provide the resources and facilities to promote learning for all students.
The prompt payment of fees by families is much appreciated and has really helped this year. Could
any families with overdue fees please pay them as soon as possible to help us balance our budget
for 2018.
If parents need help, please contact Sandra or Des for a confidential meeting to arrange a
payment plan.
Thank You
After a year of huge growth and development in our school, I need to express some words of
appreciation. There are many wonderful things happening in our school as a result of the positive
engagement and response from the students. I am blessed to work with such dedicated and
professional staff who constantly go to great lengths both as individuals and as a team to help all
students, families and each other. We have also had exceptional support and involvement of our
parent body. The School Board and P&F are the bodies of parents who are highly involved in the
school, but at OLC this level of parental support goes much further with all families actively
supporting everything we do.
Christmas Wishes
May in all in our community have a holy and joyful Christmas with family and a safe and enjoyable
holiday. I wish you every blessing for the New Year.

A very special thank you to the Food Committee, Decorations Committee and all

wonderful atmosphere for the enjoyment of both students and adults alike. The fabulous and
