Epiphany Blessing of the Home 2016

This year we celebrate Epiphany on January 3. During the Christmas season, especially on the feast of the Epiphany, it is traditional to bless homes, including passageways and doorways.

Often related to these blessings is a ritual of “chalking” the doors of the home with the numbers of the year separated by the initials, CMB. The letters traditionally refer to the legendary names of the three kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar (Scripture neither names them nor says there were three of them). Another tradition refers to it as the abbreviation of the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat, translated as “May Christ bless this house.”

Next weekend we will distribute blessed chalk to take home and bless your home:

Use this blessed chalk and mark on the lintel of your door

20 + C + M + B + 16 saying:

Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar followed the star of God’s Son who became human 2016 years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen. OR

As this household has been given the light of Christ through baptism, let us pray that this home shines radiantly with the love of God to be a shelter of peace for all who visit and dwell in it as we sign all of our doorways.

Thoughts From Fr. Tom

MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope your celebrations of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were blessed ones and that you were able to spend time with family and friends. We continue our celebration of Christ’s birth this weekend with the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. As we rejoice at the miracle of Christ’s birth, God becoming one of us through Jesus, we also remember that Jesus spent human life among a fami-ly. As we hear in the Gospel today, Jesus shared in the faith of his parents and traveled with them to the temple. We also hear, that like any child, he caused his parents to be worried and concerned. Jesus was missing for three days and after finding him, Mary says: Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. This story begins to reveal Jesus’ identity when he responds: Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house? Jesus then returns with his family and advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man. As we draw strength from the example of the Holy Family, may our families be blessed and a place for us to grow in holiness. Don’t forget that we Christians celebrate Christmas for several weeks. Even though the decorations may come down and the lights may be put away, we continue to rejoice at the light of Christ coming in to our world. You might consider leaving up some symbol of Christmas, like your Nativity scene, for the full season which lasts until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on January 10. Let’s keep the light shining for all to see. We are grateful for all those who share of their time and talents to make our Masses for Christmas Eve & Day so beautiful. A special thanks to our Mass Coordinators, Lectors, Communion Ministers, Greeters, Ushers, Servers, Musicians, Cantors, members of our various Choirs, and those who helped decorate the church. We are blessed by the generosity and service of so many. At our Christmas Masses, we gave a book to our parishioners titled Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly. We hope you will use this as a faith formation tool and grow your faith this Christmas season. We will be offering book discussion clubs later in January. If you were not here for our Christmas Masses, please check the Gathering Space or with the Parish Office for any available copies. This week we usher in the new year and celebrate the Feast of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. We will have Masses for the holy day of obligation this Thursday, December 31, at 5:00 p.m. and Friday, January 1, at 10:00 a.m. What a great way to usher in the new year and give thanks to God for our many bless-ings. May 2016 be filled with daily reminders of God’s abundant mercy and love. Happy New Year!

SCHOOL NEWS

ECC NEWS

Christmas Spirit at Presentation School OLP’s annual Christmas Fair was held on Monday, December 14. The fair is sponsored each year by the school’s PTO and is always a big hit with the children. In advance of the fair, school families donated gently used treasures. Students then had the opportunity to shop at the fair for their family members. Eighth grade student “elves” earned service hours by wrapping all the gifts. It is truly a joy to see the excitement of the children as they choose special gifts for their family members! Thank you to PTO, the 8th grade class, parent volunteers and all who contributed to this special event!

Later that evening, OLP’s 3rd and 4th grade students performed a Christmas Musical titled, “The Case of the Reluctant Innkeeper.” The students were dressed as the Jury of Bethlehem Court. Mr. Benjamin Holiday was accused of breaking Bethlehem Law #982, by not allowing Mary and Joseph stay in the Inn. Judge Jody Justice interviewed sheep from the field and the donkey Mary rode into Bethlehem. After deliberation, the jury’s verdict was “Not Guilty.” With a special guest appearance by Fr. Tom, the students proved that, although Jesus was born in a humble way, he was still our King and came to save us. What a wonderful lesson to remember during this Christmas Season. Great job 3rd and 4th Grade; and special thanks to OLP’s music teacher and program director, Mrs. Amanda Palacios!

OLP ECC staff and teachers would like to thank all of our school and parish fam-ilies for making our preschool one of the best! We all feel very blessed to be able to work at a place where we can express

and teach our faith and be part of a loving and caring community.

Celebrating and Honoring Our School's Teachers!! The Sisters of Charity Excellence in Education Award

Join us in celebrating the 7th year of honoring a teacher at Our Lady of the Presentation School for excellence in Catholic education. Here is a way for you to let a teacher know that they are making a significant

difference in the life of a child.

Why is this program called The Sisters of Charity Award? The Sisters of Charity were instrumental in founding our school in 1939. Members of the Sisters of Charity taught our first students and, with the help of Father F. E. Hagedorn, Pastor, helped create the amazing school we have become today. The Sisters of Charity Award for excellence in Catholic Education bridges the accomplishments of our past and the promise of our future by recognizing outstanding performance by one of our talented teachers. This honor is awarded annually.
