What a trip down memory lane for me – I remember I loved her and thought she was so young and beautiful even though she was dressed in the nun habits of the 60s! There were 69 students in my Kindergarten class so Sr Judith must have been a saint! She had lovely memories of my mum bringing me into class each morning and she talked about my dads involvement in the school too. He went on to be very active in the P&F of the time. Dear Parents, We certainly had a wide variety of popular music showcased last night with our Performing Arts Night Celebrating Music across 120 Years. It was wonderful to see each childs confidence as they danced to the beat and sang with energy and enthusiasm as they relived some of the excitement of the decades between 1898 and 2018. Our Bands and Choir ushered in the concert with their expert playing and beautiful singing. Thanks to Miss Lucia, Miss Pauline and Sr Katherine for all their efforts in bringing these performances together. As always we are most appreciative of parentsassistance and support for nights such as this, with sewing, costumes, makeup, hair and as traffic marshals. At OLOR we have wonderful teachers with a passion for giving children the best educational experiences possible across many areas. I thank the teachers for the work that has gone into our concert this year. Many of them have organised their items, sewed costumes, taught movements and practised routines. Without their commitment none of this would have come together. Nights like this always need someone to be thinking about everything from finding the bestsong representations of an era to teaching the songs, to organising the sound and lighting and the logistics of everything else. Our music teacher Mrs Mason is that person and we are so lucky to have her creativity, attention to detail and organisation across all of this. What a magnificent job she does in bringing these nights together and she is busy right through the night making sure it goes to plan. Photos will be available soon and a DVD of the concert is available for purchase for $20 through Qkr. Mufti Day for Cathedral Carpet Appeal. As you would be aware the cathedral is planning a refurbishment replacing its carpet in the near future. We will hold a mufti day on Friday 30 November with a gold coin donation to the carpet fund. Even though Year 1 is going to a special pantomime performance out of school, mufti attire will still be suitable.

YEAR 3 DADS & KIDS CAMP

In early November, 44 Yr 3 kids and dads headed off for a weekend to the YMCA Yarramundi for an adventure packed 2 days! It was a hot weekend but that didn’t stop us, the pool was a welcome retreat from the heat. Highlights of the weekend were kayaking, giant swing and singing around the campfire whilst eating toasted marshmallows! The camp was well run and has left the kids with memories for life from their first school camp. We would recommend this fantastic weekend away to all upcoming Yr 3 families.

Assessment Day - Pupil Free Day, Wednesday 30 January 2019. Next year we will be continuing with the Empowering Mathematics Understandings (EMU) program. This aims to develop and deepen mathematical understandings as we use data to improve our teaching of Mathematics. All students will take part in the next part of a formal one-on-one Maths Assessment Interview (MAI) that takes about half an hour. We have the opportunity to use our first day of school as an assessment day which will mean that formal classes for Years 1-6 will commence on Thursday 31 January. On Wednesday 30 January, teachers will be working with groups of children throughout the day administering the MAI. We expect to get through about half the students of each class on that day with other students going through the process in the first weeks of school. By having this first day as an assessment day, teachers won’t be out of class as much trying to administer the survey to 25 students, therefore, there will be less disruption in those early days of the year. We understand it will not be convenient for all children to come on this Wednesday at staggered times. We will organise a schedule over the next week, in the same way as we did for parent/teacher interviews and we will be asking for student availability. Maths Kits Over the last few years we have prepared Maths Kits for the students so they can practise maths strategies at home. We have exhausted our supply and need to make some more for our present Kindergarten classes and for Kinder next year. We would love to have some parents help to put these kits together. Perhaps you could spare some time, even an hour, over the next couple of weeks. All students from Year 1 and above have received these kits over the last few years when they were in the younger grades. All equipment will be on the mezzanine level with instructions of what each kit needs to contain. We will be ready to begin collating next Wednesday. Please contact the school office by email to let us know when you might be able to drop in.

God bless you and your family Jacinta Crowe Principal
