Curriculum Learning Tasks - Aim to complete each task over the week

RE - Sacrament of Reconciliation:

We will look at the concept of sin and the importance of saying sorry and forgiveness. The story of the Prodigal Son God is always loving and forgiving and here is a story that Jesus told that shows this. Read the story of the Prodigal son (see below).

Page 4: Our Lady of the Rosary School - Home Learning Class 6, Year 3 · furniture picture nature adventure Talk about what each word means. Tuesday Maths task Try the White Rose Maths activities

This is a picture of the Prodigal Son - Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son (see below).

Talk about what is happening in the picture and what the characters might be thinking. God is full of mercy and compassion. God always loves you but does not like sin. One of the more formal ways of saying sorry to God is through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is sometimes called Confession or Penance. It is in this Sacrament that Christians celebrate God’s love and mercy. It helps them to think about their lives and how they are following Jesus and it gives them the opportunity to make a new start. Read the extract from Church’s Story (see below) outlining what happens in the Sacrament.

Can you put these different stages of the celebration of the Sacrament in order? The priest says the words of forgiveness and absolution. ----------- The priest talks kindly to them and encourages them to do or say something to make up for what they have done wrong. This is called a penance. ----------- The priest welcomes the penitent, and they both make the Sign of the Cross. ----------- The person leaves the priest and prays and thanks God for forgiving them and completes the penance the priest has asked them to do. ----------- The penitent confesses (tells the priest his/her sins). ----------- The person then prays an act of sorrow, which includes the promise to try not to do the same again. ----------- The penitent (person confessing his/her sins), takes time to examine their conscience (life). This means to think about the times they have not followed Jesus’ way of love and kindness.

Geography/ History: Create an information leaflet about Durham Castle. Choose the 5 most interesting facts from below and put them into your own words on your leaflet. You could fold your paper into thirds or, if you want to, make one on the computer in Publisher or Word just like we have done in school. Here are some facts about Durham Castle.

• Durham Castle was built in the 11th century. It is located on a hill overlooking the River Wear in the city of Durham in the north of England.

• The castle was founded by William the Conqueror soon after his victory in the Battle of Hastings. For several centuries, it was the home of the Prince Bishops of Durham.

• Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral were constructed in just 40 years, which was fast for the time. The castle originally housed the bones of St. Cuthbert.

• The castle was given to Durham University in 1832. Today, over 100 students still live there and eat their meals in the castle’s Great Hall.

• During summer, when the students are gone, Durham Castle serves as a hotel.

• The Norman Chapel is the oldest part of the building, and features carvings of animals and a mermaid.

• During World War 2 the chapel was used by the Air Force as an observation post.

• The other chapel in the castle is Tunstall’s Chapel, named after its builder. It has a modern stained glass window, replacing the original one which was smashed by a runaway lawnmower.

• One of the highlights of Durham Castle is the Black Staircase, named because it was made from dark oak wood. It is almost 60 feet high.

• Palace Green is the open area that separates the castle from the Durham Cathedral. Originally it was full of wooden houses.

• The centuries old cathedral still holds daily services, attended by locals and tourists. The cathedral is also home to the Durham Cathedral Choir.

Spelling: Why don’t you try a different way to write out your spellings. Draw lines like the picture shows and write your spellings inside.

Science: Let’s now explore the parts of flower by dissecting a flower (taking it apart into the individual parts) or by making one.

Watch this video showing the parts of the flower: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks1-ks2-ivys-plant-workshop-the-anatomy-of-the-flower/zjmhkmn Choose one of the following activities A or B (or try both A and B): Activity A - Flower dissection – Use the flower picture and cut it up into each of the individual parts of the flower. Once you have done that draw a picture of each of the individual parts in the correct section of the flower dissection chart.

Page 8: Our Lady of the Rosary School - Home Learning Class 6, Year 3 · furniture picture nature adventure Talk about what each word means. Tuesday Maths task Try the White Rose Maths activities

You will see, starting from the left hand side of the diagram (letter B), that the parts are in the order in which they were dissected. This flower has 4 sepals, 4 petals, 6 stamens and 1 stigma, style and an ovary.

This flower has 5 sepals, 5 petals, 10 stamens, a 5-branched stigma, a style and an ovary. Flower dissection chart

Activity B - 3D Flower

See what you can find in your house or outside to help you create a 3D flower showing all the parts of a flower and then label the different parts. You may want to draw the parts, colour them in and stick them to a piece of paper, you could use straws, pipe cleaners, pasta, rice or cardboard – be creative – use what you have at home.

Activity C - Can you work out what these parts of the flower do by completing the matching activity:

Try and do these by yourself but if you need help, use the plant word mat to help you. Paper flower for dissection picture (to cut up instead of real flowers) (Activity A)
