Please join us in prayer this week for :

Seventh Sunday of Easter Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church May 13, 2018

From the Pastor: Fr. Donald Haggerty, a priest of this diocese currently assigned to

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, has a meditation on today’s Gospel that

might help bring you deeper into its prayer about being consecrated

    in the truth:

Without a yearning for truth cultivated and deeply embedded in

our character, we can easily be swept up in current intellectual fashions…. At some point a soul must have, on the contrary, a

profound experience of the sacred, which by its nature is always

an incomplete taste, provoking a desire to know more. This need is

    fundamental for religious faith.

The contemplative life in one sense is an ongoing intensification of this initial encounter with sacredness. The indestructible drawing

power of the sacred, rooted in changeless truth, carries the con-

templative life forward. Intellectual fashion will seem quite unsub-

stantial and flimsy against this far deeper attraction for the soul.

Fr. Haggerty’s reflection is excerpted in this month’s Magnificat magazine and comes from his book The Contemplative Hunger,

from Ignatius Press. The magazine, the book, and Fr. Haggerty’s

latest book on Conversion are all good nourishment if you’re look-

ing for spiritual reading to help enter deeper into the contemplative

    life.

How many times a day do we “zone out” on social media or televi-

sion or other distractions? How can we change from living a series

of lost opportunities for union with God to something more like the

ceaseless prayer we’re called to? Choose carefully from minute to

minute and let your love for the Lord guide you to spend more time

    with Him.

    With love and Prayers,

    Meditation from St. Philip Neri

To strengthen his media!on, Pope Francis recounted an episode of the life of St Philip Neri. “A woman went to confess, and she confessed of having gossiped”. Then “the saint, who was cheerful, good, also gener-ous, told her: ‘Madam, as penance, before I give you absolu!on, go home, pick up a chicken, pluck the chicken, then go through the neighbourhood and sca"er the chicken feathers throughout the neighbourhood, and then come back”. The next day, Francis con!nued, “the lady returned: ‘I did it, Father, will you give me absolu-!on?’”. St Philip Neri responded eloquently: “No, there is something missing, Madam. Go throughout the neighbourhood and pick up all the feathers”, because “this is how gossip is: it sullies the other person”. Indeed, the Pope added, “those who gossip, sully, destroy the reputa!on, destroy the life and o%en without reason, contrary to the truth”. This is why “Jesus prayed for us, for all of us who are here and for our communi!es, for our parishes, for our dioceses: ‘that they may be one’”.

[email protected] 845.825.7281 Guidelines for Reserving Masses

We are happy to share that the guidelines for reserving Mass-es, now in place, have made it possible for many more mem-bers of our parish family to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are meaningful for them. Your understanding and support is sincerely appreciated. In the Chris!an spirit of loving and helping each other, please note the following:

    1. With the agreement of both persons who are reques!ng a Mass, the Mass can be offered for TWO inten!ons. When you come to the rectory to request a Mass you will be asked if you would agree to sharing that Mass with someone else for whom that day is significant. If you do, a note will be made in the Mass book. The Mass is a most powerful prayer and God will bless your kindness, understanding and generosity of spirit.

    2. To make it possible for as many members of our parish family as possible to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are meaningful for them, during the first week the Mass book is open: a) An individual or household may reserve up to three weekend Masses.

    b) For weekday Masses, including Saturday at 9 AM, an indi-vidual or household may reserve up to four Masses for the same individual on the same day of the week at the same me. ( Ex. Up to 4 Masses on Thursdays at 8 am for Joe Smith)

    3. You may call the rectory (359-1230) during business hours to reserve a Mass and then follow up with your dona!on. Please remember, however, that when the Mass book first opens there may be significant wait !me as the secretary a'ends to those in the office. Thank you for your understanding!
