Dear Parishioners, This Sunday (the third Sunday of Advent) is often referred to as Gaudete Sunday from the Latin word for “rejoice”. In the tradition of the church, we are filled with joyful anticipation of the Coming of the Lord. This is why the Advent wreath candle is usually pink. It is a reminder that the Lord is near. Many years ago, my nephew, Kevin, taught in Ethiopia at a Catholic mission school. He shared with me the tradition, in many parts of Africa, of the congregation breaking into applause at the consecration when the priest lifts up the host and again when he lifts up the chalice. We use bells at the consecration, which is wonderful and reverent. However, the notion of applause says something equally beautiful. It is an act of a community at prayer that celebrates a miracle. It says rejoice because Christ is truly with us in the form of bread and wine. What a wonderful truth and one that we should always rejoice in. The Lord is near indeed! This time of the year is normally one of my favorites but I also remember Christmases in my life when they were not filled with joy. There were Christmases in which my family experienced the loss of someone beloved. There was a Christmas about 36 years ago when a serious estrangement had occurred within the family and it was very painful. I now look back with some grati-tude for those years because they remind me of my blessings and make me more compassionate to those families and individuals for which this season brings home a deeper pain or a sense of absence. In the midst of rejoicing, I pray for those for whom this season is challenging and I invite you to do the same. When this season is stripped of all the extras, we still have the presence of Christ and that should be a comfort to all. His love is with us, even in times of struggle. For this, we can have gratitude and say, “Rejoice!” One of the joys that I have as pastor is seeing the many ways people give so generously of themselves. Christ is present in our actions of love. Thank you for all you do for the building up of this community and for your generosity beyond it. Many people in great difficulty will have their burdens lifted because of your generosity to the many organizations we support. On this Gaudete Sunday, I invite each of us to reflect on the blessings that we have received and that we so easily overlook. Rejoice! Finally, I am including a photo of the Mass last week in which Saint Nicholas was explained to our small children. In Christ, Father Mike

OPLATKI CHRISTMAS
WAFERS
Christmas Eve always has occupied a special place for those of
Polish and Eastern European heritage. Probably more than any other set of
customs, the tradition of the Oplatki wafers has continued to
strengthen a sense of religious and national identities. The Oplatki are large
rectangular wafers embossed with figures of the Christ Child or other
nativity scenes. Each member of the family shares a part of their wafer with
those at the dinner table and wishes them a Blessed Christmas and New Year.
Oplatki are available on the table by the
St. Joseph Shrine.
