Welcome...We hope that this hour spent in worship will make a healing, empowering difference in your life. We also hope it will enable you to make a healing, empowering difference in the lives of those about you, as part of your witness to our Lord’s great love. If you are a guest, we are most pleased you have joined us today.

A Note From Fr. Dennis… THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To all parishioners and parish organizations, teachers, staff, Knights of Columbus and all who remembered Father Jim and me with prayers, cards and gifts this Christmas. We will continue to remember you in our prayers and Masses.

THANK YOU! Please join me in also thanking all who contributed to the Solemnity and beauty of our Christmas Services: To Mr. Bob and our choir. Also thanks to all those who helped to decorate the inside and outside of Church. All of you did a wonderful job.

THANK YOU! To all the Ushers/Greeters, Lectors, Commentators, Eucharistic Ministers and Servers who served the Parish this past year. Thanks to our Parish Council, Finance Committee and School Board and all those who head our other committees or otherwise assume the mantle of leadership, which helps to knit our parish family closer together. Thanks to those who work in the background, who are known only to me and sometimes only to God. It is very gratifying when parishioners accept small tasks or big jobs willingly and do them so well. Thanks to all of you for your financial support of our Parish, it is only with your support that we are able to do the work of the Lord. THANK YOU! For your participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal, Jesse Tree, Beyond Sunday and the St. Vincent De Paul. And again, please allow me to say thank you to those who remembered me with a card or gift at Christmas, especially those that left them anonymously. I see your thoughtfulness and generosity as your way of saying thanks for my priesthood. May God Bless Our Parish Family in the year 2019. Year End Giving A special year-end financial gift to the parish may help with your tax situation and certainly helps to support the many activities, organizations and ministries of our parish. Thank you all for supporting the parish with your time, talent, treasure and prayer; all 4 of these types of giving are essential for a parish to exist and thrive. And, honestly, it does take a tremendous amount of money to fund the parish. A year-end donation/financial gift is an excellent way to help Our Lady Queen of Peace parish be the hands, heart, voice and feet of Jesus Christ. Year End Contributions Contribution statements for tax purposes will be ready in late January. Another New Year This week we will celebrate the end of the old year 2018 and the arrival of another new year, 2019. As Catholics, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (which is a Holy Day of Obligation this year) with Mass on Monday, December 31st, at 5pm and on Tuesday, January 1st, at 9am. I want to wish all of you a very blessed and Happy New Year. Merry Christmas,

Dynamic Catholic Alive Happy Feast of the Holy Family! Today the Church encourages us to look to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph for inspira on, guidance, and encouragement in living our family lives. The Holy Family was a model family in which both parents worked hard, helped each other, and took great care of their Child so that He might advance in human knowledge and fulfill the voca on He had been given by God the Father. When we look to the Holy Family, we can see those virtues we can seek to foster as a family, including pa ence, forgiveness, and selflessness. This feast reminds us that parents have a great responsibility for the educa on of their children and are charged with the task of crea ng a home where tenderness, mercy, respect, fidelity, and love must be found. The home is the place where virtue is inculcated and voca ons are nourished. Let us ask for the intercession of the Holy Family to inspire all of our families and to help us nurture Chris an values so that others might see the beauty and goodness of our faith.

Why Do We Have Nativity Scenes at Christmas? Christmas celebrated the Incarnation – when God became one of us. This was a key part of the spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1923, Francis decided to celebrate the Incarnation in a special way that would help people remember the Christ Child and His humble birth. Francis wanted people to see and experience how the Christ Child lay on the hay in a manger with an ox and an ass standing by. On Christmas Eve that year, at the appointed time, Francis’ brothers gathered at a hilltop cave in Greccio, the “new Bethlehem”, along with men, women and children from the area, to reenact the first Christmas. The torches they carried lit up the night as they approached the manger. It was as if once again shepherds were walking in the night to come and adore Him. All were filled with joy over the mystery of the Incarnation and a tradition was begun that has inspired millions since then. As you gaze on your Nativity set, may you remember and celebrate again God’s love for all of creation. To show His abundant love, mercy and forgiveness, Jesus became a person like us. This is what the Nativity scene invites us to ponder.

Stewardship Start With Prayer “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” 1 John 3:1

During this season of giving, let us remember the most important gift we have received – being children of God. As God’s children, it’s important that we express our love for others as well. Tell your spouse, children and other family members and friends that you love them, frequently.

Feast of the Epiphany Cycle C

THEME: Small Beginning with Unimaginable Results. The Feast of the Epiphany is now celebrated on the Second Sunday after Christmas and brings the Christmas Season to a close. The word epiphany means revelation or manifestation. Today we celebrate that, in God’s plan, what was begun with the “yes” of a simple Jewish girl, what took root in an otherwise insignificant family, what fulfilled God’s promises to His Chosen People, is, in fact, the salvation of the whole world. We celebrate small beginnings with unimaginable results; we celebrate the breaking down of barriers that keep people apart.

THE READINGS: FIRST READING: Isaiah 60:1-6 Our first reading comes from the final part of the Book of Isaiah. The original context out of which the oracle grew was the situation of Israel late in the time of the Babylonian Exile and/or early in the time of restoration. In that context, the oracle speaks of hope, hope for re-uniting the people of Israel in their homeland, hope for peace among the nations of the world, hope that Israel will provide light, will be a means of procuring peace and justice. In its final form as Scripture, the Book of Isaiah addresses all believing communities of all time. The book proclaims to us that we have a mission, we are to be a light of God’s revelation for all people, that we are to be a means of establishing a relationship between God and all humanity, a means of establishing peace and love. SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 The second reading is from the Letter to the Ephesians, one of the deutero-Pauline letters. Ephesians broadens the perspective found in the undisputedly Pauline letters that the Church is the body of Christ to claim a universal status for the Church, not merely a local expression. It is the unity of all believers throughout the world that makes up the Body of Christ. This understanding of the Church carries it far beyond an original, Palestinian orientation. In this light, the writer of the Letter to the Ephesians has a commission of God’s grace to impart to the community and that commission involves the universal mission of the whole Church, the world-wide Body of Christ. We are to fulfill the oracle of Isaiah; we are to be a light drawing all people into the embrace of God’s offer of a loving relationship; we are to be a means of building a universal Body of Christ in justice, love and peace.

Page 11: Our Lady Queen of Peaceolqpparish.org/bulletins/12-30-18bulletin.pdf · 2019-01-02 · Mrs. Julie Waggoner YOUTH MINISTER COORDINATOR Ms. Mary Pat Ostlund PARISH COUNCIL Jim England,

GOSPEL READING: Matthew 2:1-12 The Gospel reading is taken from Matthew’s Infancy Narrative. In the narrative, a light for the nations, in the form of a star, draws the wise men from the east, foreigners, to the newly born child. While Herod and the religious leaders of Israel fear the birth of Jesus and do not come to see God’s light, outsiders, Gentiles, respond. It is the response that makes all the difference, not membership in any community or group, but openness to our revealing God. With the message of the angels to the poor, outcast shepherds in Luke, this reading from Matthew makes it clear that the mystery of the Incarnation is all about breaking down the barriers that keep people apart. Today we celebrate God’s light for all people, but in that celebration we also embrace a commission, to be that light, to be a means of God’s presence, to break down barriers of hostility and prejudice, hatred and misunderstanding, ignorance and fear that drive people apart. We are commissioned to build a place where all are welcomed, all needs are met, all people are treated with dignity and equality, all are sons and daughters of a common Father.

FOR REFLECTION: • How has Christ, with the peace and love that this

season offers, made himself evident to me?

• What barriers do I need to break down between myself and others to let the light of Christ shine in my world?

• God's will to save is for all people. How open am I to others as sharing a place with me in God's plan, others of different cultures, faiths, backgrounds?

• It can be easy to see "Church" in my parish community. How do I understand the universal Church? Who makes up this universal Church?

• How can I be a means of spreading Christ's light and truth so that all may see, so that all may be drawn to God's offer of love and salvation?
