Message from the Padre Our Scripture Readings on this Third Sunday of Lent invites us to recog-
nize that people’s personal tragedies, like financial loss, illness, or untimely deaths,
are not God’s own doing, but is part of the mystery of life itself. In our First Read-
ing today, when God revealed Himself to Moses, God immediately acknowledges
the affliction endured by the People of Israel. God said, “I have witnessed the af-
fliction of my people and have heard their cry of complaint, so I know well why
they are suffering.”
My dear friends, God knows the cry of the poor. He is right in their
midst and always on their side to bring them redemption and comfort in life.
Something similar is suggested by Jesus in our Gospel this weekend with the “Parable of the Fig Tree.” This tree produced
no fruit in three years but was given another chance. The gardener convinces the owner to allow him to tend to this tree with
special care in order that it may bear fruit. In this parable, Jesus is not simply teaching us gardening techniques. What he is
trying to say is that God is a loving and forgiving God who has the patience to wait, and continually inviting us to turn to Him
as He offers us His mercy and compassion even to the very end.
My dear brothers and sisters, as we continue our Lenten observance, let us pray for spiritual understanding, so that our
faith will bring us together in a reality that God is a loving and forgiving God, and always manifesting Himself around us even
beyond our understanding. May we see the face of Christ and the Divine Truth beyond all human tragedy, beyond all senseless
violence and death and, that in time, may the power of God’s great love be redeemed in us… as we come closer in the victory
of the cross and the glory of the Resurrection.

We know not what tomorrow may bring. Moses did not ex-
pect to encounter God in the burning bush. Nor did the
eighteen people at Siloam expect to be killed in a terrible
accident. For that matter, neither did the barren fig tree
realize its days were numbered. Lent gives us an opportu-
nity to repent of our sinful actions and renew our commit-
ment to follow the Lord, to ready ourselves for whatever the
future holds.

The Seven Last Words of Jesus:
A Guide to The Cross and Resurrection.
Using the last seven words (statements) of Jesus on the cross,
we will journey with Jesus to explore our own road to the
cross and eventually to eternal life with Jesus. The two night
retreat/mission takes about an hour each night using spiritual
reflection, music and silence to bring us closer to Jesus Christ
during this season of Lent.

Fasting and Abstinence during Lent
Catholics between the ages 18 and 59, are obligated to fast
(only one full meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
When fasting, a person is allowed to eat one full meal or two
smaller meals. From the age of 14, Catholics are also obligated
to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all
Fridays during Lent.

For many people, the process of marriage annulment is very
mysterious, often accompanied by considerable misinforma-
tion. In order to dispel misconceptions, the diocese sponsors
Annulment Information Sessions annually in parishes within

local abortion facility at the Cherry Hill Women’s Center, lo-
