Learner Agency
Children who plan their own goals, set weekly schedules and evaluate their own work build up the frontal cortex and take more control over their lives … Bruce Feiler
Sustained higher achievement is possible when teachers use approaches that enable students to take charge of their own learning. Such approaches do not leave the students ‘to discover’ in an unstructured environment. Rather, they are highly structured in supporting student agency and sustained and thoughtful engagement. Adrienne Alton-Lee (BES 2003)
Learner Agency
A focus for Kohimarama School in 2018 on Learner Agency because the research links this agency with:● Increased motivation and ownership of learning● Increased emotion in learning and therefore engagement● Increased neural development (through active learning)● Greater differentiation● Increased sense of belonging● Increased likelihood to continue in schooling● Increased achievement
Changes to EducationYou will have heard that the National Standards have been removed as a tool for reporting.
We have elected to continue as normal until further information comes from the Ministry of Education.
Strategically we believe that reporting will focus on the progress of learners against the NZ Curriculum(NZC). The NZC is ranked highly by international educationalists as a robust, forward looking curriculum of the 21st century.
SchoolTalkAs the Learning Community we all need to be part of the learning. We are using a learning tool called SchoolTalk to enable this to happen.
SchoolTalk allows students, teachers to plan, learn and reflect in efficient and transparent ways. This is shared in real time with parents.
BYOD
The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy enables the school to continue to explore 21st century learning environments which enhances our striving for excellence in learning.
We continue to purchase a range of devices in classrooms including ipads, chromebooks and desktops. When used within our learning programmes, technology can significantly enhance student engagement, expand the range of learning experiences for students and help students to explore their learning more deeply.
We are looking to expand the opportunities for students to use devices in classrooms within our learning environment. As a result, we have a policy of allowing Year 3-8 students to bring a specific personal device, a Chromebook, to school. This will be optional and we will continue to provide devices for student use throughout the school.
