Bielsko-Biala is one of the biggest cities in Podbeskidzie region. The name of the city comes from the name of the river which is a former border between two districts- Bielsko (western) and Biala (eastern). These two districts were joined in 1951. In fact, most of city residents abbreviate the name to „Bielsko”.The first mention of Bielsko settlement dates from 1312, however, it was probably founded about one hundred years before that date. In the early nineteenth century, Bielsko and Biala were under occupation (Bielsko- Austrian; Biala- Prussian). On the other hand, at that time they were really well developing in weaving industry. The city was well known of its multilaterality- it was settled by Poles, Germans and Jewish- and its religious diversity. In 1939, when the World War II began, the Germans joined Bielsko and Biala with the Third Reich. Polish people were under constant persecution and most of the Bielsko’s Jewish were deported the the extermination camp in Auschwitz. The only benefit of incorporation to Nazi Germany was that Bielsko avoided being destroyed by bombing, that’s why a lot of old buildings survived until today. There are a lot of reasons for living or coming to Bielsko-Biala:- it is settled in beautiful Podbeskidzie region, surrounded by mountains, what gives the opportunity to organise mountain trips throughout the year and to go skiing in winter- the city centre has a unique architecture, dating from XIX century (that’s why it was often called „small Vienna”) which is being gradually renovated- 30km from Bielsko-Biala there is a lake which is a good place for sailing and windusrfing- the standart of living is high comparing to other cities in Poland; also the level of unemployment is really lowand many others...

Monuments in our city

The Polish Theater in Bielsko-Biala's very

city centre, was founded in 1890. It was designed by

viennese architect Emil von Förster in the image of the Vienna

Opera and the National Theatre in

Budapest. In 2008 the Theatre underwent a complete renovation.

Bielsko-Biala Main Railway Station is located in the city center. The building was built in 1890 according to the project of Karol Schulz, in Austrian-style and since the great renovation (2001) it is one of Bielsko's most beautiful monuments. This railway station is classified under B category, which means there are Intercity and Eurocity express trains stopping at Bielsko-Biala.

Films Studio The

AnimatedThe Animated Film Studio was opened in 1947, and moved to Bielsko-Biala in 1948. In the same year

there was the first film “Was this a dream?” (about World War II) created. 1963 was the year when the

most popular polish animated film “Bolek and Lolek” was made. This film has been incredibly popular among children but also adults for 23 years, and

despite shutting down its production in 1986, it is stil well known. Apart from “Bolek i Lolek”, the other

really common film was a story about a dog called „Reksio”. The Studio created over 1000 films, which

won about 250 awards in Poland and abroad. However, nowadays the children often prefer

to watch chinese cartoons rather than see some of these bit elder ones created in The Animated Films

Studio. The memory of ..those polish classic animated films is slowly

vanishing.

So, we must definitely care about it.

One of the Bielsko-Biala’s traditions in are the bike rides. The first took place in autumn 1996. In spite of heavy rain (there was a flood the following day) 300 people were cycled. The journey wasn’t easy but everyone arrived to finishing-line. Since that time twice a year a lot of people take part in bike rides.Unfortunately, recently many people are too busy or too lazy to participate in it. So that we are promote this form of relax because it is a nice and healthy way of spending free time.

Tramways in Bielsko-Biała

Opened in 1895

Unfortunately, during the comunism period in Poland due to underestimating the role of tramways they were withdrawn from use. There were 2 lines functioning, the longest one was almost 5km long and ran from the Main Rail Station to the "Gypsy Wood" (southern public park, common for recreational purpouses).

Tramways in Bielsko-Biała ran in years 1895-1971. They appeared in Bielsko much earlier than in other polish cities (even than in Vienna, Austria).

Closed in 1971
