Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter, the final day of the Octave of Easter, also known
as Divine Mercy Sunday. This day was designated Divine Mercy Sunday by Pope Saint John Paul II
on April 30, 2000, on which day Sister Faustina Kowalska, the Polish religious sister and mystic with
whom the Divine Mercy originated, was beatified.
Sister Faustina had received private revelations from the Lord Jesus, revelations that spoke of his
mercy, and his desire to see knowledge of and devotion to his mercy spread throughout the world.
And so, to help spread this devotion, Sister Faustina had an image painted, an image of the vision
of Jesus as she had experienced him, his right hand raised in blessing, his left pointing to his heart,
from which streams of light, white and red, are radiating. Inscribed under this image is the simple
phrase, “Jesus, I trust in You.” All of this took place in 1930. The first Mass at which this image was
displayed was the Second Sunday of Easter in 1935 at the Gate of the Dawn Chapel, in Vilnius,
Lithuania. Soon after this, Sister Faustina began to write in her diary a prayer to the Divine Mercy,
a prayer that is known today as the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy.
Today, the devotion to the Divine Mercy begun by Sister Faustina has spread throughout the
world, and millions of Catholics pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy every day. While he was still
the Cardinal Archbishop of Krakow, Karol Wojtyla began the cause of Sister Faustina’s
canonization, and as Pope John Paul II, he both beatified and canonized her. Her beatification was
on the Second Sunday of Easter, in the year 2000, and since that day, this octave day of Easter, the
Second Sunday of Easter has also been known as Divine Mercy Sunday. Five years later, on Divine
Mercy Sunday 2005, Saint John Paul the Great left this world to join the Saints in Light.
Perhaps the most difficult thing to do in our life as Christians is to trust in the mercy and
forgiveness of God. Too often, we think we have to earn God’s love by living a perfect life. But this
forgets the amazing fact that God died for us while we were still in our sins. The sacred Paschal
Triduum we celebrated last week, especially the liturgy of the Passion of the Lord, teaches us that
God suffered for sinners, the just one for the unjust, and we must learn to trust in his love,
forgiveness, and mercy. In the Sacrament of Confession, people often say, “I’m frustrated with
myself because I always seem to be confessing the same sins!” But we must know that Jesus is not
frustrated with us, nor is he angry or disappointed with what we perceive as lack of growth in
holiness. It is His grace and guidance that brings every penitent to the confessional. This Divine
Mercy Sunday, let us all resolve to trust in God’s love and mercy; let us learn to say, every day of
our lives, “Jesus I trust in You.”

Queridos amigos en Cristo,
Hoy celebramos el Segundo Domingo de Pascua, el último día de la Octava de Pascua, también
conocido como domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Este día fue designado Domingo de la Divina
Misericordia por el Papa San Juan Pablo II el 30 de abril de 2000, en el que se beatificó la hermana
Faustina Kowalska, la hermana religiosa polaca y mística con quien se originó la Divina
Misericordia.
La hermana Faustina había recibido revelaciones privadas del Señor Jesús, revelaciones que
hablaban de su misericordia y su deseo de ver el conocimiento y la devoción a su misericordia se
extendió por todo el mundo. Y así, para ayudar a difundir esta devoción, la hermana Faustina
tenía una imagen pintada, una imagen de la visión de Jesús como ella lo había experimentado, su
mano derecha levantada dando la bendición, su izquierda señalando a su corazón, de la que
irradian corrientes de luz, blanco y rojo. Inscrita bajo esta imagen encontramos una frase sencilla,
"Jesús, confío en Ti." Todo esto tuvo lugar en 1930. La primera misa en la que se mostró esta
imagen fue el segundo domingo de Pascua de 1935 en la Capilla de la Puerta del Amanecer, en
Vilna, Lituania. Poco después de esto, la hermana Faustina comenzó a escribir en su diario una
oración a la Divina Misericordia, una oración que hoy se conoce como la Chaplet de la Divina
Misericordia.
Hoy, la devoción a la Divina Misericordia iniciada por la hermana Faustina se ha extendido por
todo el mundo, y millones de católicos rezan el Chaplet de la Divina Misericordia todos los días.
Aunque todavía era el cardenal arzobispo de Cracovia, Karol Wojtyla comenzó la causa de la
canonización de la hermana Faustina, y como el Papa Juan Pablo II, él la beatificó y canonizó. Su
beatificación fue el segundo domingo de Pascua, en el año 2000, y desde ese día, este día de
octava de Pascua, el Segundo Domingo de Pascua también ha sido conocido como Domingo de la
Divina Misericordia. Cinco años más tarde, el domingo de la Divina Misericordia de 2005, San Juan
Pablo el Grande dejó este mundo para unirse a los santos en la luz.
Tal vez lo más difícil de hacer en nuestra vida como cristianos es confiar en la misericordia y el
perdón de Dios. Con demasiada frecuencia, creemos que tenemos que ganarnos el amor de Dios
viviendo una vida perfecta. Pero esto olvida el increíble hecho de que Dios murió por nosotros
mientras aún estábamos en nuestros pecados. El sagrado Triduo pascual que celebramos la
semana pasada, especialmente la liturgia de la Pasión del Señor, nos enseña que Dios sufrió por
los pecadores, el justo para los injustos, y debemos aprender a confiar en su amor, perdón y
misericordia. En el Sacramento de la Confesión, la gente a menudo dice: "¡Estoy frustrado
conmigo mismo porque siempre parece estar confesando los mismos pecados!" Pero debemos
saber que Jesús no está frustrado con nosotros, ni está enojado o decepcionado con lo que
percibimos como falta de crecimiento en la santidad. Es Su gracia y guía lo que lleva a todos los
penitentes al confesionario. Este domingo de la Divina Misericordia, debemos todos confiar en el
amor y la misericordia de Dios; aprendamos a decir, todos los días de nuestra vida, "Jesús confío
en Ti."

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El 20 de abril de 1906 los ojos de una imagen de la
Dolorosa comenzaron a parpadear durante un lapso de
15 minutos en el colegio jesuita San Gabriel, en Quito,
Ecuador. En 1995 en Cochabamba, Bolivia, donde una
imagen del Divino rostro lagrimó sangre y después, una
imagen de la Inmaculada hizo lo mismo. En el
transcurso del siglo veinte, muchísimas imágenes de
Cristo, María e incluso, el Espíritu Santo, lloraron
lágrimas de agua, sangre u óleo, emitieron aroma de
rosa o mostraron alguna manifestación paranormal.
La ciencia logró explicar algunos de estos
fenómenos, pero en muchos casos no fue posible.
Normalmente, la jerarquía eclesiástica prefiere no hacer
declaraciones oficiales al respecto, por lo menos, no
antes de mucho escrutinio. El apóstol san Juan
recomienda examinar cada espíritu (1 Juan 4:1-3) y esto
es lo que la Iglesia hace con estas manifestaciones
sobrenaturales. Con investigaciones científicas, sociales
y espirituales se examinan cuidadosamente estas
manifestaciones a fin de asegurar que provienen de
Dios y no del diablo u otros orígenes. En fin, la mejor
prueba de la veracidad de estos fenómenos es la
conversión de los fieles.

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR
ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA
“Tomás exclamo: ‘Tú eres mi Señor y mi Dios.’ Jesús replicó: ‘Crees porque me has
visto. ¡Felices los que no han visto, pero creen!’” (Juan 20:28-29). La aparición de
Jesús y la incredulidad de Tomás tiene una referencia fuerte de fe. Su
incredulidad se convierte en una profunda confesión y convicción de fe. Esta
escena del Evangelio se repite día a día en la Eucaristía cuando convencidos del
amor de Jesús hacia nosotros le decimos desde el fondo de nuestro corazón,
Señor mío y Dios mío. También hoy la Iglesia celebra el Domingo de la Misericordia, a ocho días de la Resurrección del
Señor. Es como si fuera un solo día de celebración.
Pero ¿de dónde viene el celebrar el Domingo de la Misericordia? San Juan Pablo II dio a la Iglesia el decreto Misericors
et miserator el 5 de mayo del año 2000. Así fue como quedo establecido el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia en la
Liturgia de todo el mundo. Ese domingo fue canonizada Santa Faustina por el Papa San Juan Pablo II. Nos dice la
historia que el Papa Juan Pablo II beatificó (1993) y canonizó (2000) a Santa Faustina justamente en el segundo
domingo de Pascua de ambos años. “Y tú, Faustina, don de Dios a nuestro tiempo, don de la tierra de Polonia a toda la
Iglesia, concédenos percibir la profundidad de la misericordia divina, ayúdanos a experimentarla en nuestra vida y a
testimoniarla a nuestros hermanos.” dijo el Papa en la canonización de su compatriota polaca. Jesús resucitado se
manifiesta a nosotros en la Eucaristía de cada domingo. ¿Crees esto?

TIEMPO DE ALEGRÍA
“Acudían asiduamente a escuchar las enseñanzas
de los apóstoles, vivían en comunión fraterna y se
congregaban para orar en común y celebrar la fracción
del pan” (Hechos 2:42). La primera línea de la primera
lectura de hoy marca la pauta al comenzar esta
celebración de Pascua de cincuenta días. Hoy
escuchamos las enseñanzas de tres apóstoles –Lucas,
Pedro y Juan– que nos recuerdan que, aunque no
hayamos visto a Cristo, estamos llenos de alegría al
depositar nuestra creencia en su muerte y resurrección
salvadoras. Cada semana durante el tiempo de Pascua
nos reuniremos como comunidad de fe para hallar
fuerzas y apoyo de nuestro Dios y de los demás. Cada
semana nos reuniremos para fraccionar el pan y dar
gracias en oración, acciones que manifestarán la
mismísima presencia del Cristo resucitado entre
nosotros. Estemos abiertos a los milagros de este
tiempo de alegría.
