Creating a New Mission Statement for Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish
We have a new parish, a new pastor and a new name. Now we need a new Mission Statement that expresses how the Holy Spirit will guide us as we move forward building the Catholic community of Westchester.
On September 21, 2019, 32 dedicated volunteers from Divine Infant Jesus and Divine Providence churches met in Langan Hall at Divine Infant to pray, discern and come to an understanding of ourselves and our purpose as a new parish. From this gathering evolved a process that led to the creation of a new Mission Statement.
The group started by listing the values we hold; our beliefs that are absolute and unchangeable. Our values define our deeper social and spiritual being and form the start of the process of developing a parish Mission Statement. Then we moved to form our Vision. This is a legacy statement that defines the kind of parish we want to leave to the next generation.
The Vision the group envisioned says: The parish of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace will continually serve all people by being good stewards for future generations. We make Christ known by living and teaching our faith.
Now we were ready to craft a Mission Statement that is built on our values and leads us ever closer to our vision. A statement that calls us to action as a people of God.
-Jim Boyd

The Solemnity of Christ the King
On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas ("In the first"). . . to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever.
The kingdom, already present and growing in our midst, engages us at every level of our being and reminds us of the principle of discernment which Pope Paul VI applied to true development: it must be directed to 'all men and the whole man'.
– Pope Francis, Evangelii gaudium, 181
The Kingdom is Holistic Secularism divides our public selves from our private selves. When governments limit the rights of religious ministries, secularists claim that religious freedom is not harmed because we still have freedom of worship, we are free in private but not in public. But the kingdom of God calls us to a whole life of worship and service in the public square. We cannot worship on Sunday and then deny Christ's teaching in the way we run our ministries throughout the week. Nationalism, on the other hand, divides our loyalties. It is good to love one's country, but ultimate loyalty is due only to Christ and his kingdom. Ideologies that ask us to put our nation above Christ and his Church are incompatible with service to the kingdom.
The Kingdom Demands Discipleship We must work every day, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw closer to Jesus. In our own increasingly "post-Christian" society, we cannot be complacent in our spiritual lives. To acknowledge the kingship of Christ means that we should dedicate ourselves to prayer, to building up our families and our parish communities, and to bringing healing to a broken world.
The Kingdom is Humble Jesus inaugurates a kingdom that grows through humble acts of service. Even as her freedom to carry out her ministries is threatened, the Church must patiently continue to serve the poor, educate the young, welcome the migrant, visit the prisoner, heal the sick, bury the dead, and love others.

Please bring a monetary donation and/or non-perishable food items to church Thanksgiving morning. Please DO NOT leave food in the normal containers in the vestibule, but keep it with you in the pew. After the regular Offertory Collection, we will all be invited to bring our gifts of food to the Altar. This beautiful procession will strongly symbolize our willingness to share our gifts with one another, and that the hungry and less fortunate hold an important place in our hearts.
Please join us as we celebrate our first

OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP
Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA
During the medieval period, St. Catherine was one of the most famous saints of the Church. She was a popular subject in renaissance art and many paintings from the period are dedicated to her.
Catherine is still a very popular Catholic name. The spiked wheel is a popular symbol often associated with St. Catherine.
Her feast day is Nov. 25, and she is the patron of a great many professions and causes.
Her patronage includes students, unmarried girls, apologists and many more as well as
many places around the world.
