Welcome
While reading the preceding verses to today’s gospel, I sort of wondered if perhaps Jesus might have been in a bad mood! Our reading today comes right after Jesus’ cleansing the temple and his cursing a fig tree. Matthew’s 21st chapter begins with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the account we heard on Palm Sunday this year, so I suppose that is where His sense of urgency came from. We’ll be hearing from these last chapters through the end of the Church year. Jesus questions the Pharisees’ righteousness. They are convinced that they are good while others are “bad” and have closed
themselves off to spiritual growth. As I think about this gospel in our current situation and in what we as a global community are experiencing, I can’t help but think that we all need to give ourselves a self-righteousness check. Imagine how our world would look if we all listened to each other, and instead of focusing on our own righteousness we focus on becoming more humble. “He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way.” (Ps. 25: 4) What might be the result? A world with more compassion, mercy and unity! Happy Sunday, friends!

The Vincentian Calling St. Dominic St. Vincent de Paul Conference
September 27 is the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The SVdP Society was established in Paris, in 1833, by a group of young men and women who wanted to more fully live their faith by serving the poor. Essential to the foundation of a conference is a focus on the elements of spirituality, friendship and service as inspired by the Society’s founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
Journeying together towards holiness
is central to the calling of a Vincentian. They dedicate time to showing Christ’s love to people experiencing poverty, suffering, and need. They gain the inspiration to do so through their shared spirituality along with a life of prayer and reflection on the Holy Scriptures, devotion to the Eucharist, and by seeking the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Vincentian members of our parish thank you for your continued
financial support during these challenging times. We ask for your
prayers as we work to fulfill our calling to follow Christ through compassionate service to those in need.
To learn more about the National Society of St. Vincent de Paul we encourage you to go online and visit: svdpusa.org.

Is It the Thought That Counts?
I can remember times when I received a gift that I would not have chosen for myself. At those times I certainly thought to myself that “it was the thought that counts.” I was happy that the gift-giver thought of me at all. Then there have been times when my children have not given me a gift and then chose to tell me all about what they were going to give me. They would then follow it up by saying, “it was the thought that really counts.” Really!?! I don’t think so. I could think of sending my wife on a cruise, but that is not in any way the same as going on the cruise. I think there are times when all of us think we are more generous than we are, simply because we were thinking about being generous.
This way of thinking can be dangerous. Jesus teaches us to say what we mean and mean what we say. The intentionality of our actions
is important, but intentionality without action is meaningless. How we act and what we give serves as evidence of our intentions and indicates where our heart truly lies. If we fool ourselves into thinking we are someone we are not, it can become difficult to see the truth. We need to look for the fruit in our lives. We need to make sure our desires and
thoughts are moving us to act. You know that other saying about intentions, don’t you? Don’t pave the road to a place no one wants to end up with your intentions. Instead, let your intentions and actions lead others to another place where Jesus can be found.

Income Tax Benefit of Making Charitable Contributions
Current tax law allows certain IRA owners to make tax free distributions to charity. Here are some key points about this provision:
IRA account holders who were at least age 70½ as of Dec. 31, 2019, or who reach age 72 after this date, are eligible to make a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD.
A QCD is a direct transfer of part or all of your IRA distributions to an eligible charity.
You may exclude the distributed amounts from your income. You can claim this benefit regardless of whether you itemize your deductions. If you do exclude the QCD from your income, you cannot also deduct the amount as a charitable contribution if you itemize.
You can count your QCDs in determining whether you meet the IRA’s required minimum distribution.
As always, please contact your tax advisor with any questions. Thank you for considering St. Dominic Catholic Parish in your annual charitable giving.

The 8th annual Soles for Catholic Education Walk is going virtual! Although Archdiocese of Milwaukee schools won’t be walking together in one location this year, there are two options to show off your Catholic Education pride and join the St. Dominic Soles Walk Team on October 17:
1. Walk in your own neighborhood or any route of your choosing.
2. Walk the “Dominic Dash” 2K course that will be marked and available to you any time between 9:00 AM to 1:00 2PM, in an effort to allow for physical distancing and avoiding crowds. The start/finish line will be on the north side of the school.
Register each walker at catholicschoolswalk.org. Find St. Dominic, click “view,” then click “Register to Walk,” and complete the form. Registration is free!
Please help us reach our $5,000 fundraising goal to keep our school going strong! You can text SOLES51 to 71777, give online via catholicschoolswalk.org, or bring cash or check donations directly to the school office. 100% of all donations will directly benefit students in our school and formation program. Additionally, any money we raise will receive a proportional match from Soles Walk sponsors…so the more we raise, the more money we receive!
Questions? Contact the St. Dominic Team Walk Captain, Nicole Staehler, at 414-588-7839 or [email protected].
Let’s show our community that St. Dominic is stronger than ever and standing together!
