Imaging Services Low Dose CT Scan Detects Lung Cancer We now have Low Dose CT scans for lung cancer screening available at the Imaging Center of Las Cruces, located at 160 N. Roadrunner. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States. This CT scan, for qualified patients who have been referred by their Primary Care provider, is quick and easy and results in a very low dose of radiation exposure. This type of screening has been clinically proven to reduce lung cancer mortality in individuals at high risk for lung cancer.

Memorial Installs 5 New Ultrasound Machines Technology continues to advance at Memorial with the purchase of 5 new ultrasound machines. We are pleased to offer this latest ultrasound upgrade in our Women’s Medical Associates office, in our Cath Lab and at the Memorial HealthPlex. Better technology means better accuracy in diagnosing and treating our patients.

Critical Care Nurses Tennille Gonzales and Jennifer Pieper Now Lead ICU We are delighted to announce that Tennille Gonzales, CCRN, has been named the Director of our Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tennille is highly qualified for this position. She was hired in March of 2010 as Clinical Manager of the ICU. She has done an outstanding job of working on our quality initiatives, the professional development of the ICU staff and much more. Jennifer Pieper, CCRN, will be taking over as Clinic Manager of ICU. These two are great examples of our commitment to promote from within whenever possible. We are very confident that under Tennille’s leadership, and Jennifer’s management, we will remain the finest ICU operation in the region. Congratulations to both!

Memorial Arthritis Center Now Taking Appointments As we announced in last month’s newsletter, Memorial is getting ready to welcome a new Rheumatologist to our medical team. Dr. Dana Trotter is slated to start seeing patients at the end of August at the Memorial Arthritis & Osteoporosis Center which will be located in the Memorial Medical Office Building C on campus, Suite 207. We believe that this will fill a need in the area to treat patients suffering from any of almost 100 forms of arthritis, as well as osteoporosis, gout, lupus and other chronic pain disorders. Appointments can be made by calling 575-532-7430.

Digestive Health Specialists Present to Record Crowd It is clear that a lot of people are struggling with GERD and acid reflux in our community. More than 60 people attended our Heartburn Seminar, presented by Dr. Reinhold and Dr. Macias, to learn about Linx™ and other procedures to treat the causes of chronic heartburn. Memorial has the only Digestive Health Program in southern New Mexico. Our team of physicians and surgeons can address a broad spectrum of digestive health issues from hemorrhoids to obesity and just about anything in between. To find the right physician to help with your problems, call our Digestive Health Patient Navigator at 575-532-4373.

Stretta™ Provides a Non-Surgical Treatment for Acid Reflux Bariatric surgeon, Dr. Frank Felts, offers yet another solution to treat chronic GERD. Stretta therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that significantly reduces GERD symptoms, allowing the majority of patients to eliminate or largely decrease use of antacid medications. Stretta is an outpatient procedure performed in less than 60 minutes, allowing patients to return to normal activities the following day. Stretta doesn‘t require any incisions, stitches or implants. It delivers radio-frequency energy to build up the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus, resulting in better barrier function and less reflux. An appointment to discuss the Stretta procedure can be made by calling 575-556-1849.

$20 Sports Physicals Back by Popular Demand Memorial clinics are once again offering our very popular student sports physicals for only $20. We know that students who are involved in any type of athletic activity are required to have a physical in order to participate, so we want to make it easy for the student and affordable for the parents. This year, $20 Sports Physicals are available at Memorial Family Medicine Center on the Memorial campus, the Family HealthCare Center-Picacho and at Memorial Urgent Care-Sonoma. Walk-ins are available at the Urgent Care Center. Appointments can be made at the Family Medicine Center by calling 575-521-5370 and at Family HealthCare Center-Picacho by calling 575-532-4427.

Memorial is First Hospital in Region to Launch Recycling Program On July 1st, Memorial launched a recycling program that generated 3.2 tons of recyclable material in the first month. Memorial is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – it’s a busy place. We have more than 50 departments, and all of them are engaged, excited and supportive of the recycling effort. We want to be good corporate citizens, and that includes being responsible for taking care of our environment every way we can. Memorial now has 102 bright blue recycling bins throughout the hospital and is recycling plastics, shredded office paper and metal cans in addition to a lot of cardboard. Memorial worked with the South Central Solid Waste Authority (SCSWA) to launch the program and provide in-service training for hospital departments to be sure everyone is clear on “recycling right.” Tarkeysha Burton, SCSWA recycling coordinator, says, “This was the perfect opportunity to work hand in hand with Memorial staff, answer all questions and get everyone onboard as to what is recyclable and what is not, and to be sure all materials going into recycling are clean and dry – no food waste.” Recycling is the right thing to do, and Memorial is proud to set an example for hospitals around the state and beyond.

Hundreds and Hundreds of Backpacks Donated to Area Elementary Students We have a rich tradition of supporting our community. For the past 10 years, Memorial and our employees have donated filled backpacks to Las Cruces Public Schools for students who cannot afford school supplies. This project was started by Engineering employee, and 2016 Mercy Award Winner, Elaine Rosas-Lunas. Thousands of students have started their school year well-prepared due to the generosity of Memorial employees who purchase and fill the backpacks with grade-appropriate supplies. This year, for the first time, Memorial also donated backpacks to 400 elementary students at White Sands Missile Range. We are very proud to live out our High Five Guiding Principles by taking a leadership role in our community through these school donations.

In a Lean environment, we collaborate to increase quality, improve speed, reduce costs and reduce errors. A Lean culture has an ingrained tendency to seek out, identify and drive improvements at all levels of the organization. Everyone is involved. Lean is moving Memorial from a place where projects and improvements are assigned, to an organization where efficiency and effectiveness are simply the way things are done. As healthcare has become more and more consumer-driven, Memorial is committed to being the best we can be for our co-workers, physicians, providers and patients. Our commitment to a Lean environment is taking us there.
