Reflections ˜ Reflexiones GGospel: John 15:9-17

Anyone who happened to be in a selfish mood when they heard this gospel could not get away from it. Love is everywhere in Jesus' conversation with his friends at the Last Supper. He gives them and us his memorable commandment: "Love one another as I love you." It sounds simple. But he reminds us that loving as he does involves a willingness to "lay down one's life for one's friends." During Lent we saw this love of Jesus in action. Now during the Easter season we rejoice that such love is victorious over sin and death. 1.) How many times does Jesus use some form of the word "love" in this gospel reading? Why do you think he repeats it so often? In what ways does Jesus describe how he loves us? 2.) In what small, ordinary ways do you see members of your family, class, or parish "laying down their lives" for others? Consider how they place the needs and desires of others before what they want. Recall how they sacrifice their own time, talents, and material goods to help others.

JEANINE'S STORY

I once saved up all year to attend a workshop. I was standing in the dinner line next to the workshop presenter as she said loudly, "Ah! It's good to be alive!" That set me thinking. For her and for me it is good to be alive. But what about the homeless person sleeping in the park, or the person with cancer and no insurance? What about the family living in a tent in Haiti, the woman in Los Angeles addicted to heroin? What about the hungry children in a Darfur refugee camp? I wish that everyone could have what I do. I am not arrogant enough to propose solutions, but I know I must work for others to have a better life in any way I can, or my gratitude becomes meaningless. If I close the door on my Christianity and my humanity, I become trapped in complacency. Then I am very poor indeed. Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life. May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called “Lady Month,” which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary. Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice. Devoting May to Mary is undoubtedly a better thing to do. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to “love one another as I love you” (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday’s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God’s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer “shows partiality” to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God’s love extends to all people, and so should ours.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
