OUR MOTHER OF MERCY FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The Gospel is from St. John 14:1-12. We may well wonder at the slow-ness of the Apostles in seeing in Christ nothing more than a man—a great man with power from God, yes, but still a mere man. That He was the Messiah, they were convinced, but their idea of the Messiah was wrong. They thought He would free Israel from foreign domination (Lk. 24 21), and set up a new kingdom of God—a prosperous, earthly kingdom with God guaranteeing peace and plenty for all. If He allowed His enemies to put Him to death, all their hopes would be dashed to the ground. Hence, the mention of His impending death at the Last Supper filled them with dismay and despair. But we must not judge them too harshly. Christ had indeed claimed to be God, but His words fell on deaf ears. It was after His resurrection that they began to un-derstand that He had spoken literally—it was only then they believed He was in-deed the Son of God, in human nature. Today, the Incarnation is still a mystery, but it is not the "how" that should trouble us, we know that with God all things are possible. It is rather the "why" that should cause us amazement. Why should God go to that length for our sake-mere creatures, and sinful, ungrateful creatures at that? The infinite goodness and the infinite love of God are the answer, but still an answer which is mysterious to us. For we, with our limited capacity for love, can form no idea of infinite love. God created us "in His own image and likeness" (a very limited likeness, grant-ed) and intended, because of the spiritual
faculties He gave us, which enable us to see and enjoy truth and beauty, to give us a share in His eternal life and glory. To do this, the Incarnation of the second Person of the Holy Trinity was God's plan. There must have been other ways of doing this, but God, we know, chose the best way. Even with our limited intelligence, we ourselves can see what a perfect way this was for proving to us the infinite love, goodness and compassion of our Creator. Sin entered the world of man, as God had foreseen, but notwithstanding this ingratitude on our part, God's Son came in our lowly, human nature and suffered, even though sinless, all the effects of men's sins. He suffered in our name, and because He was God, His sufferings in His human nature made infinite atone-ment for the sins of all mankind. His Incarnation had made us His brothers and' co-heirs to heaven. His death on the cross wiped out, and gave us the means of wiping out, our sins, so that we would be capable of possessing our inheritance. Knowing the story of the Incarnation therefore, we know of the love and kind-ness of God toward us. We need not ask, with Philip, "show us the Father," we have seen Him in His riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! "How unsearcha-ble are His judgments and how inscruta-ble are His ways!" (Rom. 11 :33). "What return can I make to the Lord?" All the mortifications and good works of all the holy men and women that ever lived, or will live, would not be adequate a return to God for the miracle of love He has shown toward us. Yet, He accepts the little acts of love, the little proofs of grati-tude, the willing acceptance of the crosses He sends us, to purify us. All He asks in return is that we try to live our Christian life day after day, ever thanking Him for the gift of Christ and the Christian faith. Excerpted by Fr. Kevin O'Sullivan, O.F.M.

FATHER BART’S CORNER
My sisters and brothers:
For every Christian, for every human be-ing, Mary is the one who first “believed,” and precisely with her faith as Spouse and Mother she wishes to act upon all those who entrust themselves to her as her chil-dren. And it is well known that the more her children persevere and progress in this attitude, the nearer Mary leads them to the “unsearchable riches of Christ”(Eph. 3:8). And to the same degree they recog-nize more and more clearly the dignity of man in all its fullness and the definitive meaning of his vocation, for “Christ…fully reveals man to man himself. [Gaudium et Spes, 22]”
This Marian dimension of Christian life takes on special importance in relation to women and their status. In fact, feminini-ty has a unique relationship with the Mother of the Redeemer, a subject which can be studied in greater depth else-where.* Here I simply wish to note that the figure of Mary of Nazareth sheds light on womanhood as such by the very fact that God, in the sublime event of the In-carnation of his Son, entrusted himself to the ministry, the free and active ministry of a woman. It can thus be said that wom-en, by looking to Mary, find in her the secret of living their femininity with dig-nity and of achieving their own true ad-vancement. In the light of Mary, the Church sees in the face of women the re-flection of a beauty which mirrors the loft-iest sentiments of which the human heart is capable: the self-offering totality of love; the strength that is capable of bearing the greatest sorrows; limitless fidelity and tireless devotion to work; the ability to combine penetrating intuition with words of support and encouragement.
John Paul II Redemptoris Mater,
Wishing all the mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day!
With prayers and love,
Fr. Bart, S..V.D

Our Lady Of Fatima May 13 is the anniversary of the appa-rition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. She appeared six times to Lucia, 9, and her cousins Fran-cisco, 8, and his sister Jacinta, 6, be-tween May 13, 1917 and October 13, 1917.
Fatima’s story began in 1916, when, against the backdrop of the 1st World War which had introduced Europe to the most horrific and powerful forms of warfare yet seen, a year before the Communist revolution would plunge Russia and later Eastern Europe into 6 decades of oppression under militant atheistic governments, a resplendent figure appeared to the three children who were in the field tending the fami-ly sheep. “I am the Angel of Peace,” said the figure, who appeared to them 2 more times that year exhorting them to accept the sufferings that the Lord allowed them to undergo as an act of reparation for the sins which offend Him, and to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners.
Then, on the 13th day of the month of Our Lady, May 1917, an apparition of ‘a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun’ presented itself to the three children saying “Please don’t be afraid of me, I’m not going to harm you.” Lucia asked her where she came from and she responded, “I come from Heaven.” The woman wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand. The woman asked them to pray and devote them-selves to the Holy Trinity and to “say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war.”
She also revealed that the children would suffer, especially from the unbe-lief of their friends and families, and that the two younger children, Francis-co and Jacinta would be taken to Heav-en very soon but Lucia would live longer in order to spread her message and devotion to the Immaculate Heart.
In the last apparition the woman re-vealed her name in response to Lucia’s question: “I am the Lady of the Ro-sary.”
That same day, 70,000 people had turned out to witness the apparition, following a promise by the woman that she would show the people that the apparitions were true. They saw the sun make three circles and move around the sky in an incredible zigzag movement in a manner which left no doubt in their minds about the veracity
of the apparitions. By 1930 the Bishop had approved of the apparitions and they have been approved by the Church as authentic.
The messages Our Lady imparted dur-ing the apparitions to the children con-cerned the violent trials that would afflict the world by means of war, star-vation, and the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father in the twentieth century if the world did not make reparation for sins. She exhorted the Church to pray and offer sacrifices to God in order that peace may come upon the world, and that the trials may be averted.
Our Lady of Fatima revealed three prophetic “secrets,” the first two of which were revealed earlier and refer to the vision of hell and the souls lan-guishing there, the request for an ar-dent devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the prediction of the Second World War, and finally the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism. The third “secret” was not revealed until the year 2000, and referred to the persecu-tions that humanity would undergo in the last century: “The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated'”. The suffering of the popes of the 20th century has been in-terpreted to include the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, which took place on May 13, the 64th anniversary of the apparitions. The Holy Father attributed his escape from certain death to the intervention of Our Lady: “... it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path and in his throes the Pope halted at the threshold of death.”
What is the central meaning of the message of Fatima? Nothing different from what the Church has always taught: it is, as Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict the XVI, has put it, “the exhortation to prayer as the path of “salvation for souls” and, likewise, the summons to penance and conver-sion.” Perhaps the most well known utter-ance of the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima was her confident declaration that “My Immaculate Heart will tri-umph”. Cardinal Ratzinger has inter-preted this utterance as follows: “The Heart open to God, purified by con-templation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, be-cause it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes,
God could become man in our world and remains so for all time. The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continual-ly lets itself be led away from God. But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word. From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: “In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/our-lady-of-fatima-485
