remuneration and rewards just a thought

As far as female executives go,

Sheryl Sandberg is certainly

doing her bit to highlight the

lack of women in senior roles.

Sandberg is the COO of Facebook,

managing Facebook’s sales,

marketing, business development,

human resources, public policy

and communications functions.

She’s also a mother of two, and

juggles the demands of her senior

executive role with her family

commitments.

In 2010, Sandberg presented at

TEDWomen, sharing her personal

experiences and compelling other

women to take on leadership

roles, a concept she describes

as ‘leaning in’. She noted that

many women, in anticipation of

having a family, ‘lean back’ from

the boardroom table, accepting

positions that are below their true

capabilities. In her subsequent

book, ‘Lean In’, Sandberg focuses

on encouraging women to pursue

their ambitions, changing the

conversation from what women

can’t do to what women can do.

And to those who say ‘I bet her

husband doesn’t work’ - he does.

Sandberg is married to David

Goldberg, CEO of SurveyMonkey.

reclaiming time using technology

If only I had more time.........

Why is it that some people always seem to achieve

more in their day, yet they have the same amount of

time as the rest of us?

Here at Myrtec, we’ve been working with our clients

to identify ways that they can save time in their

business. To do this, we look at what repetitive tasks

are being done manually using outdated or time

consuming methods. In most businesses, there is

usually at least one process that can be streamlined

through the use of online technologies. A great starting point is to

look at any forms that you currently fill in manually, such as:

- client information sheets - report templates

- Annual Leave requests - order forms

Using technology such as Google Forms or Sharepoint, these processes can

be completed electronically using custom designed forms that will capture

your information and deliver it in a format that best suits your needs.

of communication and client relations.

Reviewing employee performance is one of the toughest and most

disliked HR challenges faced by businesses.

Many organisations use the end of the financial year to conduct employee

performance and salary reviews. While feedback should be occurring

through the year, this milestone is the ideal time to formalise this feedback

and make a judgement regarding the employee’s overall contribution to the

business.

Here’s a few tips to get you started:

Alison Hough is Myrtec’s Human Resources

Manager and has extensive experience

in both the public and private sectors.

Alison is passionate about adding value by

developing human resources, creating a

culture of continuous learning and building

business partnerships. Case Study

We recently completed a project for a company that performs

building inspections. They were finding that the administrative parts

of the business were holding the company back from expanding and

employing additional sta$.

To streamline the process, Myrtec:

- converted manual forms into electronic forms using Google

Forms. These can now be filled in quickly on a tablet while onsite

- set up a workflow to alert an administrative assistant that an

inspection had been completed and the information submitted.

- developed the functionality for the data collated during the

inspection to be automatically converted into a Word or PDF report in

the same layout as currently being generated manually.

On Friday 16th May, 180 ladies

took to Merewether Golf Course

in the spirit of fun and fundraising.

Coordinated by the fundraising diva

herself, Michelle Faithfull, Divas on

the Green is an annual event to help

raise funds for the Hunter Breast

Cancer Foundation and the Westpac

Helicopter Rescue Service.

This year’s guest speaker, Wayne

Bennett, shared his personal

experiences of life as a professional

sporting coach, public figure and

father. Normally media shy, Bennett

recounted tales from his years as

coach of the Brisbane Broncos

and more recently as coach of the

Newcastle Knights. His insights into

the role of mothers in raising ‘decent

young men’ struck a chord with the

audience and there wasn’t a dry eye

in the house!

The event raised more than $14,000

to be distributed between the two

charities. Myrtec were delighted

to sponsor the event through the

development and ongoing support of

the Divas on the Green website.

“No one is more influential in the upbringing of decent young men than their mothers. “

In the coming months, the team at Myrtec are running a series of

interactive workshops designed to help you keep up-to-date with the

latest technology available to business.

Including o"erings such as cloud based technology,

developing an IT strategy and managing an IT budget,

these workshops are suited to anyone responsible for

overseeing the IT function within a business.

Details of upcoming workshops will be available via our

website, or by contacting the o#ce on 1300 131

Set clear expectations for your employees - they should understand the

behaviours and outcomes that are deemed to be meeting the company’s

benchmarks.

Document, document, document - positive feedback, areas for

improvement and individual results should all be recorded throughout the

year, not just the two weeks prior to the performance or salary review.

Research market rates - a good employee will do their research before

their annual salary review, so you need to have reviewed this information

as well.

Reward high achievers - employees need a reason to stay with your

business. While financial incentives may suit some, others may be more

interested in career development or training opportunities. Tailor a

package to suit the individual employee where possible.
