I have no proof that Margaret Rayfield is our Peter Rayfield's mother but most researchers believe this to be

true. We don't know who she may have married.

Notes for Peter Griggs:

Peter and his brother John Griggs were licensed exhorters of the gospel. He was one of the founders and

largely instrumental in the building of New Hope Church, Anson Co, NC. It was finished within twelve

months. They both preached many times there.

Military: Enlisted in the Confederate cause. Though many a time in danger of shot and shell, Peter Griggs

escaped injury and came home from the battlefield

Obituary: "Mr. Charles Lowery of Buford Township died early this morning of pneumonia. He had been sick

only a few days. Mr. Lowery was 55 years old and one of the township's good citizens, honest and upright in

his dealings. He leaves a wife and several children. The funeral will be conducted ?? evening at Trinity,

where the remains will be laid to rest."

My mother, Mary Elizabeth Lowery Griffin told me she remembers that in 1949 her Aunt Annie Lee Lowery

gave her $50 from the sell of the Lowery property located close to Antioch Church, off Wolf Pond Road. The

land was sold to Carl Crook. She can remember this because she had been in the hospital and the hospital bill

was $50. The money paid her hospital bill.

Annie Lee Lowery lived with her sister Desdnie and her husband George Timmons till Desdnie died.

Then she took turns staying with her two brothers, Jim Lowery and his wife Laura Matilda, and

Charles (Ebb) Lowery and his wife Emmy.

Obituary: "Miss Annie Lee Lowery, 62, died at Ellen Fitzgerald Hospital early Friday morning after a

long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at Alton Presbyterian Church by Rev. J. R. Tackett

and Rev. Q. N. Hunneycutt. Interment was in Alton cemetery. She is survived by a brother, C. E.

Lowery of Monroe. She was a retired teacher in the Union County Schools. Miss Lowery was a

native of Anson County, daughter of the late Charlie Lowery and Martha E. Rayfield." 4/24/1947.

Obituary: "Mrs. Desdnie Lowry Timmons wife of George Timmons, of Lanes Creek Township, died

at her home Saturday, November 9, after a

brief illness and was buried in the family plot

at MT. Moriah Church near her home, on the

following day. While her health had not been

good for some time her condition was not

regarded as serious until very recently so that

her untimely death came as a surprise and

shock to her neighbors and friends. Mrs.

Timmons who before her marriage was Miss

Desdnie Lowry of the Altan section, taught in

the county schools for a number of years as a

teacher, she was capable and self-reliant and

was often re-elected. As a daughter her

devotion to her aged and invalid mother was

touching and beautiful. In some respects was

quite unusual, in that she denied herself for a

number of years, the privilege of having a

home of her own that she might be free to

minister to her mother. Early in her girlhood

she joined the Altan Presbyterian Church;

later moving her membership to the Salem Presbyterian Church near her home in which her husband is

an officer. Having taught in this community for a number of years before her marriage she was well

known and loved by the people before she came as a bride to live among them. In her four-fold

capacity of teacher, wife, Christian neighbor, and friend she has made a lasting impression upon her

community. While loyal to her own church she was not narrow, loving the image of Christ wherever

she saw it. When the end was clearly in sight she said, "I am ready." The reward of a well-spent life.

Only 36 and yet ready. Right in the midst of a very busy life and yet ready. She is survived by her

husband, George Timmons; her sister Miss Annie Lee Lowry, who lived with her; two brothers, James

Lowry and Ebb Lowry, of Buford Township, and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral was

conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. A. McIntyre of Pageland, SC, assisted by Rev. Mr. Little of MT.

Moriah Baptist church and R. J. McIlwaine of Monroe. Knowing her fondness for her own flowers at

home and their excellence and beauty, her neighbors and friends seemed to yie with each other in

making the floral offering most complete and beautiful."

August 18 at 7:14 o'clock p.m. The burial was at Antioch church Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, the service

being conducted by Rev. J. R. Sojourner. Mr. Rayfield was born near Long Pine Church in Anson County,

NC and was about 58 years old. The cause of his death was typhoid fever. He leaves a wife and five

With him at the time was David C. Laney of R4 Monroe, owner of the

truck, and Elvin Max Griffin also of R4 Monroe. Mr. Lowery was an employee of Huntley Tire

Company in Monroe. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at McEwen Chapel here with

burial in the Altan Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was born in Union County on August 15, 1922,

and was a WWII Veteran. He was the son of Mrs. Laura Bruce Lowery and the late James A. Lowery.

Surviving are two brothers, Albert Lowery and Charlie Lowery of Union County; four sisters, Mrs.

Clegg Starnes, Mrs. Carneice Griffin, Mrs. Burdette Parker of Union County, Mrs. Johnny Johnson of

Mecklenburg County; seventeen nieces and nephews. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church."

The following is copied from his army papers: Bobby Bruce Lowery served in the Army from

November 12, 1942 to December 7, 1945. He was stationed at Seymour Johnson Field, NC. He

operated a 16-position switchboard with 800 telephones attached operated them in England and France.

His training involved: Lineman School, 3 months; trained to install and operate telephones, erect

poles, and lay field lines. He was trained to supervise line installation as a foreman. Switchboard

Installation and Repair School for 1 ½ months; trained to install, maintain and repair central office

equipment

I have a copy of his General Power of Attorney, while he was in the service and a copy of his will in

which his mother Laura Matilda Lowery had power of attorney.

Grandma Edith got her first job helping my Great Grandma Starnes with the boarding house where the

teachers stayed. This was the house that Baxter and Addie Starnes lived in. I suppose that is how she met

grandfather. She almost died when mom [Mary Edith] was born. The state had some men working on the

road in front of the house at that time and they told them to stop since the noise was bothering grandmother.

Edith and Clegg moved in with her great grandparents [Baxter and Addie Starnes] when Mom [Mary Edith]

was 9 yrs. old. The boarding house was the house where grandmother [Edith and Clegg] lived until they

died."
