“It’s Friday but Sunday’s Coming’” is the title of a book written by

Tony Campolo that speaks well to our situation. As people of God,

we know what Good Friday looks like: dismal, dank, and death. We

also know what Sunday looks like: empty tomb, folded clothes, and

risen Lord!

Right now, our congregation is experiencing one of its greatest

challenges: mandatory compliance with County zoning laws, which

can/will be done at great cost. The good news is that we had saved

some money in the reserve fund, to be ready for the failure of old

equipment. All $211,000 of that money will be required to complete

this project. We received an offer to buy-out the cell tower lease

from the Gold Canyon tower of $210,000 paid over three years. All

of that money will be required to complete the project. Due to your

generosity over the past several years (thank you!) we carried a

surplus of about $88,000 forward from last year. All of that money

will be required, too.

A few months ago, in order to reduce an accumulated, $100,000 fine

to $1,000, we entered into a revised agreement with Maricopa

County, which required us to be up to 2014 code. This required

compliance will cost significantly more than originally anticipated.

As your elected leaders, we have sought to effectively manage both

the project and the funds to help us reach the other side. The one

thing we have not done, is specifically ask you, all of the people who

are together Our Savior’s Lutheran, for your help. Quite literally,

without you, there is no Our Savior’s Lutheran.

Having exhausted nearly every dollar available while at the same

time seeking to provide the worship, mission, and service you have

come to expect from Our Savior’s Lutheran, we really need your

help.

PRAY – that we might receive the permits and be allowed to

retain some of the good work of the past;

SUPPORT – those on whom this burden has fallen, that they

might have the strength and endurance to see this through,

despite all the obstacles;

GIVE – of your finances, if God has placed you in a position to be

generous. Please designate: Parking Lot Fund.

Secretary’s Report: A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes of the March 2019 Council

minutes with a correction to one spelling error. MC

Pastor’s Reports: Pastor Bill Rindy:

Thank you to the staff for their diligence in getting the Holy Week and Easter bulletins and power point

presentations completed.

Council Action: Mike Kraklow made a motion to have Pastor Bill Rindy begin conversation

with Pastor Nancy Milleville for a seasonal position at OSLC January 2020-April 2020.

Seconded by Susan Drane. MC

Council Action: A motion was made by Richard Falk and seconded by Susy Cavoto to have

Pastor Rindy begin conversations with the seasonal Pastors for the upcoming high season

with a contingency clause of a 30-day out. MC

Council Action: A motion was made by Mike Kraklow and seconded by Richard Falk to appoint

members to attend the Synod Assembly in June. MC

Pastor Tina Mills:

Council Action: A motion to send a thank you card and gift card to Pastor Braaten and

Julie.

There have been several Stephen Ministry requests. Pastor Tina is having a meeting to determine

if there should be another Stephen Ministry Training.

Facilities: Rural and Mesa Fire Departments were in to do an inspection as required by LSS.

Mike Johnson provided us with devotion and opened with a prayer.

New Business – There was no new business

Old Business – The Prayer Shawl group is responsible for soup for lent on April 3rd. Mike Johnson has

placed a container on the table with the Cancer Prayer Tree for mail for the WELCA group.

Pastor and Staff

Pr. Bill – Working on the attendance total for High Season. This should be available by our next

meeting. Staff Transition- Both Kim Burgh and Sonya have resigned. Both positions have

been posted. Multiple profiles have been received for the Business Manager (Kim) but none for

the Communication Coordinator (Sonya). We will probably go to using the projection system

this summer with printed material limited to News For the Pews and Prayers only. Stephanie

has reduced her hours to one half day a week. Karen Howard has stepped in as Bookkeeper

temporarily. Software updates have been completed. The book study has been “delightful”.

Holy Week bulletins have been done. The Council approved the addition of two WIFI Hot Spots

at Gold Canyon. One will be in the Forum Room and one in the Office.

Kim McCracken – A family Event was held at Gold Canyon on March 31st after the 1030

service. The youth participated in the service and a lunch and craft activities were provided

after the service. All those attending had a great time. Palm Sunday supplies are ordered.

The Youth are taking orders for Easter Lilies. She distributed a proposed MOU for the

Fun Van (meets Thursday from 10 to 1130 weekly) and Superstition Foothills Community

Owners Association (SFCOA, meets the third Tuesday from 5 until 8:30pm). Those associated

with these activities should review the MOU and give any comments to Kim. Dinner and a

Movie is scheduled at Gold Canyon in April, The movie will be “What Dreams May Come”. She

is preparing for Campformation. VBS will be June 17-21. VBS Sunday is June 23rd at East

Mesa and June 30th at Gold Canyon.

Ron Rock - brought us up to date on the situation with the parking lot at east Mesa.

Ministry Chair Reports (only those with current activity are shown below)

Discipleship – will meet after May 1st.

Evangelism (Good News) – Mike Johnson reported 2 new couples are interested in membership.

He is still waiting for a response from Ray’s Printing concerning an ad in Superstition Living.

Finance – John Malmberg presented a “Calendar of Major Financial Issues”. It highlighted our

financial position concerning General Fund balances to date and critical dates to review our

position. It also highlighted dates where we may need to reevaluate our financial position

because of county and construction costs for the parking lot at East Mesa.

Missions – The Mission meeting was held today at the same time as the GCCC Meeting. Pr. Tina

stayed at East Mesa to attend this meeting. A man, by the name of Ross, from East Mesa is

interested in some mission work. Janice gave Pr. Bill permission to share her phone numbers.

He may want to participate in some of the NAUMC work.

Property Team – The outdoor clean-up day was held March 30th. Only Leonard and Robert

showed up. They got most of the parking bumpers painted.

Worship – Anita informed us they will meet with Pr. Tina May 1st.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 1 pm.

We adjourned at 2:30 pm with the Lord’s Prayer.

East Mesa Coordinating Committee

April 8, 2019 EM Coordinating Committee (CC) Meeting Write up Time: 7pm –8:20pm

Attending: Pastor Bill, Pastor Tina, Kim McCracken, Cindy Reichert, Linda Gerke, Phyllis Edmond, Richard

Falk, Robin Tomlinson, Ron Rock, Susan Drane, John Weber, and Mike Kraklow

Mike opened with prayer

Mike – Due to people leaving, there are two job openings in the office. The Personnel Committee will be

interviewing four candidates for the Business Manager position this week and the two candidates for the

Communication Coordinator position next week. Information on the role of the Coordinating Committee and

how this committee was defined in the congregation approved constitution was handed out. Any changes to

the constitution must be approved by the congregation. Under Care, it was recommended to remove Cancer

Support, Alzheimer Support, Care Hearts & Hands, and the CD Ministry. These programs are not active

anymore. It was also recommended by Richard Falk to move I-Help from Care to Missions. Family Promise is

a relatively new program so it is not listed in the constitution. Richard recommended this program be placed

under missions. Both I-Help and Family Promise are more in line with Missions than Care. It was recom-

mended that CAAFA and the Shoe Drive be removed. Richard suggested the Shoe Drive program be replaced

with Concordia Charter School. Any changes to the constitution must be approved by the Council

and voted upon/approved by the Congregation; Action Point now or later.

Robin – Family Promise – The next Family Promise event will be Sunday August 18th through Sunday

August 25th.

Linda – I-Help – Maricopa County and East Mesa Fire department officials inspected the Community room

and Kitchen in regards to the I-Help program. It was recommended that another smoke alarm be installed

and a new battery be installed for the exit sign. This will be completed by Dave Reurink. It was recommended

that someone monitor the I-Help ladies during the night in case there is a fire (Fire Watcher). LSS

Management will address this with the fire department officials.

Phyllis – Kitchen – This Wednesday is the last Lenten soup supper. It has been very successful with two

different soups offered. Two large pots and six coffee carafes are needed. This is within the scope of the

kitchen supplies budget and will be purchased.

Ron – A meeting will be held on April 18th to see if a variance will be approved to accept the existing parking

lot lighting, current parking configuration, and to allow no fence along Weir Street.

Mike – Property – The status of the “to do” list is as follows: The ballast has been ordered for the east

entrance entry lights. Dave has submitted to Home Security a bid for new locks throughout the Church. We

are looking at putting plantings along the southern roof line to prevent climbers onto the roof. There are three

options for child-safe curtains for the nursery. Dave will get with Kim McCracken on this.

Kim – Children, Youth and Family & Discipleship – The Dinner, Movie and Discussion for Hidden

Figures went very well; with 36 people attending. The next Dinner, Movie and Discussion will be held at GC

and will be the movie, “What Dreams May Come.” The Filming of the movie “JOHN LIGHT” in the Chapel

went well. The producers of the movie are asking when we’d like to schedule a viewing. Cub Scout Pack 380

Pinewood Derby was held on March 23rd in the Fellowship Hall. Cindy, Phyllis, Caleb and Lana Sparks

worked the concessions. The Cub Scout Families were very appreciative for the concessions. The Lutheran

Social Services of the Southwest Family Resource - Child Abuse Prevention Event-Super Heroes for Stronger

Families was absolutely wonderful. We had a lot of families with younger children present. We had Rural

Metro and Mesa PD on site and children were encouraged to explore the fire truck and police car. Stevenson

Elementary was here as was Department of Economic Security. The Girl Scouts want to reschedule the

Pinewood Derby for Saturday, October 26th which is Trunk or Treat. We are still discussing this. Girl Scouts

donated several cases of cookies to OSLC. They in turn were donated to I-Help and to the food banks.

Katelyn Gosney, one of the Senior Cadettes of Girl Scouts, earned her Gold Award which is the highest award

to be achieved as a Girl Scout. She did her event here at Our Savior’s and was interviewed by news stations

and had a few articles in the local newspapers. Although, Katelyn and her family are not officially members

of Our Savior’s they do consider themselves part of the Our Savior’s family. Palm Strips will be passed out for

Palm Sunday. There have been a few Easter Lilies purchased. There are plans to order a few extra lilies for

anyone who may want one but do not have the money. I will also leave the baskets out next week, just in

case.

East Mesa Coordinating Committee (cont’d.)

Our Next GIFT (Generations in Fellowship Together) Event will be on Family Style Sunday, which is

May 5th; and is also Cinco de Mayo. The Children and Youth will be singing De Colores in worship, col-

lecting noisy offering, reading, serving communion and serving as Acolytes. Following worship, we

will have lunch

together and participate in activities together. The event is Latin themed. If you have visited Latin

America, are crafty with beads, know how to make a Piñata or would like to lead a station, please let

Kim know. The children and youth will be processing in and singing on Palm Sunday. There will be

Sunday school on Palm

Sunday but not on Easter Sunday. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt following the 9am and 10:30

worship

services at East Mesa; and an Easter Egg Hunt following the 10:30 worship Service at Gold Canyon.

On April 28th, children youth and families will be having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to help families

that wish to go to Campfirmation. The Cost of Camp is 325.00 per person. We have a possible 8-12

youth who could attend plus one counselor. Our entertainment will be provided by a Girl Scout Dad

who is a Professional Elvis

Impersonator. He will be performing Gospel music with an opportunity for a few requests. The cost of

the tickets is $30 per person. A limit of 120 tickets will be sold.

The month of May, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day and Graduations/Graduates. In June, we will

celebrate Father’s Day and Vacation Bible School. July is Campformation and the new School year be-

gins.

Children, youth and the family ministry team will be meeting AFTER Resurrection/Easter Sunday to

plan out May through Easter of 2020. The Discipleship Team will resume meeting on Wednesday,

May 1st, 2019. The Great Divorce Book Study will be ending. The Genesis Study could possibly go

through May. On the agenda will be discussing taking a break from Dinner, Movie and Discussion.

Susan - WELCA – All WELCA circles, except one, will not meet again till September. The WELCA

roaster pans will be put out on November 16th & 17th, December 7th & 8th, and December 14th & 15th.

John – Music – The Bells will be played at all Palm Sunday Services. There will be special music at

all three Good Friday Services. The Sunrise Easter Service will be in the Chapel. The Red Mountain

Brass will be playing at the 7:30am, 9:00am and 10:30am Easter Services. The choir robes have ar-

rived and the choir is now wearing them. The organ in the basement that has been sold will be loaded

on a truck going to Denver on Wednesday May 22nd. We have started some wiring on the Chapel or-

gan. Richard Wall and John will be switching places on May 5th.

Richard – Missions –Pastor Nancy crocheted sweaters and they were donated to the Navajo Mission.

A $1000 check was also donated to the Navajo Mission. Two projects we are looking at for the ELCA

God’s Work – Our Hands are creating inspirational cards and picking up trash in the community/

adopt a street. Plans are in the works to serve a Thanksgiving meal at East Mesa. The meal will be

purchased from a

restaurant / grocery store. Tickets for the meal will be $14.00 with a maximum of 50 people.

Mike – Worship –A calendar of event sheet which showed the Lenten Service schedule was handed

out. The Gift Shop will be closing after Mother’s day. After this date, the pink overflow chairs can be

stored in the Gift Shop.

Pastor Bill – There is still money in the Projector fund. A new projector will be installed in Chapel in

the next two weeks. Monies for this project come through designated donations and do not come out of

the general fund.

WELCA NEWS

Our daytime circles have suspended meetings until October; however, Sarah Circle meets the 4th Monday of every month at 6:30 pm in the Conference Room at the East Mesa campus. All women are invited to join us at any time. We will provide a copy of the Bible Study for you if you don't subscribe to the Gather Magazine. On May 27th the lesson is An Intergenerational Devotional by Christa von Zychlin. The theme of the June 24, July 22 and August 26 lessons is For Such a Time as This: Lessons From Esther by Kay Ward. In September, we begin a three-month study, Poetry of the Old Testament by Anna Madsen. I am asking all circle leaders to check the WELCA directories, make any corrections and submit them to me by email or text or in my mailbox at the East Mesa campus by the end of May. Normally, we like to have enough reserves to get us through the summer.

Thankfully, we have not had to make an appeal like this for quite some time. As you can

tell, this is no ordinary time.

As congregations and individuals, we are called to follow Jesus faithfully. What that means

can change daily. We always walk by faith. Having exhausted all the

financial resources at hand, there remain two last sources of hope: 1. The grace of God and

2. The generosity and goodwill of the people of God.

As always has been the case, this congregation will continue to move forward in God’s mis-

sion as it always has: by the grace of God and by the faithful support of the people of God.

It feels like Friday, but the promise of the Gospel is and always will be: Sunday’s

coming! May God bless you as you prayerfully consider your role as part of God’s answer

to prayer.
