The sun

The sun is a star not a planet and it isApproximately 865,000 miles wide

MERCURY

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun But it is still 36,000,000 miles away from

the sun

VENUS

The atmosphere of Venus made up mainly of carbon dioxide.•Its size is slightly smaller than Earth.

•It also features gravity similar to that of Earth.

Our planet Earth

Earth, our home planet, is the only planet in our solar system known to harbor life.

Earth is the third planet from the sun and the fifth largest in the solar system

Planet Mars

Mars, or the 'Red Planet' as it is sometimes known, has a dusty, rocky surface and a thin atmosphere. •Mars experiences violent dust storms

which continually change its surface.

Asteroid Belt

The Asteroid Belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.Asteroids and comets both orbit in this belt.

Jupiter

Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System.

Ancient Astronomers named Jupiter after the king of the Roman Gods.

Uranus

Uranus rotates on its side as it orbits the sun.

Uranus has at least 27 moons.

Neptune

Neptune’s atmosphere is mainly hydrogen and helium.

Winds can reach nearly 1200 miles per hour.

Pluto

Pluto’s moon is almost the same size as Pluto and from the surface of Pluto the sun looks like any

other bright star.

Comets

A comet is a relatively small solar system body that orbits the Sun. When close enough to the Sun they display a

visible coma (a fuzzy outline or atmosphere due to solar radiation) and sometimes a tail.
