Minutes of the February 21, 2015 Meeting @ Cleveland Heights Golf Course

President Joe Hill called the monthly meeting of the Lakeland Chapter SAR to order at 11:37 AM. Acting Chaplain Richard Hagerman gave the invocation. Tom Williamson led the Pledge to Old Glory and Richard Hagerman led the Pledge to the S.A.R.

Minutes of the February 21, 2015 Meeting @ Cleveland Heights Golf Course

President Joe Hill called the monthly meeting of the Lakeland Chapter SAR to order at 11:37 AM. Acting Chaplain Richard Hagerman gave the invocation. Tom Williamson led the Pledge to Old Glory and Rich-ard Hagerman led the Pledge to the S.A.R. Sergeant-At-Arms John Randle welcomed special guests in attendance. Gary Breckenridge and Bill Thompson are prospective members and Tara Tillmannshofer our speaker today.

Acting Chaplain Richard Hagerman returned thanks for the meal. The meeting recessed for lunch.

The minutes of the January 17, 2015 meeting were approved as written. The January Treasurer’s report was accepted as presented.

Compatriot Richard Hagerman gave an update on his wife’s condition. She is better but not home yet. She is temporarily staying with her son. Richard also gave an update on the Chapter Color Guard unit. Compatriot Hagerman had been too busy to get the color guard going but is still committed and would like to encourage members to sign up. The chapter needs a minimum of five members for a color guard. He would like to practice once a week. There was a discussion about the price of uniforms. Richard said his uniform cost him about $300.

Committee Reports – Veteran’s Battalion – The Certificate and the War Service Medal is about to straight-ened out and would be ready at our next meeting. There will be another Veterans Flight to be scheduled around April or May. These will include WWII and Korean Veterans as well as any terminal ill veterans. Tom Williamson reported that two WWII veterans had died in the last few months. One was 96 years old and died on Feb. 18th. Lt. Commander Joseph Langdell died on Feb. 4th, 2015 at age 100 and had been the oldest living survivor. There were only 335 crew members who survived the sinking of the USS Arizona. Eagle Scout – Our candidate did not make at the finals. Essay Contest – We did not receive any applica-tions. ROTC – Two schools so far have replied. We need volunteers to go to the schools and give the awards.

President Joe Hill received a letter from Lt. Colonel Scott LaRonde thanking us for his award. He had also received thanks from the Florida Ladies Auxiliary for the Lakeland Basket for the BOM. The Last Naval Battle event is coming up. Also the chapter wants to receive information about medals that have been re-ceived by our members for our history records. John Dame reported about the Patriotic celebration in Lake Alfred. 2015 is the centennial year. On April 11th will be heritage day. A community celebration at the 1st Assembly of God for Danny McKnight a survivor of Black Hawk Down was scheduled that evening. Tom Williamson introduced the guest speaker Tara Tillmannshofer who spoke on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Tara is the Polk County Social Studies Coordinator for grades 6-12. Tom Williamson presented Tara a Certificate of Appreciation and a Bronze Good Citizenship Medal. Alvie Davidson spoke about genealogy and showed the 2015 Membership Directory for the National Soci-ety of the American Revolution. He also spoke about the 5th Annual RootsTech Conference in Utah. They grew from 3500 in the first year, 7000 the 2nd year, 10,000, then 15,000 and 31,000 this year.
