With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s fitting to thank everyone that has been with us on this journey. Please celebrate with us at our Annual “Viva Las Vegas” Casino Night on Thursday, November 3rd, including a real Vegas style buffet and performance by Andy Corridori! Belmont Village Turtle Creek is the proud home of many courageous men and women who served in the armed forces. We are thankful for our veterans every day and proudly display our resident veterans’ portraits throughout our American Heroes Wall of Honor! As a special token of our appreciation, with Veterans Day around the corner, Belmont is hosting a luncheon to honor our veterans on November 11th at noon. As is VFW tradition, we will be handing out red poppies on Veterans Day. We will also have our young friends at Highland Park Middle School come to interview some lucky residents. This is one of our favorite activities of the year, so you’ll want to be sure and sign up fast! This month also brings Thanksgiving and the beginning of colder weather. Join us for a traditional Thanksgiving meal and be sure to invite your friends and family (just remember to RSVP with the concierge.) Soon enough, we’ll be pulling out the tree and decorating Belmont for the holiday season. We will also be lighting up our community and enjoying the beauty of Arlington Hall lighting in Lee Park. You might want to already start looking for your scarves and mittens! There are so many holidays in so little time, providing ample opportunity to reunite with loved ones. “Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving”. Please keep your family and friends extra close as we approach the holidays, and don’t forget to make room for our new residents!

Focus on FallsMore than one in three people

age 65 years or older fall eachyear. The risk of falling and fallrelated problems rises with age.

According to the NationalInstitute on Health, each yearmore than 1.6 million older U.S.adults visit the emergencydepartment for fall-relatedinjuries. Falls are the number onecause of fractures, hospitaladmissions for trauma, loss ofindependence, and injury deaths. Most often fall-related fracturesare in the person’s hip, pelvis, spine, arm, hand, or ankle. Hipfractures are one of the mostserious types of fall injury. Theyare a leading cause of injury andloss of independence among olderadults. Most adults who cannotreturn to independent living aftersuch injuries had physical ormental disabilities before thefracture, thus resulting in the needfor long-term care.

Risk FactorsRisk factors related to falls can

include, muscle weakness, poorbalance or difficulty walking, fluctuations in blood pressure, slower reflexes, foot problems,

sensory problems, visualdisturbances, confusion (evenshort term memory loss), andtaking four or more medicationsat one time, including over thecounter medications.

Fall Proofing Your HomeThe Director of Resident Care

Services at Belmont Village canprovide a home safety assessmentof your apartment with the goal ofreducing your risk for falls.

Devices to Help Prevent FallsAppropriate use of assistive

There are outof pocket costs associated withmost durable medical equipmentand side rails are not a fallprevention solution.

The Director of Resident CareServices, your physical and oroccupational therapist and yourphysician can work together todevelop a fall prevention plan thatis customized for each resident.
