Over the past several years we have experienced some very difficult events such as mass shootings, terror attacks, and extreme weather. However, there are also many wonderful things that have occurred showing that at least part of our society is moving and looking forward. We have seen NASA make great strides in space exploration, including finding water on Mars and transmitting some amazing new pictures and studies of Mercury that show ice in the polar regions. They also sent Captain Scott Kelly to the International Space Station for 1 year to study the effects of space on one’s body. The reason why Captain Kelly was chosen was because he has a twin brother, who is also an astronaut, who stayed here on Earth so they can compare what happens to their bodies. I can’t wait to see what they find. In 2015 alone we saw some significant changes in the diplomatic world. We reopened the US Embassy in Cuba and travel restrictions were eased. In 1961, the US severed all ties with Cuba following the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US also agreed to a Nuclear Deal with Iran that would have Iran transform their Nuclear Plants into Science Research facilities. It is easy to focus on the negative things that are happening around the world, but if you just take a little time you can see there is good happening all around. We just don’t see the good things on the news very often. The media accentuates the negative and downplays the positive. However, we don’t need the media to see the positive. There are random acts of kindness happening all of the time. We do occasionally hear about someone paying for the Starbucks order of the person behind them in line, or giving toys to the needy at Christmas. There is more good than bad in the world, and we need to remember this.
