There comes a time in the life of every building when the contractors need to be called and changes need to be made. Sometimes those changes are minor, and require what we call “window dressing”. Other times, the changes are more involved and require remodeling efforts. Still, other times those changes are massive in nature, and require a total face lift. At Belmont Village of San Jose, we are just beginning to make some changes to our building this month. By the time this letter is in print, work should have started to refresh the area known as Josephine’s Kitchen. Flooring, window treatments, paint, and new light fixtures will serve to brighten up the space where we all congregate three times a day to share a meal. I am personally looking forward to seeing what colors and textures have been chosen. Another building project in 2015 which I will label as “remodeling,” will be taking place on the fifth floor. The plan is to turn the beauty shop sideways (45 degrees), and to also construct a new room that will run parallel to the new beauty shop. This newly created room will be used for the Circle Of Friends program. The office of the Building Engineer currently located on the fifth floor will be moving to the basement, while the office of the Activity Project Coordinator will move to the fourth floor. Common use computers will also be moving, from the lobby area of the fifth floor down to the lobby area of the fourth floor. Three things I remember about (almost) all building projects: 1) it always takes longer than anticipated; 2) it always costs more than first expected; and 3) when the project is complete, it always looks more beautiful than ever imagined! Please pardon our dust and noise as these building projects are taking place. Stay tuned for future updates as we continue to make improvements to the spaces we call HOME.

DRCS NewsDid you know...

Over 30% of cancer could beprevented by avoiding tobacco, alcohol, maintaining a healthydiet, and physical activity.

October is breast cancer month, but cancer is a disease of aging. Aswe age, the risk of getting certaintypes of cancer, such as breast, prostate, pancreatic, lung, bladderand stomach, increases. Due tothe increase in life expectancy, cancer in older adults is becomingincreasingly common. Accordingto the American Cancer Society,77% of all cancers are diagnosedin persons age 55 and older. Someof the challenges in older adultsfor treatment of cancer are:

• Less tolerance for certaincancer treatments includingcapacity to respond.

• Other medical diagnosis inaddition to the cancer.

• Cognition• Functionality such as the

ability to perform basicactivities of daily living.

• Nutrition.• Social environment (access

to transportation, family, caregivers, home safety, finances, etc.)

Older adults with cancer havespecial needs and require expertcare. Geriatric oncologists providecomprehensive cancer care topatients over 70. To determine themost appropriate treatment planfor patients, Comprehensive

Geriatric Assessment (CGA) hasbeen developed in order to ensurea detailed view of an older adult’soverall condition, focusing onfunctional status and quality oflife. Using the CGA allowsphysicians to create an individualtreatment plan, tailoring care toeach patient. In addition, CGA canhelp your physician emphasizethat advanced age alone shouldnot prevent the use of effectivecancer treatment that mayimprove quality of life.

Fitness CornerPreparing for a fall: The role of

muscular strength andmuscular endurance

Osteoporosis is oftenconsidered a silent disease untilafter a fracture, that might be theresult of a fall. Exercise helpspromote muscular strength andmass along with effectivelyincreasing bone mass and bonestrength. But to increase thestrength and mass of bones, thebones must be put under stress,or used. Thus, ACSM reportedthat muscular strengtheningexercises may serve as “valuablemeasures to prevent, slow – oreven reverse – the loss of bonemass in people withosteoporosis

Recommendations for older, very deconditioned, or frailindividuals starting a resistancetraining program:

• Begin with lower resistancebetween 40-50% of a 1repetition max

• Very light - light intensity.• Repetitions: higher and in

the range of 10-20repetitions/set.

As a result of muscularstrengthening exercises, bonedensity remains high with lessprobability of fractures. So it’simportant to continueperforming strengtheningexercises and beginimplementing power workoutsto prevent falls.

Circle of Friends at Chitactac-Adams Park

Neighborhood & Circleof Friends News

Along with Circle of Friendschocolate-tasting tour thisOctober, here is an interestingarticle about how the Aztecsbelieved the seed to be a gift fromthe God of wisdom. They used thecacao as a form of currency.

Chocolate is not generallyconsidered to be a healthful food. However, chocolate containsnutrients that could be used tomaintain brain health and preventage-related neurodegenerativedisorders such as Alzheimer’sdisease, according to a recentreview paper published in theJournal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Cocoa extracts contain largequantities of micronutrients knownas polyphenols that have been shownto promote healthy brain aging.

Research has suggested thatchocolate and cocoa could reducethe risk of heart disease.

However, some studies havealso shown that cocoa extractconsumption can help reduceage-related cognitive dysfunctionand assist healthy brain aging.

In these studies, cocoapolyphenols were found to helpreduce the production and assistthe clearance of harmful proteinsthat collect in the brain, such asbeta-amyloid and abnormal tauaggregates. In addition, researchshows dietary polyphenols cancross the blood-brain barrier andreach areas in the brain that arecrucial to the development ofAlzheimer’s disease.

In preventing abnormalaccumulation of harmful proteinssuch as beta-amyloid, cocoapolyphenols could help preventthe loss of synapses in the brainand, therefore, help maintainfunctioning connections betweennerve cells. -Medical News Today
