Our Thinking

Lower primary pupils discussed the issues of ‘moral courage’ and ‘self identity’ with the aid of stories like The Shy Ostrich and Frederick.

Upper primary pupils discussed moral dilemmas and thought experiment such as Heinz’s Dilemma and the Ring of Gyges.

Teachers imparted to lower primary pupils skills in asking good questions, as well as values like being non-judgmental towards and tolerant of others’ views.

Our Thinking Week Journey

Pupils engaged in small group discussions and guided class reflections.

The Nan Hua Thinking Week was conceptualized to drive and promote a thinking culture in the school. A week (28 June - 2 July 2010) committed to thinking-related activities and lessons kick-started the school’s desire to breed a thinking culture.

Philosophy for Children LessonsThe school’s NANO (affective) education lessons were replaced

by Philosophy for Children (P4C) lessons.

The usual debate format was tweaked to allow pupils from the audience to cross examine the speakers after each round of speeches. A long queue of pupils waited for their chance to comment on or to question the debaters.

Lecture cum Debate ShowcaseA lecture on debating skills and a debate showcase

were held for the upper primary pupils.

Pupils were introduced to the Great Thinkers and Philosophers of the past via posters put up around the school.

They learnt about the lives and works of Philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Confucius, Kant ; Mathemat ic ians like Newton, Descartes, Archimedes, Hypatia; and Scientists like Marie Curie, Galileo and Albert Einstein.

Outstanding debating teams from Hwa Chong Institution and Raffles Institution were invited to lock horns on the motion – “This House will abolish examinations in Singaporean Primary Schools.”

Our Thinking Week Journey

Week Journey

All classes were scheduled for an hour each to play the different games in the school hall during the week. The game tables were facilitated by parent volunteers who guided the pupils by teaching them how to play the various games and by high-lighting the different learning points or strategies of the games.

Games Galore! The Games Approach to facilitate thinking and learning amongst pupils in a fun and

engaging manner was enshrined in the “Games Galore!” activities.

The games were carefully selected for their potential to teach thinking skills as well as their relevance to the different subject areas like language arts and mathematics.Playing games allowed pupils to learn in a fun and visual/kinesthetic manner which breaks the usual classroom routine. Pupils were fully involved in all the games and yearned for more such future opportunities.

Pupils showcased innovative English Language games they created and designed during recess and engaged visitors in fun and interesting ways.

Language Games Showcase

To encourage a wider exposure to thinking related-games, vendors were invited to set up stalls during recess time to introduce new and interesting thinking-related games to pupils. These games were well received by the pupils.

Destination Imagination 2010Global Finals - USA

“There we were, on the morning of 24 May, in the airport. At 5 am, waiting to board a plane that would take us to the Destination Imagination (DI) Global Finals in USA, Tennessee, Knoxville. We felt very encouraged to see our principal, Mrs Neo, who had turned up at the airport to send us off.”

“When the day of our Instant Challenge arrived, we felt nervous but excited. There was this thing called the ‘TA-DA’, where we needed to perform something after our challenge... The name of the challenge was ‘Field of Fans’. We had to make a simple device to transport some materials to a box that was surrounded by fans. We really gave everyone a surprise when we performed our TA-DA. It was so much fun!”

“Finally, it was time for our Main Challenge. We took a deep breath and ran up to the stage to start our performance. The performance turned out better than expected and we were elated as we had a big burden off our hearts. The judges themselves had also seemed to have enjoyed the performance.”

“This trip was truly very meaningful and enjoyable. We indeed had a lot of fun in America!”

Looking at my friends’ photos that were taken during the learning journey “Innovation Starts With Me”, it dawned upon me that we had loads of fun on that day despite the uncertainty of the day’s events. We were only advised to “bring a small bag”, “dress comfortably and wear comfortable walking shoes”, and to turn up with an open mind. The feeling of fear and uncertainty definitely gripped me when I boarded the bus and headed to our first stop.

We arrived at our first stop at SAFRA Mount Faber’s

Ya Kun Kaya Toast. A mixture of slightly burnt toast, the sweetness of Kaya spreads, saltiness of the butter and the lingering aroma of coffee beans and tea leaves greeted us as we entered the café. We bonded over the toast, coffee and tea and some over half boiled eggs exchanging tidbits of information on how our June holidays had been. We were then introduced to Ya Kun’s Executive Chairman, Mr Adrin Loi. Mr Loi gave us an overview of the company and the changes it had undergone over the years – from their humble beginning at Telok Ayer Street to their present reputable status in the region. After attending this breakfast meeting with Mr Loi, I now have a better

understanding of Ya Kun Kaya Toast, including how the company’s transformation has been made possible through constant innovation and changes.

The feeling of uncertainty had eased but not entirely because I still had no idea where we were heading to next. Looking out of the bus’ windows, the rolling scene of the Central Express Way gave me a rough idea that we were heading somewhere to the north. We did end up in the north and it was a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) academy, Science Arts.

decisions made will perhaps change a certain course but it may be a blessing in disguise. We actually heard that some colleagues did manage to have fun at USS though “mission was aborted”. That taught me that patience and resilience are keys to success. Memories of this learning journey will be etched in my mind for long time to come.

“Innovation Starts With Me”Teachers’ Learning Journey, 23 June 2010

After being ushered into the conference room, we were introduced to the personnel involved in Science Arts. We learnt that, like Ya Kun Kaya Toast, Science Arts has also evolved in many ways over the years through changes and innovations. From a company that catered solely to the Chinese population, some of Science Arts’ products are now Halal-certified and Muslims are also able to consume these TCM products.

Armed with a goody bag from Science Arts, we then headed to our third venue still guessing where it could be. The bus drivers eventually dropped all of us at Resorts World Sentosa. It gave us the idea that we

were going to have an excursion in Sentosa. Lunch at Arches, Sentosa filled our hungry stomachs and a good surprise came just before lunch ended – we were to visit Universal Studios Singapore (USS)! However, there was a sudden downpour and our mission to USS had to be aborted. We reluctantly left Sentosa feeling sad and disappointed though we knew we had an open ticket and could return on a sunny day.

As I reflect and look at the photos, this Learning Journey was a fruitful one. I learnt that change is constant and

Teachers’ Learning Journeys 6-8 September 2010

Activities galore!

What started off as a usual leisurely day turned out to be one of the most memorable fun-filled one for us. The air was filled with peals of laughter and squeals of delight when we accomplished our mission. It really brought out the ‘child-like’ behaviours in us. We also found out that some teachers have real acting talent! There was never an idle moment; it was ‘GO’ the moment we started.

It all started with an ingenious idea by our principal as a learning journey was planned during the September holidays. Everything was wrapped in secrecy – no one knew what was in store for us except for the working committee so there was an air of expectancy when we arrived at the Marine Parade Community Club. A shroud of mystery surrounded us.

I was pleasantly surprised when we were ushered into a big spacious room located at the basement of the community club where we were housed for the next few hours. There, lessons were brought alive through the use of all senses, calling on total participation and involvement from one and all.

We participated in activities like walking to our chosen destinations with eyes closed, looking for our partners based on sound and our sense of direction (eyes still closed) and imitating mirror-like positions – there was never a dull moment! In one heart-popping activity, I partnered the principal!

Acting talent was brought to the fore when different groups were involved in presenting problems, arguing over them and then coming to a resolution later. Endearing

issues close to the heart were acted out, namely “Tattooed Eyebrows”, “Road Rage”, “Queuing“ and “Mooncake Cheating”. We had a roaring good time, breaking into hilarious raucous laughter, lapping up the excitement and enjoying the spontaneous reaction to each acting episode. It ripped our sides!

The big question – why were we introduced to such activities?

NANO, of course!

These activities can be used for our NANO lessons – a deviation from the usual oral communication that we use, thus creating a platform where pupils can showcase their talent and channel their energy to enhance their NANO lessons.

We left the venue, still reeling and senses–tingling from the acting episodes that provided talking topics in the staff rooms days after.

Racial Harmony Day

Overcoming Obstacles, Keeping in Touch – Nan Hua Primary’s predominantly Chinese pupils finally met their pen pals of another ethnicity after communicating via handwritten mails over the past seven months. Through a concerted effort, we can and will be able to strengthen the ethnic fabric that ties us together as one Singapore.

Fried Rice Paradise, the Musical

Bringing People Together – Will this musical be one of the small stepping stones that bring our people together? Indeed, it brought teachers and pupils of Nan Hua Primary one step closer as each pupil was under the care of one teacher.

The show ..taught us about [our] past and the Social Studies concept of change. For example, in the past, there were not many Karaoke shops.

Lee Si Nong 4TAG3

I learnt that we should persevere in whatever we do like the main character, Bee Lian. She tried many times to save her dad’s coffee shop despite many failures.

Ng Shu Hui 4TAG4

A theatre experience – Nan Hua Pupils experienced another form of artistic appreciation other than their usual movie theatre experience. Pupils learnt the basic etiquette of being an appreciative audience in a theatre simply because the atmosphere demands that they behave. The environment does have a strong influence on our behaviour!

One of the greatest birthday parties I’ve ever attended JHaving everyone dressed in red creates a strong sense of belonging and unity. Singapore has come so far together and this is the time to celebrate as one people, one nation and one Singapore!

Mrs Tan Siew Hong (NE Coordinator)

I haven’t had so much fun for a long time! This is the best National Day Parade (NDP) I ever had.

Chan Yongjie 5K (NE Ambassador)

Parents: A Vital Element in our Community – Behind the sumptuous food, games galore and inter-ethnic interactions are our dedicated parents. With their support, teachers and pupils were able to experience Racial Harmony Day and appreciate one another’s role in this community that we have just created together.

“My experience as an assistant National Education coordinator this year has taught me that through interactions amidst adversity, bonds are further strengthened and mutual understandings consolidated. Coupled with a common goal, people put aside their differences to realise their dreams.”

Live Our Dreams, Fly Our Flags!National Day Celebration 2010The Nan Hua Family came together to celebrate Singapore’s 45th birthday on 6 August.

Excitement, ecstasy and the spirit of patriotism filled the air as the school started the first part of the celebration, which included the marching in of our National Flag, the reading of the National Day message by the principal and the singing of national and community songs.

The second part of the joyous celebration saw different levels carrying out their special programmes and activities - Lower Primary Sports (P1 & P2), “Live Our Dreams, Fly Our Flag” Art Competition (P3), and P5 & P6 Singing Competition (with a P4-6 audience).

National Day Celebration 2010

One of the Top-Three puppets – the creation of 3B, Group 6 (with members: Daniel Cheong, Lim Xin Shu, Nicholas Faith Leong, Galbraith Cheng, Junichiro Pay, Courtney Mae Lim and Yik Wan Ting)

Primary 3 Puppet-Making CompetitionAs part of this year’s National Day celebration, the whole primary three level of our school had a puppet-making contest on 6 August.

Personally, I think the most memorable part of the contest was when we made a big mistake while doing the puppet’s pants but everyone stayed calm and figured a way out to rectify it. As a group, things got going only when we stopped doing separate things individually and decided to work together as a team to get things done quickly.

I was quite worried at the beginning because things were not going too smoothly and time was not slowing down

to wait for us. The pressure was even greater when we realized that the other teams were ahead of us. Luckily, we had just enough time after everything was done to add on the finishing touches.

In the end, everyone, including myself, learned a valuable lesson about teamwork and co-operation. And, who knew that our group (Group 6) would get Top Three in the puppet-making contest? I guess our hard work did pay off after all. We were also grateful to the contest judges and art teachers for their efforts and hard work.

On 31st August 2010 morning, Nan Hua pupils streamed into the school in high-spirits, eagerly looking forward to this year’s Teachers’ Day Celebration. With joy and thanksgiving in our hearts, we looked forward to showing our appreciations and love to our mentors, our beacons, our shepherds, our guiding lights – our teachers.

At 11am sharp, the long-awaited celebration began. All the pupils gathered swiftly and quietly in the school hall. The emcees for that day were Auntie Grace from Parents Connect and Wen Yuhang from Class 6J Tag2.

Following the announcement by the emcees on the arrival of the teachers, the Head Prefect, Edmund Loh and the Assistant Head Prefect, Zhang Pei Ting, escorted the teachers through the hall and up onto the stage. Instantly, deafening cheers and claps erupted in the school hall when students saw their teachers walking down the hall.

Mrs Kheng Mui Yee then led all the teachers in the Teacher’s Pledge. After the teachers had recited the Teacher’s Pledge, our principal, Mrs Neo, read out the Teacher’s Day Message and shared with us a story. At the end of the principal’s speech, Pei Ting and Edmund read out the tributes to the teachers in Mandarin and English respectively. We thanked the teachers for all the hard work that they had invested in the pupils.

Next on stage, we saw the first and second place winners from the Solo category of the Singing Competition held during the National Day Celebration performing their winning pieces. First place winner, Tricia Teo of 6D, sang “Take a Bow” and second place winner, Waynie Lee of 5C, sang “我爱芭蕾”. In addition, Jerica Fung of 5D performed a Guzheng solo recital of “雪山春晓”.

Our favourite performance was up next. It was a song and dance item by the first place winner from the Group category of the Singing Competition held during the National Day Celebration. The group comprised Justin

Yeo, Lim Sheng Wei, Chung Ray Ern and LiuTian Yi of 6J. We were treated to their marvelously entertaining performance of Justin Bieber’s famous piece ‘Eenie Meenie’.

Next, the 2010 Prefectorial Board EXCO members, together with Chang Yeng Mun (6G TAG3) and Foo Jun Kit (6K TAG4), recited two beautiful poems in English and Chinese. The poems were about our heartfelt appreciation for the teachers.

After that Justin Yeo and Liu Tian Yi led the whole school in singing the Teachers’ Day Song – ‘You Have Made A Difference’. All the pupils sang their hearts out joyfully

and loudly. The singing was accompanied by waving of the pupils’ many colourful paper hearts and stars with the “Happy Teachers’ Day” message on them. It was a brilliant and heart-warming sight indeed! Much like watching the fireworks display on National Day Celebration!

Last on the celebration list, the monitors of each class presented handmade flowers to their teachers! Edmund presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs Neo.

One observation not to be missed was that the joyous occasion was also graced by loads of ex-Nan Hua pupils flooding in to see their former teachers, gleefully wishing them Happy Teacher’s Day. Compliments flowed and

I think that the celebrations in school were very fun and interesting. All of us enjoyed the class party and the concert put up by the teachers. I liked the class party best because we got to eat in class. I want to thank all the teachers and parent helpers for making this a memorable Children’s Day for all Nan Hua students.

The concert in the hall was very exciting because all the music was very energetic, and the teachers played the songs that most of us know. At the class party, we could watch videos, play and talk with one another. I would like to thank the teachers for all their hard work in giving us such a memorable, exhilarating and wonderful Children’s Day! I hope Children’s Day would come again soon.

Can you guess what our principal and teachers are

dressing up to be? Oh Yeah! We love class snack party!

All I want to be when I grow up is … a lovely Princess!

Don’t we look cool and smart in our police uniform?

We are treated to a super energetic dance performance by these super cool teachers.

The entertaining performance by the cast of “The Journey

West” makes us laugh…

Just look at how these pupils have really dressed up for the “When I grow up, I want to be…” contest. They have absolutely impressed us and the judges!

Our very own ABBA pop group singing the hit single “Super Trouper”.

How we love our very own Nan Hua Band! Encore all the way!

Another dance performance by our teachers… we are just so thrilled by the music and movements.

Reflections by Class 3C

I felt happy about the celebrations in school. My classmates and I enjoyed ourselves. It was very fun. I like the party because I received presents from my teachers and shared food with my best friends.

The coolest performance was the one put up by our male Physical Education teachers. Mr Dylan played the piano, Mr Samuel the drums, Mr Thomas, Mr Aaron and Mr Faisal the guitars... This year’s Children’s Day celebrations were memorable. I am looking forward to next year’s celebrations!

Nan Hua Youth Games (Fitness Month)In line with the inaugural Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore, Nan Hua Primary School held her very own Nan Hua Youth Games during Fitness Month in August. The objective of the three-week event was to encourage pupils to take part in the activities with the Olympic Spirit and Values in mind – Friendship, Excellence and Respect. Each week, different sports and events were held at various venues during recess time for pupils of every level to enjoy.

To make the events more interesting and exciting, there was a special highlight in each week. During the volleyball week, Mdm Ong Chai Sen, Mdm May Lee, Mr Wong Lap Yin, Mr Aaron Aloysious and Mr Faizal demonstrated juggling of the volleyball in a group, much to the delight of the pupils. In the second week, our very own skipping master, Mr Ng Hian Eng, showed the pupils various tricks and moves that can be done with a skipping rope. Both pupils and teachers were in awe at the number of things that can be done with the humble skipping rope! During the final week, Mr Faizal showed his juggling skills

by kicking the soccer ball up in the air with various parts of his body such as his feet, thighs, head, chest and even shoulders! These highlights made the Fitness Month extra special as the pupils realized the hidden talents of our teachers.

When approached for comments, a P5 pupil mentioned that he enjoyed table tennis the most as he was able to play with his friends during almost every recess. He hopes that such activities can be conducted

more often in the future. He even hopes that pupils will be allowed to play table tennis at the indoor sports hall daily! Some pupils would like to see other sports made available, such as badminton, mini-tennis and mini-golf.

Despite facing manpower difficulty to manage the ‘high volume’ of pupils, our PE Department managed to rope in the help of parent volunteers from the ParentConnect group to monitor the pupils. These volunteers even conducted some of the activities! Without their help, all the events would not have been carried out so smoothly and efficiently.

To acknowledge our pupils who had done well in certain events, a ‘Hall of Fame’ can be found at the void deck where the top three pupils for each sport are mentioned by level and gender. This will enhance their sense of achievement and also allow other pupils to recognize the hidden talents of their peers. An online evaluation form has also been conducted to gather valuable feedback from pupils to improve on our next Fitness Month. We hope that this event has sparked an even richer play culture in Nan Hua Primary School.

On 17 August, I went to watch the YOG Track and Field events at Bishan Stadium. When my schoolmates and I reached the stadium, the athletes were preparing themselves for their events. They stretched and prepared their minds. When they ran, they did all their best and strived to be the first.

At the end of an event, the runners would congratulate the winners and made friends with them. From their actions, I learnt the values of friendship and respect.

The athletes also displayed a good example of sportsmanship. Those who had not won would shake hands with the other participants and not behave like bad losers. I also realized that although the athletes might not be born to be very fast, they would put their whole heart and soul into what they were doing and were determined not to be easily distracted.

I had truly learnt a lot about the values of sportsmanship and the YOG. It was a fun and exciting day for me.

I was very happy and excited when I was selected as one of the 16 lucky students to watch the YOG Taekwondo event. Although Taekwondo is not a sport that I am involved in, I wanted to see what the sport is all about in terms of its rules, intensity and atmosphere. It was interesting to know that Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and also the national sport of South Korea.

Upon reaching the venue, we were seated high up in the gallery where the view was quite clear. We were cheering at every good kick or punch that was delivered. I was very honoured to witness our very own Singapore athlete Nurul Safinas Abdul Rahman in action. The 17-year-old from Republic Polytechnic secured a bronze medal for Singapore when she took down Kaburee Ioane of Kiribati 9-0 in the quarter-finals.

At the end of the day, I went back to school with a smile on my face, feeling satisfied with and enriched by my experience, but sad too as I wanted to witness more action. Each of us received a beautiful limited edition of YOG EZ-link card that can be kept as a souvenir or even used for daily travel. It is fantastic! I hope when I grow up, I can take part in the Youth Olympic Games.
