Headmaster and directive team

elections

Appointment of headmasters is decided by local school authorities every four years.Assistant directors are elected by the teachers of each school every two years.

Pupils with any special attentions

There are a few special schools. But there are special classes in regular schools where special teachers teach one-two children Greek and Maths. Then pupils go back and integrate with the rest of their classmates for the other subjects.(autism, moderate learning difficulties, dyslexia e.t.c.)

Participation of teachers and parents or any other

institutions at school organization

Ministry of education make the most important decisions on school programme and organization. Town authorities are responsible for re/construction of school buildings, repairs… Parents suggest what they think is necessary for the school and their children.

Extra activities out of school with children

Environmental, Health, Art, e-twinning, Comenius Projects, visits to different places of interest, educational daily trips nearby

Money for school and materials

Education is free, so there are no fees or money for books in public schools, only in private ones. Schools are funded by the Ministry of Education.

Parents´ economical helps to school

Only minor participation like buying presents and sweets for school parties or paying for their children’s school outings by bus and tickets for theatrical performances.

Teachers : how to get a work at school

After 4 years of University studies they take exams. They then serve for 2 years as a trial period, attend introductory afternoon seminars (in-service training)…

Page 6: Our town:Preveza

Qualifications : evaluation and

progress of children

Report cards 3 times a year. Revision tests (sent by the Ministry of Education) throughout the year after every chapter/unit for all subjects.

School evaluation advisors

There are school advisors who supervise teachers’ work at schools, organise seminars, visit schools to discuss particular problems that may arise especially if parents request it or if there are problems with new books or teaching methods.

Teachers’ evaluation : advisors

The school advisors together with the headmasters of every school are responsible for teachers’ evaluation. Nevertheless, this system is heavily opposed by teachers’ unions ever since it was voted, so it is not implemented yet.

Salaries and internal promotion for

teachers

Salaries are very low in comparison with the rest of the public sector, sometimes cleaners of the ministry buildings are paid more!!! For example a teacher, with 11 years in service, who is married with 1 child gets 1350 Euros.

Coordination between teachers

There are weekly teachers’ meetings within a school as well as regular meetings in advisors’ seminars.

Resources for school Schools are funded by the Ministry of Education and money is distributed by local Town Councils, where teacher representatives are present to give their opinion.

School projects

And teachers participation,

Courses for teachers

There are special health, environment, art, or Comenius projects that hardworking teachers can take part in. However, most teachers are not willing to start such projects since it means loads of work without any extra payment. There is a 2-year in service training for teachers in the pedagogical departments of the universities after sitting for exams in Literature, Pedagogic Psychology and Teaching methods and approaches .
