From The Principal’s Desk

Teaching is a vocation where you can make a huge difference in student’s lives and it was my pleasue to attend the Central Coast World Teachers Day function where Michelle Timperley and Stephen McLean were presented with awards on behalf of our school for their outstanding contribution.

Term 4 brings lots of change at The Entrance Campus and it was indeed an honour to farewell Year 12 last week from our College. Students were ex-tremely well behaved during the exam period and looked amazing at their formal. Congratulations! Year 11 have commenced Year 12 courses. Students have had a Learning Conference “Your Journey, Your success” to set them up with structures and supports throughout Year 12. All Year 12 2019 students are encouraged to start fresh, use the assessment book to help plan and ensure they attend school all days. Year 10-11 Transition has been in full swing and I am very impressed with all the students who have engaged in transition activities to date. Further information on the first week back in

2019 will be sent to parents before the end of term. Remember the last day for students is Wednesday 19 December.

DEPUTY’S REPORT—YEAR 11

Congratulations Year 12 (2018) for completing your HSC! A wonderful celebration was had at the Year 12 Formal on Tuesday 13 November. Please visit our FB page for photos. Thank you to the Year 12 Year Advisors Mrs McIntosh, Mr Cotterill and Mr Deaves for organsing a fantastic night. Thank you to the parents, carers and students who attended the ‘Survive the HSC’ information evening on Wednesday 7 November. If you were unable to attend, information can be found on the TEC website; Click on ‘Assessment’ and then on the ‘Year 12’ tab. The key messages to our current Year 12 group are; Recommended 3 hours of study per course per week. Students should have a planned study routine by now. Students are encouraged to submit drafts for feedback prior to assessment task submission date Attend our Tuesday afternoon drop in sessions (12.30-2.00pm) where students can get one on one help from staff, past students and University tutors. Be organised ASK FOR HELP A reminder that Year 11 final reports have been uploaded to the parent portal. If you would like a hard copy you can request one by calling the school office on 43322944. Thank you for your support as we try to reduce our carbon footprint. Congratulations to all students who received an award at the Year 11 final academic assembly. One of my favourite things to do as a Deputy Principal is to shake the hands of deserving award winners. The number of 100% attendance awards was pleasing. Special mention to Larni Moloney who was awarded Year 11 Dux. The much anticipated wellbeing excursion of the year, the MUD RUN is on Monday 3 December. All Year 12 students are encouraged to come along. It will be a wonderful day where students and teachers come together for lots of fun and adventure, but most importantly to support each other and build stronger relationships. I CANT WAIT! Attendance, attendance, attendance. I am concerned with the amount of students that arrive late, leave early or do not explain whole day absences. All absences require a note from a parent or carer explaining the reason as to why a student was not in school. All parents and carers have access to the ‘Parent Portal’ and I encourage you to check your child’s attendance pattern every week. If you require assistance with accessing the Parent Portal please contact the front office. With over 200 Year 12 students doing a major work, it is vital that students remain on track with the expected targets. Please refer to the Year 12 assessment booklet for expectations surrounding a major work. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher should you have any questions or concerns. With only a few weeks to go I encourage students to keep working hard right up until the last day of school. Our current Year 12 group have got off to a great start. I look forward to supporting your child over the next 12 months to help them achieve success in their chosen pathway. Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas break. Year 12 return Thursday 31 January 2019!

Congratulations to Year Twelve on completing your first term of your HSC courses. Admittedly, it has been quite a hectic period - particularly with the transition from Year 11 - but we have seen you achieve so much of which we are extremely proud.

Notable events have included the Halogen National Young Leaders' Day at The International Conference Centre in Darling Harbour, the Youth Leadership Forum at Woy Woy League's Club, the Raw Challenge (a.k.a. Mud Run), White Ribbon Day which included the sale of ribbons and wristbands, as well as the design of a mural near the Cafeteria to promote awareness in the abolition of domestic violence, the Movember Walk Off and The Principal's Breakfast.

Students have been issued with their school jackets and we all agree that they look amazing. We look forward to seeing you wear them around the campus.

All students have also attempted their first HSC Assessment Task and we hope that this experience has put you in the right stead for future tasks.

We wish you and your families a safe and relaxing Christmas break. Try to incorporate some study throughout the holidays as it will definitely assist in your preparation for next year.

See you Term 1, 2019!

Ellen Van Dam, Glenn Watson and Debra Weeks.

GRADUATING YR 12 2018 ADVISORS’ REPORT

Rob Cotterill Brett Deaves Margaret McIntosh

Well Year 12, this is it. The final newsletter item ever. It comes with a heavy heart writing this, thinking about all the memories people have shared over the past 2 years. You really have impressed us with your dedication, charm and unity as a year group

I would like to congratulate you on what was an amazing formal evening. Everyone embraced the evening well and you all looked amazing on the night. Most of you were barely recognisable as you all looked like true young adults.

Information regarding how to download photos of the evening will be communicated soon to students via google classroom, facebook and the school website. Keep an eye out for the notification.

There still is a lot of references that are yet to be collected by students. This is a really valuable document when seeking employment and it would be a shame to waste. References are available for collection until the end of the year from the front office.

Year books are still available for sale for $15, from the front office. There are also some paid year books that haven’t been collected.

Also note, the school accepts uniform donations for our clothing pool. Any unwanted shirts, jumpers and pants can be donated to the front office.

There are still students who need to complete their sign out cards, pay fees and return textbooks. Returning textbooks in English is particularly important, as the current year 12 are waiting for them.

Last but not least, there is a one more chance for teachers and students to catch up. The ATAR BBQ is on Friday the 14th of December at 9 - 10.30 am. Join us for a bacon and egg roll and share with your teachers your amazing HSC results. We can’t wait to hear about your success.

We leave you with one final thought,

Good luck Year 12, Be brave and make the world a better place then when you arrived.

TAS HAPPENINGS

The Year 12 HSC Course has begun, and Christmas is fast approaching. This term has seen the commencement of Year 12 Courses for the 2019 cohort across the TAS Faculty. Our 2018 HSC students are eagerly awaiting their HSC results. Results from Major Project Work Courses across the TAS Faculty are also a source of much anticipation. Special mention goes to Kaleb Baxter who has been nominated for possible inclusion in InTech, the annual exhibition of outstanding Major Projects developed by HSC Industrial Technology students. Without doubt, candidates who attempt courses with practical components MUST start work early, get organised and keep to time plans. These projects can’t be done the night before and require a serious long term commitment from the student, from the start of the course. Work sessions are available every Tuesday from 12:30 to 2pm for these students who have a major works project component. On that note, any students enrolled in TAS courses with Major Project Work components should be well underway with their works, if they are to achieve results of which they will be proud. Whilst most work is completed at school, parents should have seen some aspects of the project or associated folio being completed at home. Practical materials like wood and textile fabrics should have been purchased by this stage of the course. MPW students have the opportunity to attend Consolidation Day in Week 9 of this term. This day provides an excellent opportunity for students to spend uninterrupted time working with their teachers and peers solely on their practical works. Special thanks goes to the TAS teaching staff who consistently give of their time and expertise to help all students achieve. Thanks also goes to the many parents, grandparents and invited guests who have attended our TAS Showcase and Textiles High Tea. Without working together, we would not be able to achieve the results that we do. It is appreciated!! TAS Hospitality students have been involved in numerous practical catering experiences. These are great opportunities for students to experience first-hand work in this industry. Events have included catering for staff wellbeing morning teas, Principal’s Breakfasts, transition day workshops and the Long Jetty Senior Citizens luncheon. Some TAS courses will be going out on their HSC mandatory Work Placement during the first half of next year. Parents will be required to complete necessary paperwork prior to the placement. Please ensure that forms are completed with the required information, and if there are any concerns please contact the teacher.

TAS HAPPENINGS

On staff matters, the TAS Faculty will be saying farewell to Mr Ben Howard who has been an integral member of TAS for a number of years. In that time he has made great inroads, particularly in the area of Hospitality. His efforts with catering events such as the Principal’s Breakfast will be missed, as will his many Construction projects around the school. He is wished all the best as he begins his next adventure….a school much closer to home. This term has been a busy one and the holiday will be well deserved. Whilst a break is essential, there is also need to keep up the momentum over the break. The foundations for a profitable Year 12 are being established and students need to view this as a time to get things in place for the even busi-er year we will have in 2019. As always, if you have any issues you would like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or myself - Ms M.Lawless HT TAS. On behalf of the TAS Staff, best wishes for Christmas and the New Year!! ‘Til next time.

SUPPORT CLASS

One of our Support Classes has recently participated in a collaborative art project with a group of students from Tennessee. The purpose of the project is to celebrate Indigenous cultures, specifically Native Americans and Aboriginal peoples from Australia. The students from TLSC - The Entrance used ochre; a traditional paint made from grounded rock that has been used for tens of thousands of years by Aboriginal people. They used the white ochre to form white hand prints on black card, white is the colour traditionally used in Aboriginal culture to signify youths. Students then chose Aboriginal symbols that were meaningful to them and added them to their handprint. They will be making similar artworks in Tennessee and adding them all together to make one large collaborative artwork. We are eagerly awaiting photos of the final product.

YEAR 10 ABORIGINAL TRANSITION DAY

Last week we had our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aboriginal Transition Day that took students out on Country to learn new knowledge, connect and reflect on the next part of their journey.

After taking time to connect students headed back to The Entrance Campus for lunch catered by our hospitality students and a campus tour led by our Senior Aboriginal students giving insight and perspectives on balancing culture, academics and a new learning environment. Such a Deadly day!

HIGH ACHIEVERS @ TEC Thursday the 22nd November saw about 40 students from our top 10% academic achievers attend a “Learning Conference” at school in our ITC. Students were invited to attend based on their academic achievements to date and teacher nomination. It was encouraging to witness such a good attendance. Whilst this is a very busy time of the year for our students, opportunities like these are viewed as highly valuable. They allow like-minded students to meet in an environment conducive to finding out about matters significant to their particular needs. We thank parents and carers for their support of programs like this. We would also like to thank the guest speakers, many of whom were past students of TEC, for their time and the advice they provided to our current students. Ms Lawless High Achievers @ TEC

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

As part of the Graphics 2 Module, the Year 12 Computer Applications class has been using the Adobe Software Suite. They have created and traced images in Adobe Illustrator, some of which we have printed using the Laser Cutter. The capabilities of the Laser Cutter can be seen in the student's design; featuring etching/engraving and high cutting accuracy (0.5 mm).

This task has enabled the students to explore their creativity and has given them an opportunity to master advanced features of an industry relevant software. We will be looking at other graphical 'printing' methods as the students create other pieces using the Adobe software.

Year 12 Construction Excursion to WesTrac @ Tomago 21 November 2018.

Mr Howard and Mrs Giles joined the Construction boys visiting WesTrac on Wednesday 21 November. The students who attended this excursion were excellent ambassadors for TLSC – The Entrance Campus. The students were given a tour around the big WesTrac facility at Tomago as well as admiring some of the magnificent and huge machinery. A demonstration of one of these huge machines by remote control was a highlight of the day. A big Thank you to Mr Howard is in order for arranging these opportunities and also to Mrs Giles for her support too. Thank you!

Talk in the library on Tuesday 20 November 2018. On Tuesday Kevin Rigg from Robson Civil Projects with the Civil Contractors Federation NSW School Visit Program gave a talk at school to Mr Howards Construction students in the back of the library. From their website : Are you at school? There are a whole lot of jobs in this industry that are available to people straight out of school. HSC is not essential. Particular subjects are not essential. Particular grades are not essential. You can start in the industry with no formal qualifications as a Site Hand, or as a Graduate Engineer. You can do an Apprenticeship, a Traineeship, or you can just take a job and see where it takes you.

SPORT REPORT TERM 4 2018

Congratulations to Nick Hay who played in the Open Boys Sydney North Cricket Team earlier this term in Armidale. Over the tournament Nick’s team knocked out North Coast, Northwest and Riverina regions, but went down to Sydney East in the final. Nick top scored with the bat in the final too! Well done Nick! Dixie Butler has been named in AFL Girls Athlete of the Year by the Central Coast Academy of Sport. Dixie was chosen to be their standout athlete and has the potential to be drafted into the AFLW over the coming years. Congratulations Dixie we look forward to seeing what the future holds! Taine Peterson and Corey-Jay Eyndhoven are set to soar at the Australian All Schools Athletics in Cairns early December. Taine finished 2nd in the 100m final at NSW All Schools and CJ won the Shot Put. These are outstanding achievements and both should be extremely proud. The boys are travelling up with the team prior to the event and have been training hard as usual. We look forward to seeing how they go. Best of luck guys!!

Pelicans Touch In Week 6 TEC students were invited to the Margaret Merritts Cup and acknowledged Indigenous and Non Indigenous students playing together. The students had a fantastic day out and enjoyed the hospitality from Indigenous elders Matt Sonter and Lesley Armstrong. They won their pool, however, were given a free lesson by the younger and more agile touch players from BVC who won the day. Thanks to all that were involved!

TAS SPOTLIGHT

Kaleb showed the consistent commitment required of a senior student when it came to Major Project Work. He was well organised, methodical in his approach and willing to put in the time needed to complete a quality project. Kaleb could often be found in H Block during his study period and on a Tuesday afternoon as he recognised the need to add the detail and precision required at this level. He was rewarded with a nomination for possible inclusion in InTech, the annual exhibition of outstanding Major Projects developed by HSC Industrial Technology students.

Kaleb is by all accounts a worthy inclusion in this select group. Best wishes for the future Kaleb.
