DIVINE PRESENCE AND HUMAN CO-OPERATION

Dearly beloved, But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out Egypt?” He said, “But I will be with you.”

(Exodus 3:11-12) The life and ministry of Moses inspire and challenge us in many ways. Moses’ life is a journey from a Hebrew slave boy to a great liberator of the people of Israel. God trained and equipped him for the liberative ministry. First forty years of his life was in the Palace as the son of Princess of Pharaoh. Egypt had a highly developed civilization and their knowledge in the fields of engineering, Mathematics, construction and the art of embalming could be seen even today. “And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of Egyptians and he was mighty in his words and deeds” (Acts 9:22). As the adopted son of the princess, Moses could have an easy life in the palace. But his faith refused that kind of life. He was disturbed by the injustice of the Egyptians and the sufferings of his own people. True faith causes a believer to hold right values and make right decisions. So, he intervened on behalf of the victims. Seeing the conflict between an Egyptian and a Hebrew, He made courageous decision refusing “the Pleasures and treasures of the Egypt and chose to identify with his own people”. But when he tried to reconcile the two Hebrews, they rejected him. Moses was a compassionate man who was sincere in his motives but rash in his actions. So, God took him to Midian and made him a shepherd there for forty years. The man who was in the royal court is now in the lonely pastures taking care of stubborn sheep. It was the preparation needed for him to lead a nation of stubborn people. The forty years of waiting and working in the wilderness molded him to be a true servant of God. Later he would be called “the meekest man on the earth” (Numbers 12: 2). Waiting periods are essential in our lives also. It is God’s time for equipping us to His plan for our lives. insignificant bush into a miracle by igniting it. He wanted to do the same with Moses also. Even though he was weak, God chose him. God’s conversation with Moses contains a sharing of God’s plan and passion for the enslaved community. It was their cry that moved God to act on behalf of them. God’s self-announcement to Moses echoes God’s response to their cry. Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, I know their sufferings and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them out of that land to a good and broad land... Come I will send you to Pharaoh…” (Exodus 3:7-10). It was a call to return to the dangerous and conflictual land of Egypt as the voice of God and to risk his life for the people who were suffering. Moses tried to escape the divine call by arguing with the Lord. Moses was doubtful about his ability to take up the risk, so he raised many objections. His first objection was a genuine one, “Who am I?” (v :11). Moses expressed his insignificance to the great task of Exodus. God guaranteed him, “I will be with you”. God reminded him that it was not a task to be done alone but a joint venture with God. Whenever God calls us to do something beyond our strength, it is His presence that strengthens us. The subsequent events proved that Moses was very capable of speaking God’s words with mighty power both to his own people and to the king of Egypt. The lesson to us is that God knows us better than we know ourselves. We must trust and obey God. In the Great commission to the eleven apostles Jesus said “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20). We are called to be the agents of transformation in our Lord’s plan and ministry. As the church, let us fulfill His purposes in the world. May the Holy Spirit lead and guide us.

May God bless you All. Yours in Christ, Rev. Sajit Thomas John, Vicar.

“The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!” Psalms 97:1 (NRSV)

The Psalmist who wrote this many years ago is affirming his faith that God’s reign is not limited to Israel. It extends all over the world. This is a source of joy to all that believe in God. But it is also a commandment to spread the word of God to the ends of the Earth. When we look at people who were faithful to God like Daniel, wherever they went they had faith in God and lived a life that glorified God. By their life the people around them learned about God and what God expected from them. Romans 10:14-15 states, “But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him unless they are sent?” As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” We are sent into the world to be the light and salt of the world. By our life as we worship and rejoice in God, we are spreading the message that the world needs to hear. The message that there is a God who loves us, cares for us, and is always with us. This God wants to have a relationship with us. This relationship requires us to live our life according to His will. We are to glorify God in all that we do, so that they message of God can be spread to the ends of the world. Yours in Christ’s Service, Rev. Shibi Abraham, Youth Chaplain.
