PROUD CRAFTERS OF THIS BOOK
We’ve been where you are. Yes, you. Right there. Looking at this book. Thinking about what you’re going to do next. Trying to decide if art school is the right choice. Weighing your options. Oh, yes. We’ve been there.
And here we are, four years later, designing an updated version of the very book we received when we first started thinking about going to Ringling. It’s funny. Ask 100 Ringling students how they ended up here, and you’re likely to get 100 different answers. Some of us knew right away we wanted to pursue art. Some of us had to make a tough decision, choosing between doing what we love and doing what everyone else wanted us to do. Some of us came straight from high school. Some of us took a more roundabout path.
Naturally, you’ve got questions. What’s campus like? What’s Sarasota like? What are the students like? This book is intended to help answer those questions. But if we could offer a bit of advice, too, it would be something like this: Do what makes you happy. Don’t worry about fitting in. Dream big.

A special place. Come see for yourself.
SARASOTA, FL Way more than just a beach town
Everyone knows Sarasota has gorgeous beaches. One of them, Siesta Key, was even ranked as the most beautiful beach in America. Visitors from across the globe flock here to bask in the sun and swim in the warm surf, and Ringling College students do the same. They’re experts at taking advantage of the city’s 35 miles of sparkling white sands. They tan all day, they play beach volleyball, they go standup paddleboarding.
But Sarasota’s natural beauty extends well beyond its beaches.
Myakka River State Park offers a blast of wild Florida, with alligator sightings, airboat tours, canoeing, and miles and miles of swamps and flatwood hiking trails. And be sure to kayak the mangrove tunnels, quiet waterways that snake through dense tangles of trees that grow in and around our bay.
Practice your grinds at the city skatepark, cruise up and down the 10-mile Legacy bike trail, catch a ballgame… the list of ways to enjoy Sarasota’s beauty is almost limitless. And it doesn’t hurt that our outstanding climate means you can enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous light almost every day of the year.
98SARASOTA
Almost since its founding, Sarasota has been a cultural mecca, a place that has drawn the creative and free-spirited, the inspired and the wild. Things are no different today.
While the city has a reputation as a charming, quiet beach town, young people know better. Browse incredible art at the Ringling Museum. Catch an experimental play by one of the city’s many theater companies. Meet some of the finest actors and directors working today at the annual Sarasota Film Festival.
Then let loose. Sarasota is home to a bevy of national award-winning restaurants and buzzing farmers’ markets with exceptional treats, plus serious-about-their-beans coffee shops, hopping live music venues, and a thriving community of young people who know how to have a good time.
The city is also a diverse place, home to active communities of immigrants from across Latin America, Asia, and Europe. When you hit town, you’ll hear foreign languages galore. Start your day with breakfast tacos and Ethiopian coffee, catch a foreign film at the local cinema, then spend the night dancing to live music. Sarasota’s got it all.
CULTURE Live it, breathe it, eat it
1110SARASOTA
It’s small enough to walk across in a matter of minutes, but it’s so much more than what you’ll find at other art colleges. Our campus is a traditional, residential college environment specially designed by and for creative people. It’s a place where you work, create, and study, but also where you immerse yourself in college life. Everything you need is right here, including specialized studios and labs, residences, a fitness center, numerous galleries, a brand-new library, and plenty of spaces where you and your friends can relax and inspire one another.
CAMPUS Designed with artists in mind
It’s trite but true: Never in the history of earth have humans been so connected. We watch cell phone footage captured and uploadedfrom the most remote corners of the planet. We tweet at strangers who live half a world away. We collaborate on projects that shoot back and forth via Skype and video conference. We recognize that inescapable reality at Ringling College, and have created several international programs that aim to prepare students for working across time zones and language barriers, vital skills in today’s job market. The Interior Design department, for instance, teams up junior-year students with students at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. Tasked with coming up with designs for commercial spaces, students on both sides of the Pacific are learning how to collaborate with distant colleagues.
Live, create, interact, and learn in a community with people who come from more than 65 countries and nearly every state. At Ringling we promote international dialogue, respect, inclusion, and community. You’ll feel at home here because you’ll connect with people who are just like you, and many who are not all that different.
PERSPECTIVE Connect globally

The world of art and design never sits still. New technologies and tools arrive with startling frequency, leaving many in the field scrambling to catch up.
Not Ringling.
It all starts on day one, when incoming students receive a MacBook Pro notebook computer, loaded with all the latest software, free of charge. Working on something that needs a little more computing power? Ringling’s computer labs are decked out with 550 Macintosh computers, 319 PCs, high-resolution laser printers, 3D printers, laser cutters, and much, much more. Large-format printing is also available, and students can use the college’s digital checkout program to borrow an amazing array of high-tech gear like game consoles, video cameras, and digital projectors. Overall, the school has 2.2 computers per student. The national average: 0.14.
It all adds up to one of the most advanced, forward-leaning campuses in the country. U.S. News & World Report recently named Ringling the Most Wired Campus in America.

Ryan Van Cleave Liberal ArtsRyan writes it all. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, textbooks, young adult… you name it, he’s written it and published it. At Ringling, he teaches how to write horror, fantasy, science fiction, poetry, and more. In addition to his creative endeavors, Ryan has published a pair of well-received nonfiction works on the perils of video game addiction and digital culture.
Katy Betz IllustrationEqually fluent in both traditional and digital media, Katy has created work for a range of diverse clients, including a number of book and magazine publishers, educational foundations, and galleries. She draws inspiration from her frequent worldwide wandering, and has studied art history at more than 100 museums around Europe and North America. Her work often touches on the intersection of fantasy, philosophy, and nature.
Eric Gingrich Game ArtEric’s list of video game credits runs to 15 titles across 11 platforms and nine genres, and includes some of the industry’s biggest: Where the Wild Things Are, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory, and a number of Harry Potter titles. At Ringling, he ties game design into several other disciplines, emphasizing gaming’s combination of storytelling, writing, drawing, painting, sculpture, music, sound, animation, film, and even architecture.
Jason Bennett Computer Animation & Game ArtIn addition to teaching at Ringling, Jason maintains an active concept and freelance artist career in the gaming industry, working with big names like Ubisoft, Take Two, EA, THQ, 4mm Games, Paizo, and Wizards of the Coast. Recent projects include Homefront and Bioshock: Infinite, and he’s developed games for console, PC, mobile, and social platforms. He draws and paints, too, and has shown his work at a number of fine art spaces around New York City.
Jill Taffet Motion DesignAn Emmy-winning creative director, Jill has worked with a number of popular TV channels: E!, ESPN, MSNBC, Discovery, Oxygen, and TV Land. She’s also an active artist who creates immersive video installations and animated GIFs, with a number of international exhibitions under her belt, including shows in Munich and Kiel, Germany; New York City; Detroit; and Los Angeles.
Bradley Battersby FilmBrad has worked in the film industry as a screenwriter, director, and cinematographer, and has written and directed five feature films, working with actors like Martin Landau, Courteney Cox, Jeremy Piven, Nastassja Kinski, Peter Coyote, and Kris Kristofferson. He’s taught at the American Film Institute, the Los Angeles Film School, UCLA Extension, and the Maine Media Workshops.
Seongwoo Nam Interior DesignAs an architect, designer, and educator, Seongwoo understands that every creative professional must have a global perspective. Most Ringling graduates will someday work with clients and colleagues based overseas. His International Collaborative Design Studio course pairs juniors with their counterparts at Yonsei University in South Korea. Each team works on a multifaceted project for an international corporation and presents its design solutions to company executives. It doesn’t get more “real world” than that.
Ringling faculty do much more than teach. They’re active, respected leaders in their fields, with deep networks of contacts and strong backgrounds in the professional world. Here’s a sampling.

Let’s face it: College can be stressful. There are deadlines to meet, professors to please, and parties to attend. The pace can wear you down and wear you out, which is where Ringling College’s health and wellness programs come in.
In 2006, Ringling opened its on-campus Susan Palmer Fitness Center, a high-tech and versatile space where students can work out almost any time, day or night. But students don’t have to stay on campus to stay fit: The college organizes kayaking, hiking, and scuba diving trips, often at the request of students looking for fresh ways to stay active. You can even check out a bike to cruise around town for free.
Even if you eat healthy and stay fit, odds are you’re bound to get sick at some point. Which is where the college’s Student Health Center comes into play. The center provides relief for countless common ailments, routine checkups, and mental health support.
WELLNESS Nurturing the whole student
Ringling College students are a breed apart, so we’ve designed our common areas and living spaces with our students’ specific needs in mind. Our state-of-the-art residence facilities include huge common areas for lounging and recreation, plus project rooms on each floor that are big enough to allow students to work on large-scale artwork right where they live. Those common areas lead to conversation, inspiration, and collaboration on a daily basis.
We make your life easy in other ways, too. Every student can ride the Sarasota County Area Transit bus system for free during all four years at Ringling, making it a breeze to get around the city even if you don’t have a car. And every year the college books free transportation to some of the biggest attractions and events in the state: Miami’s Art Basel; Universal Studios, home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter; and, of course, Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Ringling College is dedicated to shattering the myth of the starving artist. More than 80 companies confirm this by coming to Ringling year after year to recruit—companies like Disney, Pixar, Hallmark, Hasbro, and more. Within a year of graduation, 80 percent of 2013 graduates were working full-time or as interns or were pursuing higher degrees.
Starting in the fall 2015 semester, the Collaboratory Commitment* guarantees that every student will have the opportunity to engage in client-based work before graduation. By capitalizing on its industry relationships, Ringling is placing students and graduates on high-profile assignments as varied as feature films, documentaries, live television, professional sports, conceptual projects, and video game development. Whether through The Collaboratory, The Studio Lab, Career Services, or Classroom Partnerships, the opportunities for real-world experience guaranteed by Ringling College enhance career success for our graduates.
And the support doesn’t end when you graduate. The Career Services office keeps in touch with graduates for the rest of their lives, and is always available to assist them as their career goals change. We’ll take you higher.
*The Collaboratory is an initiative developed by Ringling College in partnership with The Patterson Foundation that provides creative, experiential learning opportunities to all its students.

Ringling College never sits still. Over the past decade, a number of major projects have radically transformed the school’s campus. And we aren’t stopping now.
For starters, the college is in the middle of building a $7 million, 30,000-square-foot digital filmmaking soundstage that will give film students the chance to work side by side with industry pros. On top of that, construction on the school’s new $16 million, 48,000-square-foot library will begin in 2016, with a design that incorporates traditional library resources with an imaginative first-floor space dubbed a creative cauldron, intended to be a site where students meet and gather and bounce ideas off one another.
There’s more. A brand new $3 million, 20,000 square-foot visual arts center is slated to open in December 2016, and the college is also in the middle of a complete reinvention of Sarasota High School, turning that historic space into the much-anticipated $22 million Sarasota Museum of Art.
And after all that? No doubt another project will soon be in the works.
THE FUTURE Always on the move
A ticket to visit Ringling was very expensive, so I had never seen campus before school started. The people at Ringling are the most polite people I’ve ever come across, and that gave me confidence about coming here. Plus, there are a lot of international students, and we relied on one another. By the second day, I was already making friends.

During my first week at Ringling, I had to adjust to a whole new culture while also getting used to a hectic college schedule. But Ringling has a diverse and tight group of international students, so I never felt like an outcast in any way. There was always someone close by who also knew how it felt to be far away from home.

When I started at Ringling I wanted to get connected, so I started playing soccer and flag football and even tried yoga. I’ve met some of my best friends playing sports here, and I love how you don’t have to be a pro to participate. We spend so much time indoors looking at our computers, it’s extremely important to get out of the labs and get some fresh air and exercise. You feel better—mind, body, and soul.

When I was 17, before I came to Ringling, I launched my one-woman Etsy business Happy Cosmos, selling handmade accessories and stuffed toys. What I’ve learned here is how to create a brand—how to build a company culture, manage the accounting, and design marketing materials and announcements. Now I sell worldwide, with more than 2,500 sales in five years.

I didn’t know much about colleges in the U.S. and was nervous about going to school in another country, but a teacher of mine recommended I check out Ringling. I’m so glad I did. The faculty here are always willing to take the time to help me understand a project, and it turns out there are almost 20 other Koreans in my class. That made it very easy to make friends.
SEUNG WOO KANGIllustration Seoul, South Korea
The staff at Ringling inspired me to look for jobs on campus, and I found so much opportunity. I’ve learned so much about planning events and leading a team, and working here has been a great way to meet the staff, the students, and the faculty. By now, I probably know 75 percent of the people on campus. Between on-campus jobs and my internship at Abercrombie & Fitch, I’ve gotten plenty of work experience, just from being at Ringling.
RUSSELL MANKGraphic Design Lakeland, FL
Ringling is so much more than an art school. I got the chance to start doing on-camera interviews for All Ringling Television, Ringling’s on-campus TV network, after I found out about the channel during a volunteer fair. It’s given me so much confidence, not only in my academic work, but for my future career, too. I learned that when I’m at my most uncomfortable I’m often at my best. I used to be really shy about studying art, but now I know I have a place in this exciting creative world.
DANIA HAMMADIllustration North Providence, RI
Collaborating with a student from South Korea was really fun, and it taught me so much about dealing with people from different cultures and using social media and Skype to communicate, as well as how interior design is different in every country. When you’re working on a project by yourself, you’re very, very critical, but when you get to bounce ideas off someone else, it makes the experience so much richer.
LAUREN GAYLEInterior Design High Point, NC
I did the PreCollege program between my junior and senior years of high school, and I had a great, great time and made a lot of friends who are here with me now. It helped me figure out exactly what I wanted to do after high school and gave me an entire year to get myself prepared and get over the fear factor. When I got to campus as a student, I already knew the layout, knew a lot of the faculty, and even knew a lot of the students who were first-years with me. It was very eye-opening.
YILMAZ SAZAKFine Arts Ankara, Turkey
When I applied for a 12-week summer internship at Pixar, it was very impersonal. You just upload your portfolio on the website. But some upperclassmen at Ringling who had done the internship gave me some insight into what they were looking for, and I got in! I was one of only 40 or 50 interns that summer. While there, I learned a ton about salesmanship and pitching skills, using body language to describe your vision. Before you can tell your story to the world, you’ve got to tell it to 30 people in a room.
CHRISTINA CHANGComputer Animation Rockville, MD
The Center for Career Services does an amazing job. They schedule portfolio reviews and interviews that allow actual industry recruiters to view our work. I met with Epic Games when they came to campus and Career Services helped me prepare by sitting down for one-on-one sessions and a résumé review. They also hooked me up at a Game Developers Conference luncheon, where I got to make some important connections and take my first steps toward joining the industry I’ve always wanted to work in.
KEVIN WHITMEYERGame Art Bethesda, MD
There are a lot of great volunteer programs at Ringling that are open to anyone and let you work in many different ways for many different causes. Right now I’m working on a documentary about creativity in education that’s focused on Ringling’s YEA! Program, which pairs Ringling students with local schools to provide their students with an arts education. If some of my work happens to spark some sort of positive social change, I would be incredibly honored.
ALONSO VASQUEZFilm Arequipa, Peru
Ringling College doesn’t do anything by the book. You’ll learn that right away.
It’s true that all artists and designers need to understand the basics of drawing, design, color, and more, but we’ve tailored all of our freshman foundation courses to the specific needs of students in different disci-plines. An animator sketches differently than a photographer, and a film-maker uses light differently than an interior designer, so we’ve created deep, focused, and highly specialized courses that let our freshmen jump immediately into meaningful projects that connect directly to the majors they want to pursue.
In addition to those specialized foundation courses, our students also begin taking classes within their disciplines in their first year, sometimes even working with actual clients. Starting with your first semester here, you’ll be developing the essential skills you need to succeed as an arts professional. We wouldn’t have it any other way.Charcoal Yiru Jiang

It’s no longer enough for advertisers to simply pitch to their customers. The traditional media landscape is fractured. We’re bombarded with video and audio. A hot new social media site pops up every week. To capture your customer’s attention, you need more than a nice picture and some snappy text. Today’s winning ad campaigns use storytelling and entertainment to create experiences for consumers that engage and inspire.
In Ringling College’s Advertising Design department, we teach our students how to navigate this increasingly cluttered and overwhelming media world. ur students will have careers that define the future of the profession, combining theory and practice with creativity and ingenuity. We start by integrating the business practices of research and strategic planning with the creative techniques of design and copywriting. Then we execute our ideas in collaboration with other majors such as Business of Art and Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Film. Finally, we push you to create your own brand. Advertising Design students learn by doing.

Ringling College Computer Animation students do it all. They design, paint, model, texture, animate, light, composite, and edit original films. And since all those skills must be directed toward telling a great story, our students also learn how to create and refine their own ideas.
Animation doesn’t mean moving objects. It means moving an audience. That’s why the Computer Animation department focuses on teaching its students how to craft a complete work of art—combining technical skills with a well-thought-out aesthetic vision and the ability to tell a compelling tale. That mix of talents is why animation studios from all over the world look to Ringling College for the best and the brightest, and why so many of our graduates go on to become tomorrow’s creative leaders.

Story comes first. Cinematography, sound design, production design… every component of a film must contribute directly to the story being told. Technology may change, but the power of a great story never will.
Ringling College’s Film department focuses heavily on grooming our students to become the storytellers of tomorrow. We work with students to help them develop their individual narrative voices from the screen-writing process to the final product. We also bring the best of the best to campus to help students make the connections that will boost their careers, and encourage them to pursue full-semester internships in Los Angeles and New York, where they can put their storytelling skills to use in a real industry setting.
We don’t just pay lip service to the importance of story. We insist on it.

The Fine Arts program at Ringling College attracts the free-thinkers, the second-guessers, those who believe emerging technologies can be adapted to find new ways to use traditional artistic processes. Fine Arts majors are pioneers, exploring new artistic terrain and reshaping what we think of when we think of contemporary art.
But before you reach those heights, you need a solid grounding in the practicalities of painting, sculpture, printmaking, and time-based art, lifelong skills that will serve you well in whatever field you work in. We also help you develop those techniques off-campus, through collabora-tions that take our students to New York City and around the world. As you’re learning methods both new and old, our faculty will push you to develop your own personal style and artistic voice, always walking a fine line between form and content, intellect and instinct.
IN FINE ARTS, YOU’RE CONSTANTLY BREAKING NEW GROUND. HERE, YOUR VISION IS ALWAYS SUPPORTED; YOUR VOICE, ALWAYS HEARD.

We’re in the midst of a video game revolution. The world is rapidly moving away from viewing games as just escapist entertainment and toward considering them a new art form with incredible untapped potential. No form of entertainment offers as interactive and immersive an experience as gaming, and Ringling College Game Art graduates are at the forefront of pushing the art to new heights.
Game Art students begin by learning the basics of game design mechanics, meaningful play, interactivity, and storytelling, then mix that knowledge with an in-depth understanding of 3D animation software and game engines. By the time they graduate, our students are creating texture-rich, visually sophisticated game environments that educate, inform, and entertain.

Graphic designers solve problems. Using a broad collection of skills, they create design solutions in print, video, and interactive media—from an app interface so useful you hardly notice it, to a poster so powerful you can’t ignore it, to the very book you’re holding right now. No matter the venue or audience, graduates from Ringling College’s Graphic Design department make you look and help you understand.
We teach the fundamentals of typography and image-making using the latest hardware and software, but we also sketch and build with our hands. Our students learn to tackle design challenges inherent to a rapidly evolving media landscape: How to organize, interpret, and craft words and images to make a meaningful connection to a specific audience. We teach communication theory and principles, as well as impart a deeper understanding of society and culture. Our graduates excel because they know how to say what they want to say, and how to get people to pay attention.

Interior designers craft the environments that surround us at home, at school, at work, at play, and fill our daily lives with beauty and functionality. No wonder they’re in such hot demand, with Fortune 500 companies, governments, and nonprofits all lining up to hire interior designers to help them design spaces that enhance and improve people’s lives.
At Ringling College, the Interior Design department begins with thorough lessons on color, texture, form, light, and empty space. Students use the latest software to situate their designs in both real and virtual environments, and they also analyze existing spaces and plans for future buildings. Our connections with industry associations like the American Society of Interior Designers, the International Interior Design Association, Emerging Green Builders, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation prepare our graduates for long and successful careers.

You see it every day, but you probably didn’t know it had a name. You see it when you go to the movies, watch TV, surf the web, or go shopping. It’s the mysterious title sequence that sets the mood for the latest sci-fi movie. It’s the beautiful animated graphics that introduce the Olympic games. It’s the cool interface on that website you use to make your own snowboard designs. Anywhere there’s a screen, you’re probably seeing creative work called motion design.
Motion designers thrive in a fast-paced environment, assuming multiple roles on a variety of creative projects, and Ringling College’s Motion Design department prepares you to do whatever it takes to get the job done. We’ll teach you design, animation, concept design, storyboard art, videography, composition, sound design, and art direction, and you’ll learn how to work collaboratively with other creative people from different fields. And we get you ready to work: You’ll be tackling actual projects from actual clients. Motion design is everywhere. So are our graduates.

Today, everyone’s a photographer, snapping pictures of dinner to upload to their Instagram feed and sharing shots of friends and family all day on Facebook. But even as amateurs crash the gates of the photo world, professional photographers have only become more valuable. They tell stories and capture moments that might otherwise go unseen, bolstering hundreds of industries, including science, medicine, technology, music, entertainment, education, news, sports, fashion, and media.
The Photography and Imaging major at Ringling College offers students an effective blend of both technical and conceptual skills. We teach the photographic tradition as well as contemporary imaging techniques and ask students to apply that knowledge to their personal work. Our students are also expected to be aware of the major critical issues facing the medium today. We encourage students to constantly question how their work deals with issues of representation, culture, and technology.
