By recognizing challenges and turning them into possibilities, Hanul brings hope to our community.

FY2015 Board of Directors ( Hanul+Possibility=HOPE )

Letter from the President

The first year of our new Strategic Plan, “Preparing for the Next 25 Years,” has provided Hanul with many possibilities for future growth. The staff, board, and volunteers of Hanul have worked extremely hard to establish the strategic goals to build a stronger foundation for the next 25 years of service Hanul will bring to the community. Progress is impossible without change, and different possibilities have kept us going to make Hanul a more effective, efficient, and comprehensive provider of social services. We could not have done it without your support, and we need your continued assistance to turn possibilities into realities that will enhance the lives of the people that we serve. We look forward to your guidance and partnership as we take another step towards becoming the leading organization to meet the needs of our ever-changing Korean-American community in the Chicago Metropolitan area. We invite you to take a look at our 2014 Annual Report, and encourage you to learn more about us at our website, www.hanulusa.org. Thank you.

Care with PASSION

Serve with REGARDIt was in 2006 that I first visited Hanul for assistance. Because

of my advanced age I had difficulty retaining self-sufficiency

and started to build questions regarding senior services.

Many of the older Korean immigrants have very low levels

of literacy and understanding of public services that are out

there. Although I acquired US citizenship after immigrating,

it sure was a demanding experience when I tried to apply for

public services myself due to the language barriers. Hanul

provided culturally sensitive assistance and enabled me to

obtain variety of senior benefits. It was truly the moment

that I felt I was a citizen being cared for. The most grateful

part of getting help from Hanul was the fact that I was able

to communicate and express without restrictions. In addition,

the professionalism that Hanul staffs have demonstrated

provided me the confidence. The only short coming in getting

services from Hanul was the location. Hanul Mt. Prospect

office was too distant. However, they soon opened up a new

office near my community in Lake County and I can’t be more

excited about the new office. Overcoming cultural, linguistic,

socioeconomic, and geographic barriers to the provision of

social services is not an easy task. However, it has become

a reality through Hanul.

Home Care Aide Yoomi Jeong starts her day with prayer,

asking for the ability to truly recognize the needs of the seniors

she serves and provide care from a sincere heart. As a Home

Care Aide, Ms. Jeong is known as “The Magical Hands” for her

professional work ethic and spirit of volunteerism in everything

she does. She is tremendously trusted by her clients and makes

a positive difference in their everyday lives as she helps them

with food, transportation, cleaning, bathing, grocery shopping,

and companionship. There are countless stories, but the one Ms.

Jeong remembers the most is the time there was an elevator

malfunction and she walked up many flights of stairs to provide

bring Korean food to the client who was homesick for her

country. Ms. Jeong recalls that moment as being fulfilling and

enormously rewarding; the extra work to go up the stairs was

worth it because of her client’s gratitude. Another time, one

of Ms. Jeong’s clients wanted to reach a friend in Korea but

did not know how to contact her. Ms. Jeong called one of her

acquaintances in Korea and managed to contact the friend that

her client had been missing for a long time. With Ms. Jeong’s

help, the client was finally able to talk to her friend in South

Korea before she passed away a couple of months later. Home

Care Aides at Hanul Family Alliance not only take care of their

clients’ physical needs, but their emotional needs as well, going

out of their way to provide comfort to seniors who might

otherwise feel isolated. Hanul certainly has the expertise to close

the disparities in the availability of and access to high-quality

social services.
