It isn't a good time to go to the grocery store when the winter "s" word and "i" word are all over our local weather forecasts; we can be assured the stores will be crowded. Modern technology has made it possible to predict the weather fairly accurately, and even in Arkansas we try to listen. Still, at its best, predicting the weather is not an exact sci-ence. When Jesus walked on this earth, the science of weather predic-tion was even more primitive than it is today. Still, He said:

"When it is evening, you say it will be fair weather, for the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" (Matthew 16:3-4)

Jesus was addressing the religious leaders of the Jews who were seeking a sign from heaven to prove that Jesus was the Messiah. His response indicated they were far better at reading the weather than they were at seeing the signs God had given them. One would think they would have noticed the sudden appearance of the star of Bethlehem or perhaps, the news about Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan where the Holy Spirit as-cended on Him and the very Voice of God was heard from Heaven say-ing, "This is my beloved Son...." A sign from heaven?

Their problem was not a lack of information nor a lack of evi-dence. Standing in front of them was the sinless Son of God. His words and works gave constant affirmation to the truth He was not just a man. It was the "fullness of times." If anyone should have known it was time for Daniel's 69th week, it should have been the Jewish religious leaders. They didn't listen because they were a "wicked and adulter-ous" generation. Full of evil and sexual sin, they wouldn't even respond to the sign of the prophet Jonah. Jonah was three days and nights in the deep, figuratively coming back from the dead, to preach to the peo-ple of Ninevah. They repented. The Jews would not.

God, help us to do better than they did. Help us to recognize the time is short. Break us free from the monotonous, mind-numbing, blinding rou-tine of self-preoccupation to realize we have a greater cause. Help us to discern the signs of the times. Amen.
