Supporting Scotland’s Children

One in fi ve children in Scotland lives in poverty.

The STV Children’s Appeal was launched in 2011 by STV and The Hunter Foundation.

To date, the appeal has raised an amazing £8.2 million, generating 297 grants to projects across Scotland. This means we’ve been able to help over 37,000 children.

STV Children’s Appeal promises to:

Give every penny of every pound that you fundraise to the children who need it most

Keep all of the money raised within Scotland

Invest every penny into projects that will make a real difference to the lives of children affected by poverty

Give a voice to children who can’t be heard

Support at least one community project in every single local authority in Scotland

STV Children’s Appeal is committed to helping children affected by poverty right here in Scotland.

Printfield Community Project was established in 1989 to develop support services which meet the needs of local families. These services include a crèche for children under the age of three, out of school care for primary aged children whose parents or carers are in employment or education, as well as youth services and an after school club. The project also provides a drop-in for one-to-one support for young people.

“The £2,000 grant from the STV Appeal is being used to fund a drumming group for children and young people to learn how to read music

and play the drums. Drumming gives the young people confidence and helps them

with concentration, written work and numeracy. Several of them are also

taking music at school, so we are also supporting their school

education too.”

– Kit Trail, coordinator, Printfield Community Project

An Edinburgh based initiative working with Circle Scotland and Link Up Muirhouse. Improving outcomes for children and families in the neighbourhood around Craigroyston, the project takes a three-pronged approach:

Strengthening links to services that are open to all like health, early years and schools.

Supporting local people to organise their own activities.

Supporting families.

“We’re so thankful that STV Children’s Appeal is supporting our work with the community of Ardeer. This award will help us to support

those who need it most and will form even stronger

bonds with our Centrestage community.”

- Fiona McKenzie, CEO Centrestage

Communities

CentrestageThe Catalyst Community, run by Centrestage, provides music, dance, art and enterprise workshops. All of the activities are inspired by the power of the arts to create meaningful change, resilience and self-belief in communities.

Community outings provide a unique response to the social inequalities in the area, helping to broaden horizons and increase opportunities for local people. They hope to identify and train new leaders to develop the community’s aspirations for the future.

Shettleston Community Growing Project

The Smelly Welly Club reconnects children and their families in a variety of ways. The children are part of every element of cultivation from sowing, growing, nurturing and harvesting, to cooking and eating their own fruit and vegetables directly from the plot to the pot. This is done in a fun and informal environment, building confidence, new friendships and skills for life. Members also learn about the importance of attracting bees and butterflies by planting attractive flowers including sunflowers.

Our aim is to successfully connect the young people with the food they grow. In order to do this we decided to hold cooking workshops. The workshops involve making soup with vegetables and herbs grown at the plots available in the

Smelly Welly allotment. The donation from the STV Children’s Appeal is gratefully received and will help to

buy seeds, plants and other resources when the project restarts in a few

weeks’ time.”
