Esther Beach Park Receives New Life

OUT ABOUT

Named after the former landowner’s daughter, who died in 1883, and once known as a popular lakeshore

resort, Esther Beach Park will soon open again.

The revitalization of the park began with its expansion in December 2010, when the City of Madison was

offered the option to buy two of the adjacent lots. Once purchased, Parks staff held several neighborhood public

input meetings to develop the Esther Beach Park Master Plan, which was approved by the Board of Park

Commissioners in 2012.

The park now offers a newly constructed restroom building and reservable shelter, a raingarden and a new play

area with an accessible path. Other improvements include repaving of the parking lot, shoreline restoration,

adding a stormwater swale, and reconstruction of the storm infrastructure to reduce the total pollutants and

runoff events into the lake. A ribbon cutting event is anticipated next spring.

Brittingham Park Receives New Playgrounds

It is clear the uniqueness of Brittingham Park serves a diverse population, with its 25 acres, stunning views of Monona Bay, reservable shelter, and many other amenities, including an off-lease dog park.

During this spring and summer, two new playgrounds at the park (near 829 W. Washington Ave.) were under construction and a public input process was held for each last fall. For the playground near the community gardens, attendees voted on the age range and the color of the equipment and the surfacing. The winning play equipment, which is purple and lime green and designed for ages 5-12 includes rubber mulch surfacing and was completed on August 10.

Near the shelter, the fully-accessible playground was near completion at the end of August. Read more about the fully-accessible playground in Out & About: Spring 2017 Edition. A ribbon cutting ceremony is anticipated for this autumn.

Shoreline Restoration at Tenney Park LagoonIn 2015, the City of Madison Parks and Engineering divisions spearheaded improvements to Tenney Park including reconstruction of the East Johnson bike path, removals of invasive species and ash trees, and stabilization of the Tenney Park lagoon shoreline. The bike path construction and the grading associated with shoreline restoration was completed in 2015.

In 2016, Madison Parks improvement efforts to the lagoon shoreline included the installation of over 800 native shrubs, 30,000 shoreline and prairie plants, over 200 trees and continued removal of invasive plants. Today, just two years after the project began the shoreline is stabilized and thriving.

Tenney Park is a City of Madison Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places, which required plans to be approved by the City of Madison Landmarks Commission and Wisconsin State Historical Society. The landscape architecture reflects the original vision of the historic plans developed O.C. Simonds and John Nolen.

For more information on the project and association public process, please visit the Tenney Park Shoreline Rehabilitation & Tenney Park Path (Johnson Street) Reconstruction website.
