I t’s official. Riders who will rep- resent the United States’ Reining Squad at the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), have been selected. The prestigious event will be held Aug. 23-Sept. 7 in Normandy, France. Squad members competed in April’s Adequan/USEF Open Reining National Championship & Selection Trial, held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Their composite scores from the two go-round Open Reining determined the six-member squad. Shawn Flarida, of Springfield, Ohio, rode Spooks Gotta Whiz (Spooks Gotta Gun x Prettywhizprettydoes x Topsail Whiz), owned by Michell Anne Kimball, of Encinitas, Calif., to the gold medal with a 452.5 overall (225/227.5) score. Flarida, a National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Five Million Dollar Rider, was also a member of the 2010 Alltech FEI WEG Gold Medal USA Team. Mandy McCutcheon, of Aubrey, Texas, set a couple records in Lexington – one as the first woman, and second as the first non-pro to qualify for a USA reining squad. The NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider rode Yellow Jersey (Wimpys Little Step x Ms Clara Melody x Mr Melody Jac), owned by her parents, Tim and Colleen McQuay’s McQuay Stables, of Tioga, Texas, to a silver medal and 449 com- posite (224/225) score. NRHA Million Dollar Rider Jordan Larson, of Whitesboro, Texas, secured a spot on the squad after winning the bronze medal with a 448 composite (223/225) score. He rode HF Mobster (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Dun Its Black Gold x Hollywood Dun It), owned by Heritage Farms, of Ogden, Utah. Andrea Fappani, an NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider, finished fourth and fifth. The Scottsdale, Ariz., train- er rode Smoking Whiz (Topsails Whiz x Glendas A Smokingun x Gunner) to a 446.5 (223.5/223) score. He and Custom Cash Advance (Custom Crome x Cash In Roan x Topsail Cody) scored a 445 (220/225). Both horses are owned by Michael and Michelle Miola's Silver Spurs Equine, of Scottsdale, Ariz. Troy Heikes, of Scottsdale, and Lil Gun Dunit (Gunner x Hollywood Baby Dunit x Hollywood Dun It), owned by Denise Bixler, of Wilson, Wyo., scored a 442 (221/221) to finish sixth. According to WEG rules, Fappani will only be able to show one horse in Normandy; therefore, NRHA Million Dollar Rider Tom McCutcheon will join his wife, Mandy, and the six- member squad. Tom, a member of the 2010 Gold Medal Team and an individual gold medalist, rode Dun Git A Nicadual (Mister Nicadual x Gotta Git Ya Dun x Hollywood Dun It), owned by Jennifer Marley, of Plainview, Texas, to a 440.5 ( 219/221. ) score. Last year, the Breeder’s Invitational (BI) celebrated its 10th anniversary at the Expo

Square in Tulsa, Okla. The 2013 show drew 1,207 entries, which competed for more than $600,000 in added monies and a purse total-ing $1,810,132.

The BI debuted in 2003 in Reno, Nev., where it remained until 2006, when the show was moved to Las Vegas for three years (2006-2008). The BI moved to its present home in Tulsa in 2009. Open to all off-spring of stallions whose owners agree to pay $125 per mare bred, with a minimum of 10 and a maxi-mum of 80, into a BI fund, the BI has distributed more than $1 mil-lion to owners of participating stal-lions and mares.

The show drew its largest number of entries (1,527) in 2012, the year it included a number of events – Special 5 classes – exclusively for 5-year-old horses to help compen-sate for the 2011 show cancellation due to nation-wide concern about an EHV-1 virus outbreak. Because of the additional classes, the added money paid out in 2012 was more than $1 million and the payout totaled $2,769,100.

The BI’s top-earning horse is Sly Playgirl (That Sly Cat x Taquita Playgirl x Freckles Playboy), a 2007 mare bred by Slate River Ranch, of Weatherford, Texas, and owned by Luis De Armas, of Boca Raton, Fla. She won five checks totaling $118,870 at the 2012 BI, includ-ing Classic/Challenge Open and Limited Non-Pro titles with trainer Jaime Snider and De Armas riding. In 2013, the mare won an addi-tional $22,826 to elevate her total BI earnings to $141,697.

Weatherford, Texas, trainer Phil Rapp is the BI’s leading Open rider, with earnings of $522,709 won

astride 31 horses. His high-dollar earner is Cats Twisted Whisker (High Brow Cat x Spins Gay Lena x Docs Spinifex), a 2003 mare bred by Jack Waggoner and Susan Ferguson, of Bridgeport, Texas, and owned by Waco Bend Ranch Ltd., of Graham, Texas, with BI earnings of $106,643, followed by Tapt Twice (Dual Pep x Tap O Lena x Doc O’Lena), a 1999 mare bred by Rapp and owned by Waco Bend, with total BI earnings of $84,059. Lloyd Cox, of Marietta, Okla., has ridden 24 horses to total Open earnings of $458,971, and ranks second on the top 10 open riders chart.

Dustin Adams, of Poolville, Texas, ranks No. 1 among BI Non-Pro rid-ers with 20 horses carrying him to total earnings of $323,689. Adams’ high-dollar BI earner is Reyann Hickory (Dual Rey x Hickorys Tachita x Doc’s Hickory), a 2002 mare bred by Lonnie and Barbara Allsup, of Clovis, N.M.,with earn-ings of $54,204. Marmolaker (Laker Doc x Marmolena x Smart Little Lena), a 2005 gelding bred by EE Ranches of Texas Inc., of Whitesboro, Texas, is Adams’ sec-ond-leading money-earner with BI monies totaling $34,737. • Curb splurgingWhen you shop at a tack or feed

store, do you frequently buy the newest grooming tool, product or supplement on the market? Before long, all those bargains add up to

big bucks and barn clutter. Highly effective barnkeepers take a sim-plistic approach to shopping, buying only the necessities and keeping a few spare tack essentials on hand for emergencies. Curb your urge to

splurge by visiting the tack and feed store only when you need something, then stick to your shopping list.

• Frequently purgeThe old saying, “When in doubt,

Page 7: Out 'N' About: NRBC Equi-Stat: Breeder's Invitational FYI ......Squad at the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), have been selected. The prestigious event will be held Aug. 23-Sept

throw it out,” applies to more than closet and refrigerator contents. Regularly sort through your gear, equipment and supplies. Create three piles: One to keep, one to throw away and one to give away or sell. Honestly assess each item, keeping only what you’ll use in the near future and tossing unwanted or broken gear. Remember to go through your grooming, health-care and veterinarian supplies, too.

• Clutter-busting tipTo avoid a daunting task, orga-

nize one area at a time. For exam-ple, start with your grooming and health-care supplies. The next week-end, move to your tack and feed areas. You’ll be more productive if you’re not overwhelmed.

• Clean sweepOnce you’ve purged your posses-

sions, clean the entire area from top to bottom. Cover your tack or remove it from the premises so it

doesn’t get dirty. Start at the top, removing cobwebs in the corners and high-up dust, and work your way down to the floor. Then sweep the entire area.

• Get, and stay, organizedYou can put everything in its

place, but realistically consider whether it’ll stay there. To increase your chances of putting things away, organize your equipment so that it’s visible and easily accessible for your feeding, cleaning and riding routines. Look for natural dump-ing grounds, and find ways to store things neatly there.

• Commit to cleaningThe next time you’re tempted to

leave an item out, remember that a shortcut taken today must be man-aged tomorrow. The trick to staying on top of things is to clean messes immediately, and encourage every-one who uses your barn to do the same. If you procrastinate cleaning up spills, breaks or disarray, the messes only compound.

Sound of Music

Since the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) began in 1998, Vicki Friedemann, of Jones, Okla., has been a unique source of music for the event. For 16 years,

Friedemann, who used to ride hunter/jumpers, has delighted the NRBC crowds with her herald trumpet. Before the start of each finals, she plays the national anthem and “Call to the Post.”

The fun doesn’t stop there, though. During each drag, Friedemann brings out her trumpet once again for a session of “name that tune,” where specta-tors get the opportunity to win prizes for guessing the name of the song she plays. In years past, she’s played every kind of music imaginable, from the 1950s songs, to Western movie themes and even car-toon ditties.

“It’s one of the most fun shows,” she said of the NRBC. “The people are great.”

And what is her favorite song she's ever played?“I’ve played hundreds of them,” she said when try-

ing to think of just one. “I guess my favorite tune I’ve ever played is probably Sing Sing Sing.” —AH

Mandy McCutcheon, of Aubrey, Texas, easily depicts the image of “Superwoman” – a woman of extraordinary

or superhuman powers, a woman who is very strong, and, especially a woman who has both a successful career and a family. The 32-year-old equestrian superstar and mother of two was recently selected at the World Equestrian Games Selection Trial, held at the Kentucky Reining Cup in Lexington, Ky., to represent Team USA’s Reining Squad at the Alltech Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) World Equestrian Games to be held in August at Normandy, France. She was also recently named as a National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Two Million Dollar Rider – the association’s first woman as well as first non-pro rider to earn the distinction. She has won the prestigious NRHA Futurity Level 4 Non-Pro Championship eight times and most recently won her sixth National Reining Breeders Classic Level 4 Non-Pro Championship. An all-around hand, McCutcheon has also

won numerous hunter/jumper awards. She is the daughter of reining legend and NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Tim McQuay and his wife, Colleen, of Tioga, Texas, and is the wife of NRHA Million Dollar Rider Tom McCutcheon. Having shown since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, as the saying goes, McCutcheon is pictured in 1989 at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, in which she won the Freestyle Non-Pro Reining astride her father’s horse, Doc Bronson. McCutcheon, assisted by her cousin Jennifer Bouley (dressed in a mouse costume), won the class as she and her mount delighted the audience with their performance ridden to the song, “Somewhere Out There.w vv ★
