Northern California is famous for

its outdoor living spaces. However,

some folks living in this beautiful part

of the US don’t realize they can have

more when it comes to choosing their

shade and shelter solutions. Most

search the Internet for ideas, copy

what others have and settle for mediocre style.

When summer temps heat up around here, many stay

inside. Their outdoor spaces are unusable because

they either chose the wrong shade and shelter product

or it just isn’t doing the job. Our goal is to create

comfort in your outdoor space so you can get outside

and enjoy all that California has to offer. The climate

here is mild enough to spend 75% of the year outside,

but without the right shade solution, you will be forced

to stay inside.

Pacific Shade Sails specializes in outdoor weather

management: shade, shelter, heating and cooling.

Some of our products are familiar, yet to most they are

new and exciting. We take great pride in providing

excellent customer service as well as top-notch

products with quality workmanship.

If you are ready to spend more time outside in the

space you call home or work, then give us a call. Our

design team can create a one-of-a-kind shade

structure for you. Don’t forget about adding outdoor

cooling or heaters to extend the time you spend

outdoors!

Make Your Patio POP! Nothing makes patios more

inviting than mixing colorful

palates against natural tones of the outdoors. Most backyards and patios consist of lots of green,

browns and greys—think trees, shrubs, plants and

concrete. Mixing up your color scheme can change

the whole look of your outdoor space.

Here are 3 quick ways to add some pops of color to

your patio.

1. Switching up your pillows is one of the quickest

and most inexpensive ways to refresh your

outdoor area and add a pop of color. Outdoor

pillows typically range in price from $15 -$60

and up depending on fabric, size and brand. I

typically recommend using neutral cushion colors

on furniture which allows you to change out

pillow colors and designs more often. I love when

see a great deal on outdoor pillows - I buy them.

This allows me to switch out pillows with the

seasons or when I’m in the mood for change.

When shopping for outdoor pillows be sure look

for outdoor fabrics that won’t fade or degrade

over time. Sunbrella is definitely the most popular outdoor fabric known for it’s ability to resist

fading as well as mold and mildew Anytime you can store your pillows away during off seasons

or rainy weather, you can prolong the life of them.

2. Patio Accessories like lanterns, planters and candles can put the finishing touches on any space.

These items help create the ambiance of your outdoor room and provide aesthetic interest. They

make your space inviting and mimic the décor of the inside of your home, giving it the true

outdoor living feel.

3. Outdoor rugs can add another element of texture and color. Be sure to choose rugs that are

meant for outdoor use. There are several different styles, colors and materials to select from.

Sisal and bamboo offer a great natural option, but can mildew and mold over time if exposed to

frequent moisture. Choose rugs made of synthetic fibers like polypropylene, acrylic or rugs

made from recycled plastic or rubber. These options are more durable and are generally

easier to clean. Becky Horan Outdoor Space Designs

Casual Elements® does not mass-produce furniture. Every piece we make is unique in some way

because it is hand-crafted to perfection by master

craftsmen. Our production process which usually takes 8 to 10

weeks, starts with the careful selection of timber. The logs are

then transported to the sawmill and cut into boards.

From there they enter the production process at the Casual

Elements® factory. The first stop is the kiln-drying of the boards

which, depending on the type of wood, the thickness of the

boards and the air humidity, can last from 14 days to more than

6 weeks. The moisture content of the wood must drop to less

that 10% before it is accepted into the production process.

Creating a new model always starts by drawing detailed and precise plans. Once the plans are

approved, the first prototype is

built and tested for style, comfort

and durability. Each component

of an item is carefully hand-

crafted to exact specifications

outlined in our technical manuals.

“We have the best carpenters in

the world” boasts George, “It is a

true pleasure to work with

them. They put their heart and soul into every piece they

handcraft”. Once all components are ready, the furniture piece

is assembled, inspected and then sent to a separate workshop to

undergo the finish process. Like our carpenters, our finishers

are true masters at their art. They take great pride in the quality

of their work knowing that each piece they complete is destined

to adorn a beautiful home or garden.

Once a furniture piece arrives at the finish workshop, it

undergoes 8 to12 different meticulous application steps before

it is completed. After a stay in the “drying room”, the furniture

is carefully inspected, packaged and stored awaiting the long

four-week ocean journey to the Casual Elements® warehouse in Sacramento, California.

The Project: Revive this

torn, sad sling chair

I wanted to replace the torn canvas with a

more durable, high-functioning fabric. I

selected an eco-friendly white/grey mesh

fabric called ECOLIBRIUM by PHIFER.

The granite color creates a more modern

look for the chair.

Erika Pierce (left) assisted in creating a

template from the torn version and used

her mad sewing skills to quickly assemble

the replacement sling.

I gave the chair a quick sanding to smooth

out any rough areas and create a clean,

smooth surface before applying the stain.

By Becky Horan Outdoor Space Designs

I decided to use a dark ebony stain to accent the grey fabric and continue

the more modern look. I chose this stain because I wanted a dark look,

but still wanted to be able to see the wood grain come through.

The Result: A more modern, updated

sling chair. Time to sit back and relax

with a cold beverage! 11

Here at Creative Outdoor Kitchens we design our outdoor kitchens with function and

affordability in mind. We pride ourselves on helping others make memories through

entertainment in their backyard along with their friends and family. Creative Outdoor

Kitchens started by manufacturing standard grill islands built for people that had limited

space but still wanted the luxury of a beautiful back yard. Our mission to provide quality,

functionality and affordability has proved to be very successful as word of mouth launched

our business into what it is today.

We provide our clients with an exceptional product allowing for a seamless experience, and

let our work speak for its self. With over 10 years’ experience our master craftsmen have been

delivering the ultimate in outdoor spaces. Quality is important to us and we know our

customers will not be disappointed. After all, we got this far on word of mouth; we want our

customers to tell others where they got their wonderful back yard oasis. We want your

business and intend to keep it.

communication is key to ensure you are

fully informed and updated on the

status of your job. You will be involved

in a photo realistic 3D design process

that allows you to view the proposed

design from all angles. This means you

are fully aware of what to expect and

can make any of those small changes

that will ultimately, make the big

difference to the finished kitchen.

Creative Outdoor Kitchens not only

Ecosac bags are made of recycled material and seat

belt webbing. We call them “scraps with straps”. Our

goal is to create bags that are tough as heck, last a

lifetime and look great. If you are looking for a bag

that will carry it all, this one is it.

We are all concerned about the drought here in California. Growing up in Oregon, I was never

concerned about the lack of rain or snow pack, yet living in California has made me aware of how

precious water really is. Everyday when I am in the shower enjoying the water, I think of what it

would be like to suddenly have the water shut off. It scares me deeply. I have made it a mission of mine to conserve

even though others are not. The first thing we did when we moved into our home in Mather was tear out the grass

and replace it with Xeriscaping. Those of you who are not familiar with this term, please explore it. I found this style

in Arizona and fell in love with it. It’s not only efficient and looks unique. Don’t get me wrong, we do have plants out

there, yet they are water-wise grasses as well as lots of drought-tolerant succulents.

Every year we are lucky enough to have the Capital Airshow in our backyard, so we made the most of it by adding lots

of shade and a platform for better viewing of the show. I encourage

many people to explore the concept of Xeriscaping, it will help with

the conservation of water and look amazing!

Great for going to the Beach, shopping, game day or

throwing all your stuff in for heading to work.

About the artist….Terrance Martin

I create metal art with an edge. I want people to stop. To look. To wonder. I create art that suspends

motion, but that inspires sound—people talking, people coming

together. My work is larger than life. Metal, but flowing and warm. Solid,

but sinewy. Complex in its simplicity. Art that breathes life into its space:

Defining, empowering, and resonating within and alongside its

surroundings.
