Putting Foot in MouthWhen I was in high school, I worked as a cashier at a local grocery store. One weekend, at the very end of a ten-hour shift, I was utterly exhausted and partially brain dead. A woman came through buying diapers and baby formula, and as we chatted she confided in me that she had a newborn at home. I, in my brain-dead state, took one look at her still-heavy-with-baby-weight frame and popped off with, "Oh, and another one on the way!" *Hides face in mortal h u m i l i a t i o n * Unfortunately it didn't click until AFTER the words were out of my mouth. I spe n t the r e s t o f the weekend praying I would
never see her again.
Phoning the OperatorAs a young child, I called the phone company for information about the name of the dog aboard a Russian s a t e l l i t e . T h e p h o n e company advertised they had an information line which gave customers a c c e s s t o w o r l d w i d e information on everything. Somehow I thought the phone company was a s u b s i d i a r y o f t h e encyclopedia/some sort of p o s s i b l e i n f o r m a t i o n company. Of course I later realized they were only in the phone business and if I stayed on the line too long, they might try to sell me some yellow phone book page advertising for a fee.
Late for Bible ClassA little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let me be late!" While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again. As she ran she once again began to pray, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late...But please don't shove me either!"
The Boasting BoysThree boys are in the schoolyard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50." The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song,
they give him $100." The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon. And it takes eight people to collect all the money!”

WHAT IS THE SCARIEST THING HAPPENING?It’s Halloween season and the most frightening things happening aren’t scary movie marathons, séances or graveyard ghost tours. Out in the world, common sense is d i s a p p e a r i n g l i k e a translucent apparition in the halls of a haunted house.It’s not uncommon for people to investigate their ancestry a n d t u r n u p u n u s u a l information. Perhaps finding a g r e a t , g r e a t , g r e a t g r a n d m o t h e r w h o w a s burned at the stake after being accused of witchery in Salem. Maybe a long-lost relative was a serial killer. But no ancestor could be as bad as one who sided with the confederacy during the Civil War – especially if there is a statue honoring him.
Deranged activists have toppled these statues around the country – almost in zombie-like fashion. In fact, some of their concrete victims had no relation to civil rights or the civil war. It’s truly scary that they are so uninformed, yet so willing to destroy. They are attempting to erase any history that they find egregious instead of recognizing that our country fought a civil war that culminated in freedom for slaves. In fact, there are a number o f “ c iv i l war ” monuments whose purpose is to remind people of the dark time in our history that was overcome. In OKC, it’s some public schools who’ve become targets. Long-standing names o f J ackson E lementa ry ( C o n f e d e r a t e G e n e r a l Stonewall) and Stand Watie Elementary (Native
A m e r i c a n C o n f e d e r a t e General) are on the chopping block. Their crime is that they were named years ago after men who fought in a war that had lots of ramifications including supporting slavery. But the Democrats were vastly responsible for the Ku Klux Klan activities in the first half of the 20th century and nobody is asking the Democratic party to rename itself.I f OKC Publ ic Schools financial status was stronger, th i s expens ive rename w o u l d n ’ t b e q u i t e s o offensive. But at a time when they can barely hire qualified teachers and the legislature can’t be bothered to balance a budget, the last thing that should be happening is m o n e y – e v e n p r i v a t e d o n a t i o n s - s p e n t o n renaming a school. There were originally even more schools accused of harboring racist names. But after poring over old records, officials couldn’t determine who they were really named after. It even took some digging to determine if it was the “good Jackson” or the “bad Jackson” whose name is on the school. If it’s not readily known that this is an offensive name, why change it? I strongly doubt that anyone paid any mind to the blue and white
“Jackson Elementary School” sign until some people decided to make it the cause of the day. People previously oblivious became strongly offended almost overnight. So what’s next? My oldest son’s middle name is Davis because we are descendants o f P r e s i d e n t o f t h e Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. When will activists demand that all remnants of anything related to the south side of the civil war be outlawed? Maybe we go ahead and start with Jackson County in southwestern Oklahoma. Why should an elementary school be renamed but the same Confederate General’s namesake stays on an entire county? All of this renaming is downright silly, but the future ramifications could be downright scary. In the end, destroying all remnants of the past doesn’t guarantee a better future. Our country isn’t perfect and never has been. But trying to apply today’s standards to the behavior and social mores of another time is wasted energy -- much like knocking down a concrete statue and kicking it. The ghosts of our heritage should remain with us, providing guideposts for future actions and decisions.

U.S. to promote use of opioid alternatives to treat addiction(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration plans to encourage opioid addicts to use less harmful o p i o i d d r u g s s u c h a s m e t h a d o n e a n d buprenorphine, a radical shift in policy that could a g i t a t e t h o s e i n t h e addiction field who believe abstinence is the only effective treatment.Speaking before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Wednesday,
FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb outlined a proposal under which every addict who suffers a non-fatal overdose would be treated with an opioid substitute, f o r l o n g p e r i o d s i f necessary, or even for life. The United States is battling a growing opioid abuse epidemic that claimed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record, according to federal data.
“I know this may make s o m e p e o p l e uncomfortable,” Gottlieb said of his proposal.
Even so, he added, “FDA will join efforts to break the stigma associated with m e d i c a t i o n s u s e d f o r addiction treatment.”Gottlieb’s plan mirrors his recent proposal to reduce nicotine in cigarettes while e x p a n d i n g a c c e s s t o potentially less harmful nicotine delivery devices such as e-cigarettes. Both proposals embrace an approach to substance abuse that aims to reduce harm rather than insist on complete abstinence. The stigma around opioid alternatives, Gottlieb said, “reflects a view some have, tha t a pa t ient i s s t i l l suffering from addiction even when they’re in full recovery, just because they require medication to treat their illness.”Drugs such as methadone and buprenorphine reduce pain in the same way that opioids do, but without
delivering the “high” that leads to addiction. They are used to help addicts taper off opioids, but insurers are not always willing to pay for the treatment.Gottlieb cited data from the C o m m o n w e a l t h o f Massachusetts which found a greater than 50 percent reduction in the risk of death from overdose among t h o s e t r e a t e d w i t h m e t h a d o n e o r buprenorphine after an overdose.This kind of data “has immense implications for insurers and policymakers in deciding how to adopt these treatments,” he said. The FDA also plans to examine expanding the l a b e l s f o r e x i s t i n g m e d i c a t i o n - a s s i s t e d treatment for everyone who presents with an overdose, based on data showing a reduction in deaths.“Such an effort would be a first for FDA,” Gottlieb said. “We believe that granting such an indicat ion in labeling can help promote more widespread use of, and coverage for, these
treatments.”The FDA, he said, will issue guidance for drugmakers to promote the development of new addiction treatments and lay out the agency’s interest in “novel, non-a b s t i n e n c e - b a s e d ” products.

Oklahoma Supreme Court Strikes Down Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Registration FeesScore a win for the Sierra Club as the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the electric vehicle registration fee is unconstitutional. The fee was passed in the last five days of the legislative session“ T h e S i e r r a C l u b applauds the Oklahoma S u p r e m e C o u r t f o r striking down this biased and illegal tax on electric vehicles,” said Johnson Bridgwater, director of t h e S i e r r a C l u b O k l a h o m a c h a p t e r . “There are clear signs that the car industry is poised to go electric quickly and, in Oklahoma, this switch is badly needed. To clean up our dirty air, cut climate emissions and assure Oklahoma i s keeping up with the transition to a clean energy economy, we need
t o a c c e l e r a t e t h e t r ans i t i on t o c l ean , electric vehicles. With t h i s a r b i t r a r y f e e removed, Oklahomans can dr ive down the h i g h w a y t o c l e a n transportation, leaving dirty transportation in the dust.”The fee would have raked in nearly half a million dollars this budget year and about $1 million in 2018, according to a legislative analysis.Lawmakers added a $100 annual fee on owners of electric cars and $30 for hybrid vehicles.In the 6-3 ruling, the court determined the Legislature’s sole purpose on House Bill 1449 was to raise revenue.House Bill 1449 “clearly levies a tax in the strict sense of the word and the incurred revenue from it
is not incidental to its purpose,” wrote Justice Joseph Watt.“Our roads and bridges are taking a beating from these heavier vehicles, yet they do not contribute equitably to maintenance and repair,” said Bobby Stem, executive director of the Association of O k l a h o m a G e n e r a l C o n t r a c t o r s . “ I u n d e r s t a n d a n d appreciate why people might want to invest in t h e s e e c o - f r i e n d l y vehicles, however we must make sure that they pay their fair share for
u p k e e p o f t h e infrastructure.”“I’m disappointed with the Oklahoma Supreme Court striking down the r e g i s t r a t i o n f e e f o r e l e c t r i c a n d h y b r i d vehicles,” said Governor Mary Fallin. “Fortunately, lawmakers are in special session now working on how to adjust a shortfall of $215 million of state appropriations caused when the state Supreme Court earlier this year struck down a proposed smoking cessation fee.”

Hunting Safety Tips
When approached in a s e n s i b l e m a n n e r, t h e h u n t i n g s p o r t i s a n enjoyable and safe activity for people of most ages. However, carelessness and neglect are what often get hunters and others into trouble. These are a few hunting safety tips you should be using at all times.Firearm SafetyPretend every firearm is loaded. Even if you are sure that, without a shadow of a doubt, your firearm is u n l o a d e d , c o n v i n c e yourself that it is. Many firearm mishaps, injuries, and even deaths are the direct result from the gun owner simply believing t h a t t h e w e a p o n i s unloaded. Unsafe practices are never okay simply because you are under the impression a firearm is unloaded. When not using the gun, be sure to unload it.Never aim the firearm at anything you don’t intend to shoot. Simply enough,
avoid pointing your firearm a n y w h e r e o t h e r t h a n directions in which you will be shooting.Double-check the target and its surroundings. Don’t take shots on game that is either too far away to be seen clearly, or game that i s n ’ t f u l l y e x p o s e d . Additionally, know what is beyond your target before shooting.Clear the action and barrel o f o b s t r u c t i o n s . Mechanical errors and mishaps are the common result from obstructions in both the barrel and action areas. Look them over b e f o r e o p e r a t i n g t h e firearm.Wear hunter orange at all t i m e s . T h e c l a s s i c fluorescent orange worn by hunters has been known to save lives time and time again. Because deer do not possess red cone receptors in their eyes, they cannot d i f f e rent ia te be tween h u n t e r o r a n g e o r browns/greens.Keep your ammo separate from your firearms. When storing in the off-season or between trips, never store the two of these things together.Steer clear of drugs and alcohol before or during a hunting trip. It might seem obvious, but consuming mind-altering substances before a hunting trip can be ex t remely dangerous . A v o i d e v e n t a k i n g medications that pose m i n i m a l r i s k f o r drowsiness.Tree Stand SafetyEmploy the use of a safety b e l t w h e n c l i m b i n g .
Whether it’s your deer stand, a tree, or a fence, secure yourself with a safety belt to cut down on risk of injury. Never climb
or scale anything while holding a loaded firearmSplurge on a quality stand.
The extra money spent on a portable, sturdy stand will pay off in the long run.
Once you’re in your stand, immediately strap yourself in.

Score a win for the Sierra ClubAs the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled last Tuesday that t h e e l e c t r i c v e h i c l e r e g i s t r a t i o n f e e i s unconstitutional. The fee was passed in the last five days of the legislative session “The Sierra Club applauds the Oklahoma Supreme Court for striking down this biased and illegal tax on electric vehicles,” said
Johnson Bridgwater, director of the Sierra Club Oklahoma chapter. “There are clear signs that the car industry is poised to go electric quickly and, in Oklahoma, this switch is badly needed. To clean up our dirty air, cut climate emissions and assure Oklahoma is keeping up with the transition to a clean energy economy, we need to
accelerate the transition to clean, electric vehicles. With this arbitrary fee removed, Oklahomans can drive down t h e h i g h w a y t o c l e a n transportation, leaving dirty transportation in the dust.” The fee would have raked in nearly half a million dollars this budget year and about $1

million in 2018, according to a legislative analysis.Lawmakers added a $100 annual fee on owners of electric cars and $30 for hybrid vehicles. In the 6-3 ruling, the court determined the Legislature’s sole purpose on House Bill 1449 was to raise revenue. House Bill 1449 “clearly levies a tax in the strict sense of the word and the incurred revenue from it is not incidental to its purpose,” wrote Justice Joseph Watt.
“Our roads and bridges are taking a beating from these heavier vehicles, yet they do not contribute equitably to maintenance and repair,” said Bobby Stem, executive director of the Association of O k l a h o m a G e n e r a l Contractors. “I understand and appreciate why people might want to invest in these eco - f r i end ly veh ic l e s , however we must make sure that they pay their fair share f o r u p k e e p o f t h e i n f r a s t r u c t u r e . ” “ I ’ m
disappointed with the Oklahoma Supreme Court s t r i k i n g d o w n t h e registration fee for electric and hybrid vehicles,” said Governor Mary Fa l l in . “Fortunately, lawmakers are in special session now working on how to adjust a shortfall of $215 million of state appropriations caused when the state Supreme Court earlier this year struck down a proposed smoking cessation fee.”

Kids love Halloween! They get to dress up and get free candy! What a perfect holiday! Give your kids some precious Halloween memories that they'll have for the rest of their life. Some of your kids already know things that you can do to be safe, like how to cross the street, not to talk to or go with strangers and things like that. But we adults know how exciting Halloween can be and that can make you forget to be careful. Here's some tips from the McAlester Police Department that we have just for your kids, to help keep them safe on Halloween night! Some of t h e s e i d e a s a r e c a l l e d "common sense" ideas, which means that they are things that you should know and use in everyday life. •Plan costumes that are bright, reflective, and flame retardant. Make sure shoes fit
well and that the costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, or being tangled.•Reflective tape can be added to costumes or bags.•Instead of masks that block field of vision, think about non-toxic face paint.•Make sure beards and wigs don’t cover eyes, mouths, or nose.•If using a Sword, cane or stick make sure it is flexible, not sharp, and not too long, to prevent injury.•Carry flashlights with fresh batteries for children and escorts.•Make sure children know how to call 911, and know there phone number if lost or emergency. •Put a name tag on children’s costumes with phone number. Trick or treat safety•Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.•Older kids who are going alone, go over the route that will be taken and have a time that they should return home. Have them carry a cell phone if possible.•Go in a group and stay together.•Only go to homes with porch lights on. Walk on sidewalks if available, if not walk facing traffic.•Never enter a home or a car to receive a treat.•Never assume that cars will stop, and cross street at crosswalks or at intersections,
and never between parked cars. Don’t assume the right of way. Because one car stops, doesn’t mean others will.•Never cut across yards or alleys, stay in well lighted areas.•Don’t approach unfamiliar pets and animals•Respect other people and their property•Be polite and say Thank You.•Walk with your head up and b e a w a r e o f y o u r surroundings.Trick or Treat in McAlester will be on Tuesday October 31st from 6pm to 9pm. We will have extra Officers out patrolling the streets on Halloween. If you see a problem, don’t hesitate to flag down a policeman or call the police department.Have fun on Halloween but keep it safe!I am the Community Services Officer, Jeremy Busby. If you are in need of Child Safety Programs, Fraud Prevention programs, or would like us to set up an information booth at your community event, the programs are free and you can contact me at (918)423-9657 o r [email protected]. If you have any information regarding a crime, contact the McAlester Police Departments Criminal Investigations Division at (918)421-4917 or Email Capt. D o n H a s s a t [email protected] . Yo u m a y r e m a i n anonymous. To report any other cr iminal ac t iv i ty, contact the McAlester Police Department at (918)423-1212 or if it is an Emergency dial 911. Stay Safe and God Bless! Tip of the week: If you have porch steps, make sure they are well lit and easy to navigate for your trick or treat guests. Use jack-o-lanterns to light the stairs. Put a high intensity glow stick inside for light.

Soon a cold front will bring n e a r - f r e e z i n g t o s u b -f r e e z i n g n i g h t t i m e temperaturesIt was discovered in the early 1900s that under certain conditions sorghums are capable of releasing h y d r o c y a n i c a c i d o r commonly called prussic acid. Prussic acid when ingested by cattle, is quickly absorbed into the blood stream, and blocks the animal's cells from utilizing oxygen. Thus the animal dies from asphyxiation at the cellular level. Animals affected by prussic acid p o i s o n i n g e x h i b i t a characteristic bright red blood just prior to and during death. Lush young regrowth of sorghum-family p l a n t s a r e p r o n e t o accumulate prussic acid especially when the plants are stressed such as drought
or freeze damage. Light frosts, that stress the plant but do not kill it, are often associated with prussic acid poisonings. Producers should avoid grazing fields with sorghum type plants following a light frost. The risk of prussic acid poisoning will be reduced , i f g raz ing i s delayed until at least one week after a "killing freeze". As the plants die and the cell w a l l s r u p t u r e , t h e hydrocyanic acid is released as a gas, and the amount is greatly reduced in the plants. One can never be absolutely certain that a field of forage sorghum is 100% safe to graze.Cattle that must be grazed on forage sorghum pastures during this time of year should be fed another type of hay before turning in on the field, and should be watched closely for the first few hours after turn in. If signs of labored breathing, such as would be found in asphyxiation, are noted, cattle should be removed immediately. Call your l oca l ve t e r ina r i an f o r immediate help for those
animals that are affected. Be certain to read OSU Fact Sheet PSS-2904 “Prussic Acid Poisoning” before turning cattle to potentially dangerous fields.Frosts also stress the plant before a hard freeze kills it. Plant stress from frosts will i m p a i r t h e n o r m a l metabolism of the plant. T h e r e f o r e t h e p l a n t continues to take up nitrates f r o m t h e s o i l b u t i s inefficient at converting the n i t r a t e s t o p r o t e i n . T h e r e f o r e n i t r a t e accumulations may reach dangerous levels. Testing the forage before grazing or cutting for hay will provide important knowledge about the safety or danger in the forage. Visit with an OSU County Extension off ice about testing procedures and read OSU Fact Sheet PSS-2903 “ N i t r a t e To x i c i t y i n Livestock”.

An agriculture student said to a farmer: "Your methods are too old fashioned. I won't be surprised if this tree will give you less than twenty pounds of apples.""I won't be surprised either," said the farmer, "this is an orange tree".
Two cows were talking in the field one day. First Cow: "Have you heard about the Mad Cow disease that's going around?" Second Cow: "Yeah, makes you glad you're a penguin, doesn't it?”
T h e o l d f a r m e r w o n $1,000,000.00 in the lottery. The newspaper called and asked him what he was going to do with the money. The old farmer replied "I guess I'll just keep on farming until it's all gone."

I just want to say that with everything that is screwed up these days. Just stop and think about what is going on with all the hurricanes and bad things going on that last thing we need the shootings and bad th ings. A l i t t le kindness goes a long way. Have a blessed day.
Tweet from Donald Trump: Officials behind the now discredited "Dossier" plead the Fifth. Justice Department a n d / o r F B I s h o u l d immediately release who paid for it.
Listen fly brain, one of these days you will not be able to bond out and continue to steal for your drugs any longer. Why are all these people arrested if they are just going to be released over and over? This is ridiculous.
Less than a month ago, one man shot nearly 600 people in Las Vegas? We should still be a n g r y . W e s h o u l d b e screaming at the top of our lungs. We want answers as to what really happened!
I cannot believe how many people actually believe that the Las Vegas shooter acted alone. Get real! This story stinks big time.
Is it just me or is something truly wrong with some of the Oklahoma water sources? We seem to have a large portion (more than most states) of cancer patients. It just seems suspect to me this is why we only use bottled water, but it just scares me that there is something in the water causing a lot of this.
I do not know what is going on but I know the opioid crack down is going on, but what about those that truly suffer? All the abusers have made it very difficult for people who really are in pain. I live with chronic pain and without notice, my physician yanked me off my pain medications so now I am in unbearable pain and going through withdraws. This just isn't right!
Laughing hysterically at the new ladies panties that produce the ever so hideous camel toe. Who comes up with these pathetic products and furthermore who is pathetic enough to buy them is beyond me!
Another child has been
brutally attacked by a dog chained to a pole. For one, why was a baby outside at the age of one left unattended and secondly why was the poor animal changed? The perfect storm I say.
I have been reading the jail reports each week and I am a bit alarmed by the substance abuse that is obviously bad here. Why are they allowed to continue to just bond out? Why are they not detained for long periods in order to dry them out? I hear that the jail is at less than half capacity, so why not utilize the facility?
Why do some people feel the need to live their life with non stop drama and always h a v i n g s e l f i n d u c e d problems? These people will never get it. A good life starts and ends w i th pos i t i ve thoughts and behavior. Going through life with a problem on your shoulder is no way to live.
Hey pajama girl, you are in a public place! Show some self respect for God sakes. Pj’s are for the bedroom, not a fashion statement at the local grocery store. Smh
As the ho l i day season a p p r o a c h e s p l e a s e remember all the people that come together to donate their time and love to serving dinners to hundreds. If you can give of your time or are able to donate funds for the community dinners, please call the city and find out where to do so. It helps hundreds that without help would not have a holiday dinner at all. Thank you if you can help.
I j u s t w a t c h e d a v e r y disturbing video where a young lady was holding her six month old baby and was a t t a c k e d a n d s l a p p e d repeatedly by two other girls. One was named Sabra. Why?
All the media hype about the Russian involvement, so why is it that nothing has been done about this. Let's see because it was all smoke and mirrors! When will the people ever learn?
I would be lying if I didn't say that I was not a bit frightened by all the Antifa activity going on right now. What I cannot understand is why those individuals have chosen a destructive route to make a point? What happened to "peaceful resolutions"? We are in a very dangerous time right now with so many lost souls that have no real direction except for with violence.
There is correlation between the stock market (S&P500) and the economy (GDP). The correlation is by no means perfect but to say that the s t o c k m a r k e t a n d t h e economy are “two different things entirely” is to not understand their relationship to each other. The stock market presents “what is hoped to be” while the GDP
presents “what has been.” Based on a confident hope in Trump’s economic reforms, the stock market has gained over $5.2 trillion valuation since his elect ion. This valuation doesn’t just go into a Scrooge McDuck room full of gold coins. It translates into jobs required to service increases sales.
Respect the flag and the national anthem, honor those who gave their all and boycott the NFL.
Business owners: If you have an upcoming event and it’s posted all over the internet, take some time to read those posts and make sure they are correct. Do the times match up? Are the locations and d e t a i l s c o r r e c t ? D o e s a n y t h i n g c o n fl i c t o r i s anything left out? Have someone else read it too. It’s ve ry aggrava t ing fo r a customer to go to an event and find out the details on the internet were wrong.
Yesterday afternoon about 5:30 p.m., I passed two ladies
in a new car. They were driving about 15 miles per hour in the left lane. Really caused a jam as cars tried to get around them. When I was finally able to get around them, they laughed. What idiots!
All the information is out there if you would just educate yourzelves. Antifa is real, the extent of what is planned by t h i s o r g a n i z a t i o n o n November 4th is unclear, but I for one will not be taking any chances. Be familier with your surroundings and be careful you are going to be in a large
well promoted venue. When we do not know someone’s intention it is always safer to be cognizant and be ever so careful.
I am so not sold on the Las Vegas story that is being force fed to the public. A am a gun specialist and have been for over 35 years. I can tell you there were three different and distint gun sounds coming from different areas. This was not a lone gunman period. All it takes it reaseaching sound a n d u n d e r s t a n d i n g projectory. Soemthing stinks big time.
